Retro News & Chat / Atari : A Visual History Book
November 12, 2018, 11:15:24 AM
Hello everybody,

I had decided that I had given the Atari community some great products to enjoy over the last few years and decided I wouldn't produce anymore Atari content in the near future, but recently had seen some products that completely fitted the bill for me in a direction I wanted to go in, now for quite some time and have now returned and began work on a new book publication I am very passionate about. This had to be done because of the complete lack of Atari 8-bit computer coverage out there and its incredible software library, so with that, I present to you all a new Atari publication in the works.

The Sales Pitch

The book will be to cover a huge majority of classic third-party Atari 8-bit software titles from such amazing software houses like Datasoft, Broderbund, First Star Software, English Software and many more plus a selection of commercial homebrew games giving these games the exposure in a visual compendium manner

The Book will also deliver a selection of Interviews with Game designers who worked on the Atari 8-bit computers and other unannounced additions to the book that you will see when it is released. I will also be profiling three Atari 8-bit machines for inclusion inside the book, these will be the Atari 800 - Atari 800XL and the Atari 130XE home computers with additional photography of these computers throughout the book as well and a choice selection of Atari related Peripherals.

I aim to be taking the product to a crowdfunding platform in order to help this publication to become a physical book for all Atari 8-bit fans and vintage computer enthusiasts that share an interest in the Atari 8-bit Home computer and its software. I also promise to deliver some fantastic Atari Visual History only perks too, so there will be lots to choose from.

The Book Previews

When creating something like this, I am all about the visuals of a product and want to give the best experience to the reader when glazing upon these wonderful pieces of art, code and gameplay merging into one exciting showcase, with that each game covered in the book with include on the left a remastered image of the Box or cassette inlay artwork with a 200-215 words write-up about the game and a single screenshot of the game in action.

I have chosen not to include any Offical Atari-branded games in the book due to an actioning against the publication with a possible Cease and Desist violation order from Atari Inc. that could prevent the book being released and will be produced under a fair usage and investigative journalistic manner allowing this to be successful as an Unofficial Visual History of the Atari 8-bit book. This was something I decided I would do after what Atari had placed against Marc Oberhäuser and his Atari related publication. So please enjoy the previews of the some of the games that will be included in the book.

How can YOU help?

I decided who better to make this truly happen then the Atari community itself? I am looking for contributors to the book, whether it be a contributing game review of 215 words for games that will be included in the finished book and have your name credited and mentioned in the contributors section of the book, I wanted to open end this project to my fellow Atarians to help produce the best Atari 8-bit publication ever created.

I wish to personally thank you all for your time here, and hopefully, we can make history with this book, I truly wish to go all out in a blaze of glory with this publication and with your help? we can. So please get in touch with me via PM here @ Retro Video Gamer,  if you want to help with this project and all who participate will be included within the book on the main contributor index.

Hi everybody,

with working like a horse on the book, I also take the time out to keep an eye on a great many things Atari and have come across a new unofficial product produced by a guy based in Wales in England. there website cover, not just this,m but pretty much anything you could want or if it's not there they can make it for you. I have mentioned their website in the starting thread of my Atari visual history book project and reached out to them in help get awareness for this new and exciting looking 2019 calendar.

The Calendar is printed paper stock weight is 170 GSM with a carded back and silk finish, promoting the best quality with a gloss front cover, at present there is a limited supply of 50 to which I believe with about 22 or so left, they may get more done if they warrant enough orders for the Calendar. So how much and where? see below

and you can order yours from http://www.rhayadercomputers.co.uk don't delay, I'd hate for you all to miss out on this.

Kind regards

Darren.

From Facebook from Ben's Wife

"Dear friends,
This is Sarah, Ben's wife. For those of you who don't already know, I am deeply sorry to pass on the news that Ben died very suddenly on Monday morning. We know that it will come as a shock to you as it has to us. we are all at home feeling loved and supported, and our thoughts are with all of you who knew, loved, got irritated by and were lucky enough to have a little bit of his magic in your lives. I'll post details of what's happening as soon as we have sorted everything out.

If you would like to share any photos or thoughts with us, please send them to bendaglishphotos@gmail.com - we would love to hear from you.

Sarah, Jake, Rhianna and Lottie xxx"

So I wanted to pay homage to the incredible talent that was Ben Daglish myself here, this man's music was some of the most creative, original and system limit pushing pieces. I especially valued the style and execution of his works on the Atari ST machine from which most of his work from the Gremln Graphics stable, games like 3D Galax, F.O.F.T, Northstar and the brilliant Super Cars series of games, this music for the best part made the gaming experience more involving and shine.

So this will be forever etched in my mind of truly outstanding his music was, upon hearing the news, I'm numb with shock and can only fadum how his family is dealing with the loss at the moment. R.I.P Ben, your music was enlightening as was your presence insure with the people lucky to have had the privilege of meeting you.

R.I.P Ben.

Hello everybody,

Many of you may know me and many of you may not, I was the creator of a couple of Atari digital publications a few years back. The Atari Gamer Magazine and the Atari ST Gamer Series found over @ https://www.greyfoxbooks.com and the AtariCrypt Atari ST Magazine

I had decided that I had given the Atari community some great product to enjoy and decided I wouldn't produce anymore Atari content in the near future, but recently had seen some products that completely fit the bill in a direction I wanted to go in for quite some time and have returned and began work on a new book publication I am very passionate about and just knew this had to be done due to the complete lack of the Atari 8-bit computer range and its incredible software, so with that I present to you all a new Atari publication in the works.

The Sales Pitch

The books premise will be to cover a huge majority of classic third-party Atari 8-bit software from such amazing software houses, like Datasoft, Broderbund, First Star Software, English Software and a selection of commercial homebrew games plus many more for the first time giving these games the exposure in a visual compendium never seen in a format of this type before. The Book will also deliver a selection of Interviews with Game designers who worked on the Atari 8-bit computers and other unannounced additions to the book that you will see when released. I will also be profiling three Atari 8-bit machines the Atari 800 - Atari 800XL and the Atari 130XE home computers with additional photography of these computers throughout the book as well as a choice selection of Atari related Peripherals. With the completed publication completed, I will be taking the product to a crowdfunding platform in order to allow this publication to become a physical book for all Atari 8-bit fans and vintage computer enthusiasts that share an interest in the Atari 8-bit Home computer. Also to help the project meet its goal I will be working very closely with http://www.rhayadercomputers.co.uk in order to create some very unique and fantastic perks to add to the book that will not be available anywhere else so there is a lot of stuff in the works for this project.

The Book Previews

When creating something like this I am all about the visuals of a product and want to give the best experience in seeing these wonderful pieces of art and code and gameplay become one, so with that each game covered in the book with include on the left a remastered image of the Box or cassette inlay artwork with a 200 word write about the game and a single screenshot of the games in action, I have chosen not include any Offical Atari-branded games in the book due to facing a possible Cease and Desist violation order against the book that could prevent the book being released and will be going through under fair usage and investigative journalism allowing this to be successful as an Unofficial Visual History of the Atari 8-bit. With this project been a very serious undertaking, I decided who better to make this truly happen then the Atari community itself? I am looking for contributors to the book, whether it be a contributing game review of 200 words for games that will be included in the finished book and have your name credited and mentioned in the contributors section of the book, as well as an seasoned photographers with Atari hardware that would be willing to contribute photography of physical Atari hardware to be included throughout the book with full accreditation given for all imagery used. I wanted to open end this project to my fellow Atarians to help produce the best Atari 8-bit publication ever created, I'm also on the look-out for exclusive interviewees willing to share their thoughts and experiences creating for the Atari 8-bit platform, I have a few leads at the present, but the more the merrier for inclusion in the book.

I wish to personally thank you all for your time here, and hopefully we can make history with this book, I truly wish to go all out in a blaze of glory with it and with your help we can, so please get in touch with me via PM here @ Retro Video Gamer or support@atarigamer.co.uk if you can help with this project, all will be included within the book as the main contributor.

Starcade Remastered episodes for download now until Monday!

Get all 4 seasons here:
http://acid-house.com/starcade/starcade.html

With permission from the admin, I am offering up all four remastered seasons of Starcade by ShoutFactoryTV. I had offered this up on KLOV a while ago and it was very popular. I need these off my server now, it's a lot of space! So you have until Monday to grab them!

Total size is 16,549,870,708 bytes zipped split into 4 zip files.

----

From the original post on KLOV:

ShoutFactoryTV recent got ahold of the original tapes and remastered them and did a live-stream marathon on Twitch TV. They made the shows available to stream here:
http://www.shoutfactorytv.com/series/starcade

Using this plugin for Chrome, you can easily download the episodes:
https://chrome.google.com/…/imkngaibigegepnlckfcbe…/reviews…

They've downloaded all of these and named them according to the usual SxxExx format commonly used in TV formats, and included the player names and games played that were in the descriptions, fixing some game names were typed incorrect such as QUIX, and one player's name was misspelt SCOTTL instead of SCOTT.

he can provide a full-text listing of the filenames if desired for reference if anyone wishes to grab them from ShoutFactory after I remove them from my server.

ShoutFactoryTV made a mistake with two episodes showing up in Season 1 marked with Episode 22. Season 2 is missing episode 22. The correct order is:

Chris & Mike = Season 1
Bill & Owen = Season 2

This is a must-have for your odd nights of nothing to do, whack on an episode or 10

Retro News & Chat / RIP Bob Wakelin
January 21, 2018, 09:12:43 AM
Woke up this morning to read that traditional video game cover artist as well Comic and illustrator work passed away yesterday. Bob had been in poor health for a short while but seemed to be on the path to recovery which make writing this all the more saddening. It is unknown what Bob passed from, but the world has lost an incredible light, from his incredible work with likes of Ocean Software(his home for many years) to his amazing sense of humour and comedy and wit.

R.I.P Bob Wakelin. May you paint with the cosmos and find enternal peace.

Hello everybody,

Firstly I couldn't let this pass on the opportunity to share with you all a very special collection of Selective and fantastic collection of Atari  related merchandise and one in which I have had an honour and collaboration in helping to design an exclusive set of vintage atari mouse mats I guarantee you simply will not find anywhere else other than from Rhayader Computers. All previews were rendered by Rhayader Computers and composited into the previews below by Darren Doyle a.k.a. (Greyfoxâ,,¢).

So it's with great pleasure I present to you all here the.......

-==PLEASE CLICK ON IMAGES TO ENLARGE THEM==-

First up in the Atari 8-bit range Collection One

These Mouse mats are printed on the highest quality of Mouse mat Fabric-covered rubber backed 5mm thick 250x190 print is 300dpi dye sub and not on a plastic laminate mouse mat to you find on the likes of eBay, James Grayson founder and owner of Rhayader Computers has vast knowledge & experience over many years in perfecting very high-quality products of this nature and guarantees 100% quality on all his mouse mats and even has a personal customisation service if there is something you haven't seen on their website it can be made for you. This collection of Mouse mats were exclusively created by James and myself for the Atari Community as we felt that Atari vintage branding deserved to be showcased in the manner from my painstakingly Atari 400 keyboard layout mat design as created from scratch and exclusively only available at Rhayader Computers and nowhere else on the internet these can only be got from us.

The Atari 8-bit range Collection Two

Again as you can see from these reviews to which does not do the Mouse mats justice in real life, James has perfected his art in both creating these designs and bringing them into reality for those who love the Atari Brand and what it stood for back in the 1970's to the 1980's & 90's. As you can see we both have recreated the likes of the box art of the Atari 130xe and an informative Atari 800xl spec mouse mat to liven up your desktop, So do yourself a favour and get on board today!.

The Atari 16-bit range Collection One

As you would expect a natural progression to the wonderful Atari 16 bit era, covering the Atari ST range of machines for those that owned one from my design of the actual Atari 1040ST box art the computer came in including strips and all :). to the Atari Ste computer and beyond, these are very nice to look at and even better to have in physical form, we spend a lot of time planning these mouse mat designs out and making them a reality for all Atari fans to own and enjoy only at Rhayader Computers.

The Atari 16-bit and Fuji range Collection Two

If it is a case to where you simply love the original and wonderful iconic Atari Fuji logo we have you covered with more designs presently in production and will be added to the website as they are created. but wait this is not all we have to offer, did I mention that Rhayader Computers also do many different formats other than Atari? or that we also produce video game related mouse mats across a range of computer platforms and consoles? well, we all love our vintage games, don't we? well, what about something like this our very own exclusive mouse mat?

Now that you have seen a very small selection of this wonderful reto gaming related mouse mats..comes the dreaded part of how much do these cost? does this include free shipping? do you ship around the world etc?, Are these guys reliable and trustworthy?. Well to make it easy all round the below graphic should answer all your question in this regard.

Now the trustworthy part...I myself have gained the respect of the Atari community after producing many Atari related stuff like the Atari Gamer magazine series which can be seen over at http://www.atarigamer.co.uk and have a great following on many Atari related and retro gaming related facebook pages and groups, as well as being apart of the team here at http://www.retrovideogamer.co.uk which I help support many great products and projects from all walks of the retro gaming community and with this being no exception in helping create awareness to Atari fans and retro gaming fans in general about Rhayader Computers and their great products and also the ones they have planned later in the year which are simply going to blow people away..believe me..I've seen some of it and it is simply awesome. James service is fast, effective and professional in delivering high-quality merchandise to YOU the fans, so I hope you show some interest in these.

Disclaimer : As these mouse mats are being sold with Atari branding in mind from a vintage period, it is important that James Grayson, Rhayader Computers acknowledge the copyright ownership of Atari Inc.whom hold the right to the Atari fuji logoâ,,¢ and generalisation of the Atariâ,,¢ brand, therefore, the mouse mats are sold under the pretence of "mouse mat blanks" to which you the customer are purchasing, the imagery contained on the mouse mat is given freely and not a chargeable item.

With these mouse mats being handcraft and printed we urge people interested in purchasing a favorite mouse mat of their choice not simply claim they will order one and not follow through, these items have now become high demand items on an order basis and we please ask that no TIME WASTERS initially commit and then don't follow through with their order..thank you all for your understanding. Please Visit Rhayader Computers to get started over at.

I'd seen an image a friend of mine posted on face on the classic Outrun "Ferrari" around a quiet country road directly below and thought, that's a great take on a classic arcade game and incorporating it within a real life scenario and it seem to be a bit of an addiction now creating them, so I have a few more I'm looking at doing, it's all for a bit of Arcade Art imitating life.

[/align:2dyle852]

so I decided I'd do one on the classic from Sega the great "After Burner" which was first posted in my Coin Op Arcade Guide post, but I decided to give them their own thread, so I hope you all enjoy them and if you have any realistic suggestions on making some new ones, post them here.

After Burner (c) Sega 1987[/align:2dyle852]
[/align:2dyle852]

and the newly created today, a great game that I played to dead in the arcades

Chase H.Q. Taito (c) 1988[/align:2dyle852]
[/align:2dyle852]

Thunder Blade Sega (c) 1987[/align:2dyle852]
[/align:2dyle852]

[center:2dyle852]A Platform Crossover[/center:2dyle852]
[center:2dyle852][/center:2dyle852]

more to follow :)

for many the sequel to a Star Raiders was a mixed bag, as its sequel was originally another game altogether based on a classic cult movie "The Last Starfighter" but when the film failed to ignite the box office Atari decided to drop the title of The Last Star Fighter which is a exceptional Atari game in its own right, released this as Star Raiders II, but a designer from the Coin Op division was and had actually produce a direct sequel to the original game, why it never seen the light of day is anyone guess...until now.

https://archive.org/details/StarRaidersII_Wilmunder

The true sequel to star raiders has finally be released and is freely available to download from the internet archive from the link above, this is a massive release after 31 years in hiding, so if you. Have a SIO2USB you can play this on real hardware, or any popular Atari 8 bit emulator.

Although I really don't know a lot about the Atari Jaguar as it wasn't my area of play when it came out, I certainly have played the great shoot em up of Xenon 2 - Megablast on the Amiga in the year of 1989. A game that was developed by The Bitmap Brothers and also released on the Atari ST, IBM PC, Sega Master System, Sega Mega Drive, Acorn Archimedes, Game Boy and Sharp X68000. But the news of today is that same game is being ported over to the Jaguar by 'Reboot' with permission from the Bitmap Brothers!
[center:rr9bee39][/center:rr9bee39]
With a heads up by RetrOtaku and according to Reboot, this vertically scrolling shoot 'em up in which was pretty unusual for its time, as the player's spaceship can reverse the scrolling of the play area for a limited distance. Will hopefully be every bit as good as the original game with lots of enemy waves, deadly landscapes and powerful power ups. There is a down side to all of this though, due to licensing reasons it wont have the original music as it will be created by 505. So lets just hope that 505 can pull of a damn fine tune, as it it was the quality of the music and graphics that led to the game's memorability.

I thought this would be a fun topic amongst us old Skool gaming farts (well some of us) to get off their chest what their other half thought and made of all this retro gaming, collecting and general retro gaming hobby we all love and enjoy?

For me, I know she tolerates it and the retro related work I do, but I believe that's out of respect as she has no grasp of what I'm talking about half the time :36:

Hello everybody,

With all the amount of Kickstarter projects happening recently, I thought wouldn't it be a good idea to attempt to try and have some of the best Kickstarter Project here under one roof, Now I'm aware we have a kickstarter post , but the problems with that is that Kickstarter projects can get lost and forgotten or more importantly over looked.

so I present to you....

The Aim is to showcase those of the best and most relevant to you and the subject matter here at RVG, but it doesn't soley rely on Retro related games, books, but that of Films and anything that is worthy of being showcased in the Kickstarter Legion page. There fore we would encourage those that are planning in doing a Kickstarter project to get in touch with either myself or Zapiy about showcasing your project there.

Requirements are simply, for those willing to submit their showcase to the Kickstarter Legion page as that we ask is to be included as an endorser of your project, helping you get your project promoted and more awareness for your Kickstarter so we both win <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smiley.gif" alt=":)" title="Smiley" />

At present we are head hunting those exceptional Kickstarters to include on our Kickstarter Legion page for your awareness and will add more shortly. So if you wish to check out the Page, it can be found on the Home Portal page on the left, under the roll out of "Kickstarter Legion" or if not it should be visible to you all on the portal or you can be a lazy sod and click here

Thanks for listening

Greyfox.
