We recently saw versions of this hugely popular mobile and flash game 2048 hit the Atari 2600, Commodore 16 & Plus/4, Sega Mega Drive, Nintendo Game Boy, Atari XL/XE and Sega Master System among other systems so it was only a matter of time before the Nintendo Game Boy got a version too. If you're not familiar with the game, here are some details (from Wikipedia):  2048 is a single-player online and mobile game created in March 2014 by Italian 19-year-old Gabriele Cirulli, in which the objective is to slide tiles on a grid to combine them and create a tile with the number 2048. It can be regarded as a type of sliding block puzzle.

Homebrewer programmer Sanqui has not only released his own version for the portable Nintendo machine but he has also made available all the assets he used to make it, to help you build your own versions of the game. You can check out all this information and more about his projects on his website. A ROM of this game has been released for free and can be used with both real hardware and flash cartridges, so now you can finally play this addictive game on the move!

Underwater Predator is a new homebrew game for the Atari 2600 by Atari Age member ThatDude (A.K.A. Declan Hoare), this is his first ever game for the system. You are a shark swimming around underwater doing what a shark does, eat other fish! You have to eat the goldfish while avoiding black fish, which are rotten but somehow still alive and swimming (SHHH, don't question these things). Every 20 points, the speed of the fish increases, and although the first speed is downright boring, it quickly gets more interesting. You use the stick to move and the button to eat.

The game was created using Batari BASIC and you can download the source code for this title HERE!. Underwater Predator works perfectly with real hardware, via a flash cartridge, or with the Stella emulator. If you want to read more about the development of this game then you can do so over in the thread on Atari Age forum.

Homebrew Chat / AXE - New Atari 2600 Game

AXE is a new hack 'n' slash game for Atari VCS by Atari Age member la1n. The object of the game is to kill all the others warriors and don't get stabbed back! You can only kill a enemy if he is not already stabbing you, so precise timing is absolutely crucial to progress. The whole game was written entirely in assembler, a great achievement in these days of Batari BASIC.

This game will run perfectly on Stella or a flash cartridge and the source code for the game is included in the download, but don't look at it or you will be slashed to hell! If you would like to read more about the development of this game and find out what inspired it you can read the development thread over on Atari Age.

Sliding Blaster is a brand new homebrew game by NES Dev member NovaSquirrel. A demo version was entered in the recent NES Dev coding contest but now the game has been worked on further, finished and given a proper release. Nova had asked for tips on fixing the control without a mouse, then worked on this further to get it right, taking inspiration from Konami's classic arcade game Gyruss!

Sliding Puzzle has been released to download for free and with work with both emulators and real hardware via a flash cartridge. If you would like to read more about the games development then check out this thread on the subject. You can also download previous builds of the game too if you want to compare them.

This game is a port of the TI99 game of the same name. It's a fast paced arcade game heavily inspired by Pac-Man and released in 1983 by Sierra On-Line for the Apple II, Atari 8-bits and Texas Instruments TI99/4A. The MSX version includes some enhancements but remains true to the spirit of the original game, meaning it is fun but slightly primitive. This is no bad thing of course!

Spectrum Chat / Sinclair ZX Interface 2
July 13, 2014, 16:04:53 PM
The ZX Interface 2 was a peripheral from Sinclair Research for its ZX Spectrum home computer released in September 1983. It had two joystick ports and a ROM cartridge slot, which offered instant loading times. The joystick ports were not compatible with the popular Kempston interface, and thus did not work with most Spectrum games released prior to the launch of the ZX Interface 2. In addition, the pass-through expansion bus provided was stripped, only allowing a ZX Printer to be attached.

Homebrew Chat / 2048 - New Super Nintendo Homebrew
July 08, 2014, 18:48:31 PM

We recently saw versions of this hugely popular mobile and flash game 2048 hit the Atari 2600, Commodore 16 & Plus/4, Sega Mega Drive, Nintendo Game Boy, Atari XL/XE and Sega Master System among other systems so it was only a matter of time before the Super Nintendo got a version too.

The Super Nintendo version of 2048 has been made by prolific Nintendo homebrewer Alek Maul using his special PVSneslib, an SDK coded in C especially for developing Super Nintendo games. The library ships with examples and a compiler, it is based on snes-sdk. It features some heavily improved graphics and sound compared to the original flash version. It can be downloaded for free from his website to use with real hardware, via a flash cartridge, or with an emulator. You can check out Alek's website HERE!

Perhaps this isn't a very original game, but since the original Freeway game by David "Pitfall!" Crane for the Atari 2600 was never released for the MSX or Master System Paulo Silva (a.k.a. Nitrofurano) decided to give it a try (with some small differences). This game is the result of that hard work and was developed on Boriel's ZX-Basic Compiler. The sources of the game will also be released, palette will be "enhanced" for MSX2, and it will probably will be released for Colecovision and SG-1000 as soon as he can figure out how to do that from Boriel's ZX-Basic Compiler!

The original Freeway was one of the first titles released by Activision in their effort to publish independent games for the Atari 2600. One or two players control chickens who can be made to run across a ten lane highway filled with traffic in an effort to "get to the other side." Every time a chicken gets across a point is earned for that player. If hit by a car, a chicken is forced back either slightly, or pushed back to the bottom of the screen, depending on what difficulty the switch is set to. The winner of a two player game is the player who has scored the most points in the two minutes, sixteen seconds allotted.

Both the MSX and SMS versions have been released to download for free and so will the other versions that follow. There is a development topic for the Master System version over at SMS Power forum while the thread for the MSX version can be found over at Karoshi forum. We will bring more information on the ColecoVision and Sega SG-1000 versions when we have it. For now you can download it and give it a try!

Over the years many Sega fans have dreamed of a version of Super Smash Brothers for their own machines, one featuring iconic Sega characters like Opa-Opa, Sonic, Wonder Boy, Alex Kidd and Joe Musashi. Well now your dreams have come true thanks to the homebrew coding skills of Bonaf, a member of the Sega 8-bit Forum. He chose to use the power of the Mega Drive to make the game thanks to its easy to use BASIC compiler BasiEgaXorz, but it features characters from all the best Master System games.

At the moment the game only has a few characters but it is still being worked on and the programmer plans to add many more into the mix as well as a story mode and single player missions. A demo of the game has been made available to to use with real hardware (via a flash cartridge) or your favourite emulator. We really look forward to hearing more about this game as progress commences, in the mean time you can read more about its development over in the thread at Sega 8-bit. You can also watch a short video of it in action below!
