David Braben, one of the creators of the original, is seeking £1.25m ($2m) via Kickstarter to fund the updated version.
Called Elite: Dangerous it will involve the same mix of interstellar travel, trading, piracy and spaceships as the original 8-bit game.
Those who pledge cash to the project will also get a chance to shape the development of the updated version.
"Elite is a game that I've wanted to come back to for a very, very long time," Mr Braben told the BBC. "It's the sort of game that I would very much like to play today."
Awesome!!
I think it's time to upgrade my PC, with the one I'm writting on I can't even run Street Fighter IV... I would prefer to see it released on a console to be honest.
I'm now playing Oolite, a free remake of Elite upgradable with several expansion packs with ships, missions, textures, sounds, etc.. also free. Awesome game and highly recommended for everybody who likes space sims. There are even novels about the Oolite Universe!
Don't be surprised, my broken English is legendary!
To me it translates as:
Elite (4) is a game i've been promising to make for years now, just go back and read old PC magazines, or Arcade where it was due to come out around the PS2 era, i even claimed i was just doing things like Dogs Life, in order to fund it, now i want your cash.
Sorry David, but you've had years to explain what you wanted from a new Elite, what was holding you back etc and now Kickstarter is all the rage, out you pop...
Best of luck to you, sure you'll get the funding, hope it delivers on what the (paying) fans want, but just how much of the input they give will be used to shape the game?.
Are you honestly saying IF enough people want a feature or a concept included that your not keen on and has an effect on how you see game being, you'll include it anyway?...i have my doubts.
