I watched the PS4 announcement last night and was happy to see them showing more original IPs than sequels. The Witness, Driveclub, Deep Down, Knack, 'Creative Console', Destiny, etc. were more interesting to me than showing another Killzone, and another inFamous.
Thing is though, Destiny is much like Diablo 3, there's also a (enhanced) version of it coming out for PS4, it's not original I.P designed for PS4 or Xbox Next in mind.I personally had hoped a new generation would have a far higher ratio in favour of new I.P's to existing ones.
Deep Down (working title) just looked influenced by likes of Dragon's Dogma, Monster Hunter, Demon's+Dark Souls etc.Indeed many see it as Dragon's Dogma 2 in all but name.
Regardless of the lead platform for Destiny, at least it's a new next gen IP from a major developer... much more interesting to me than a delayed port of the latest Diablo sequel.
And, even if Deep Down started as a Dragon's Dogma project, it's gone in enough of a new direction that Capcom has given it a new (working) title. A few of Capcom's major games/series were created by re-directing projects during Resident Evil development so I'm not writing it off this early.
Current gen PSN titles (and save data) won't be able to be transfered to PS4 Sony has said.
Sooo, i'm wondering just how long they'll remain on PSN once PS4 has gotten into full swing.
Raises a few questions of what happens to games you've bought if your HDD fails (i've had 3 die on me in past 3 years due to bad sectors etc).
I'll be shocked if Sony is able to offer any kind of streaming backwards compatibility... PSN or retail. I know my DSL won't be streaming PS3 games at 1080p. The Gaikai tech seems much better suited to using a Vita as a portable display streaming PS4 games from your own console anyway. (ie Wii U gamepad with infinite range)
So, with no chance of backwards compatibility using my DSL, preserving PS3/PSN purchases becomes a bigger issue. It's not just PSN downloads that could disappear but patches for retail games would vanish also.
I'll probably end up buying a spare PS3 near end of life, cloning my current system, and storing it as a backup. The alternative is to softmod and use pirated downloads... strange that the pirate community could end up the only long-term solution to access your old PSN purchases.
IF this were Capcom of old, i'd be damn giddy to see what they brought to the Next-Gen table, a Capcom who were'nt afraid to scrap versions of Resident Evil (early Res.2 and then various versions of Res 4) until they were happy they were delivering the vision they wanted and who good see a games stand alone potential.
The Capcom i know now? DLC on disc, piss-poor A.I characters (Res.Evil 5), frustrating, copycat gaming (Res 6), give key franchise to cheapest developer (Racoon City), so called 'HD' re-releases etc, i'm standing back from.
Bungie? lot to prove with 1st new project after handing over Halo, never been a fan of Marathon, never tried Oni, so my only exp.with Bungie has been Halo, loved 1st game and Reach, Halo 3 was'nt bad, SP on 2 was awful, ODST, well you can blame MS for taking an exp.pack and turning it into a full price game.I am eager to see what they deliver, hopefully they've stopped buying into the myth they are really good story tellers (honestly gys, you ain't) and deliver something special.
Time will tell.
Well, John Carmack seems happy with PS4 hardware: 'I can say Sony made wise engineering choices'.
But Sony seem keen to wriggle out of answering a few key questions on this gen+the next.
Still no sign of PS3 'Agent' (Rockstars PS3 exclusive) nor 'The Last Guardian' and Sony so far refusing to say IF PS4 will be region free. This was 1 area they got very right for PS3, if they lock PS4.....
Mind you, i am sooo pleased to see 3D TV gaming has been seen as the flash in the pan it really was, Sony saying 'It's NOT a focus'.
As for MS showing off Xbox Next, word is event in April, so Sony have 2 months to build on the showcasing and answer some damn questions.

As much as I loathe Capcom's business practices this gen (on-disc DLC, DRM locking of Bionic Commando 2/Final Fight:Double Impact, Super Ultimate Arcade Editions, etc) they're still one of my favorite publishers. More creativity and variety than most of the other biggies and some of my favorite current gen games. Resident Evil has lost its way though... series of disappointments since RE4 except for the Wii's Chronicles games. I'm actually hopeful about the console version of RE:Revelations at least. I'm just glad Capcom didn't showcase RE6:Gold during the PS4 announcement.
As far as Microsoft's event in April, it might be hard to distinguish from what Sony just showed. Hardware specs will be similar, and they'll probably be showing plenty of multi-platform games. Aside from Killzone/InFamous sequels and Driveclub Sony didn't have much to show for exclusives. Beyond and Creative Console were only tech demos with no gameplay. So... what will Microsoft show? If Fable 4 and Gears 4 both remain 360 releases they may not have many exclusives to offer either. Halo 5? Forza 5? ugh. Biggest 'news' at both announcements might be their new controller designs?
Dead Space started this gen as a Res.Evil beater for myself, now look at it, so guess i should'nt be overly harsh on Capcom, even though they often are full of the brown stuff (how's that PSP Res.Evil coming Capcom? Not so good? what about PSP DMC? ohh, i see....).
MS+Exclusives going to be an odd one, whilst i'm sure they'll continue with the timed DLC exclusives, espically COD Map Packs, since Rare been switched to Kinect only stuff (and MS deciding with them having Halo, they did'nt need another FPS exclusive, so Perfect Dark was taken out and shot), guess there won't be more Perfect Dark, Kameco, Banjo, etc as we know it.
With Fable? by Fable 3, even the most di hard reviewers had gotten fed up with gulf between what was promised and what was delivered, EDGE+Gamestm awarding it 7/10 (and then there was Fable:the Journey on Kinect).
Freelancer sequel on 360 canned, Halo Wars studio closed after release, so strike those out as possibilities.
Quantum Redshift developers had signed up for a 2-game deal with MS back in the Xbox days, MS pulled out, so cannot see that being rebooted way Wipeout has.
Bound to be new Forza, Halo+Gears, as MS can then say, Hey we've not forgotten the hardcore gamer.
Quick point on Sony not showing the console (PS4):
In fairness, all they said was they were holding a conference to talk about the future of Playstation, which they did, it was'nt, we're going to be showing you the PS4 in detail.
🙁 Damn, there goes my hopes for Gran Turismo being put out to pasture, G.T 6 just been mentioned, for PS3, NOT PS4.
Also, whilst i'm 'ere:
Been reading on RG all these concerns about PS4 etc being a PC in a box:Well, hello? just what exactly was the Dreamcast using except a PC Video Card (Power V.R) and it was always going to be using either the Power VR or a 3DFX card, plus it had Windows CE O/S etc. Then there was the Xbox, PS3 and 360 use PC hardware, just because they had custom chips like the Cell and SPU's in PS3 case, does'nt mean they were not the 1st steps to a PC in a console box.
Then there's the OMG, all the games will look the same, again, hello? what's been most commonly used game engine on PS3/360? Unreal 3 Engine, then you've same middleware physics engines used (Havoc etc), in fact in terms of Multi-platform releases on PS3/360, games have had minor differences between the 2 formats, usually a few frames per second either way, different approach to Anti-Alising and usually better cut scenes on PS3 due to Blu ray, but that's it.
It was the same on PS2/Xbox, Xbox would usually have better frame rate, look sharper, quicker loading and Dolby 5.1 sound, but again, minor differences.
We're not talking the difference between a C64 and ZX Spectrum game or ST and Amiga ground here, so why the panic?.Sheer cost of developing last 2 generation of games, let alone the next, have meant developers work on a game engine than enables quickiest possible conversion of code between all the systems, PC+Console.
I just want something that is as basic as the MD or PCE. You turn it on and bang, there's the game. There's too much going on, especially on the Xbox dashboard. If I want to fucking tweet ill use my PC thanks. Same goes for love film and the like, I don't want them pushed on me every time I switch on my console.
I want cartridges back too, and something that doesn't sound like a jet engine after half an hours play.
Water cooled it is then..
Bitches leave

It is 'funny' how things have turned outover the years, Sony were quick to mock th multi-media approach by 3DO, (compared to the games focuse PSone), calling it 'The Swiss Knife of gaming', it's got a knife, a fork, and a spoon, but you would'nt try and eat your dinner with one' and by PS3, industry was all about your console being your 1 stop device for all your entertainment needs, music, gaming, films etc.
With 360, MS made a lot of noise about Blu ray not being needed as the future was download anyway and the superior online service offered by Xbox Live was paving the way for HD movie downloads, yet looks like Xbox next will be using a Blu ray drive as the broadband infastructure still is'nt ready for a removal of a physical drive and we've still got fair usage limits etc (3 months after i sign upto B.T, 18 month contract, they annouce new, unlimited B.B deal, lol).
Not sure i'd like to see a return to carts per say, but small, high capacity memory cards, would be fantastic and hopefully stop developers wasting so much disc space with so much cut scene crap, thing made worse as none of them are the fantastic story tellers they think they are.
Though Sony appear to have learnt a lot from the PS3 showing, with PS4, i.e this time show REAL game footage, not more duckies in a bath or concept footage, the marketing babble still needs a lot of work done.
PS4 is NOT a 'supercharged' PC, it's using the same power-to-performance chipsets used in tablets etc, the remaining processors and the like won't have the same overhead requirements you'd see on a PC, so why not just say it's been optimised over a PC to deliver entertainment etc?.
A little more honesty this generation could start to repair a lot of the damage Sony have done to themselves with hyping up the PS2, then PS3. Removal of Ken K.was 1st step and good few other steps been taken, but they've a long road ahead.
I suppose Sony has got to be careful this time around not to hype it too much.Â
I am guessing that the PS4 and Xbox 720 will probably be the last consoles to rely on media. It will be downloads from then on.Â
Also as a sidenote : Sony has decided not bring its 4K film service to Europe. This means that its 4K TV is rather hamstrung as it has to rely on upscaling. It still produce great images but, it just seems a bit of a missed opportunity. I wonder whether the PS4 will be able to output to 4K?Â
I take back anything i said about Sony learning with PS4 annoucement, sigh.
During the PS4 'event', Sony released a nice long list of developers who were onboard with PS4, now this clearly came as something as a shock to some of these developers as they had'nt signed up to make PS4 games or had dev.kits or had any PS4 games in development, so now Sony has released a new, much shorter list, 28 developers long.
Missing from new list (and were on the original list) are likes of:
Criterion, Drinkbox, Grasshopper, Rovio+Mojang.
Now, whilst i'm sure Criterion (who had 1st PS2 development kits, optimised games for PS3 etc) will be on-board, along with Grasshopper etc, typical Sony arrogance to make claims on behalf of developers, with out consulting them 1st.
Lets be honest fella. They won't be around long if they don't though lol.
Lets be honest fella. They won't be around long if they don't though lol.
Well, continuing in the honesty approach 🙂
When PSP GO launched (shudder) Capcom bringing Resident Evil to the PSP was a big feature, anyone ever see anything of it, ever?
It's now been over 18 months since a Bioshock game was annouced by Sony etc for PS Vita, Vita sales are, as Sony puts it, 'a little behind on the numbers', so a Vita exclusive Bioshock would do wonders, slight problem though...
Sony STILL has'nt even signed a deal with Take-Two to get the game made.
Maybe Sony outta hold off on annoucements until there's something concretre to annouce!.
Games get canned on all formats, but here were are talking nothing but vapourware with a lot of high profile releases on Sony platforms. You can only cry wolf so many times before the public just start to think, here we go again.
Lets be honest fella. They won't be around long if they don't though lol.
Why do you say that? I can't see the PS4 being the be all and end all.
