There is a far bit of news and rumours around the PS4 at the moment and a lot of reports that it will be officially announced at the 'Playstation 2013' event on Feb 20th.
I though we should start a thread like the Wii U one, so there isnt multiple threads around the same subject.
So i will kick off with the controller news:
Report: PlayStation 4 controller prototype caught on camera

An image purportedly depicting a prototype controller for Sony's next PlayStation has surfaced. Posted on Destructoid, the image reveals a controller with many similarities to Sony's typical DualShock design, albeit with a few cosmetic alterations like rounded sides, differently shaped analog sticks and a D-pad that looks very similar to the one used on the PlayStation Vita.
A few atypical features include what appears to be a touchpad similar to the rear touchpad on the Vita, a built-in speaker and a strange, glowing bar. The bar bears some likeness to the otherworldly glow of a a PlayStation Move, suggesting the controller could have built-in motion tracking.
According to sources at IGN, the controller is indeed real, though it's an early prototype and possibly very different from the final design. Sony is widely expected to unveil its next PlayStation at an event next Wednesday, and hopefully we'll know more by then.
apologies for the double post:
Another PS4 prototype controller photo

Another photo claimed to be of a PS4 controller prototype appeared today, bearing strong similarity to the photo which appeared yesterday. What newly shows up in this photo is what's apparently a 3.5mm audio jack situated on the side below the PS button. The photo can be traced back to the GameTrailers forum, although it's unclear if the poster was who genuinely took it.
Destructoid posted a photo yesterday of a similar-looking prototype controller, with the same rounded sides, differently shaped analog sticks, and what's apparently a small touchscreen at the top. The previous photo also showed a bar with a similar glow to that of the PlayStation Move, suggesting the controller has motion tracking built-in. Sources at IGN indicated that photo was the real deal, but that it was of an early prototype.
We may know more about the next PlayStation console and its controllers following next week's PlayStation 2013 event, where Sony's expected to announce the PS3's successor.
It's supposed to be genuine, the touch screen is of a 2-touch type, similar to that used on Vita, the glowing bar replaces the 'orb' on Sonys Sex Toy, sorry Move, for the new Eye Toy (Dual Cameras) to track.
That's an 'advanced stage' PS4 dev.kit behind it as well.
So, motion control and touch screen out of the box eh Sony? my 2 most hated things in gaming, great......
Wonder how much you'll be charging for extra pads given the price a bloody std PS3 pad goes for (paid £35 for mine few months back).
More i see of 'Next Gen', less i like the look of it.
EDIT/UPDATE:
Changes made to it from PS3 pad:
D-Pad from Vita.
Select+Start buttons moved.
Tiggers now concave, to be more comfortable for long periods of play.
Touch screen is pushable (so acts as extra button if needed)
Face buttons are digital.
Spare pads will retail for £1 Trillion pounds Bwaaaah Haaaa Haaaa
**I 'may' of made the last 1 up
🙂
Before we put faith in these shots, i call PS3 'Boomerang' pad reveal anyone?.
PlayStation 4 to 'offer full game streaming'
Sony's PlayStation 4 will have the ability to stream full games online.
The platform holder will use the technology it acquired when it purchased cloud gaming firm Gaikai to bring the service to its next-generation system.
Sony will use the streaming system as a means of allowing players to run PS3 titles on the new machine and may offer a rental or subscription service, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Sony is widely expected to unveil the PS4 at its February 20 press conference, with images of what is believed to be prototype controllers for the console recently leaking online.
The peripherals appear similar in design to the standard PS3 controller, except with a touchpad at the centre and a light at the top that is expected to function in the same way as the orb at the end of the Move controller.
Details on the hardware specs for Sony's new console were recently leaked along with reports that the system will feature 4K resolution support in line with a rumoured new range of Sony TVs.
Sony will allegedly demonstrate the streaming technology alongside the console at next Wednesday's event

😮
Personally, I have very little interest in the hardware specs or the controller design. I'm sure the specs will be sufficiently beyond current gen and I'm sure there will be alternate controller options for most of the retro inspired games/genres that I'll be playing.
But, I'm worried about all the rumors of DRM locking and increases in digital distribution/streaming. Most DRM discussions seem to be centered on blocking the sale of used games... I'm more concerned that if all next gen games are locked to a single console and require internet verification before playing then all purchases will have an expiration date. Before building a PS4 library, I want some assurance that I'll still be able to play my PS4 games 10 or 20 years from now... even if I've burned out three PS4 consoles or if Sony is out of business/sold off their games division. If they plan on migrating to the Gaikai streaming games business model, or increasing the PSN+ practice of 'free' games that will eventually expire, or using a DRM model that requires a constant PSN connection then I might be sticking with the Wii U exclusively.
Are they heading towards single user, digital distribution, 'disposable' gaming for maximum profit??

Speaking as part of the Playstation owning community (PS1, PS2, numerous PSP's+a PS3), i recal asking Sony to for inspire, rather than copying what others were doing, better customer service, far less unrealistic claims of 'Power of the hardware', a more dedicated games machine and none of this motion control/touch screen crap.
From what i've seen so far, they've served up a controller that would shame Blaze's R+D dept (all it's missing is the kitchen sink and knowing Sony that'll be served up on the Mk 2 version) and is offering motion control out the box.
Which community exactly have they listen too?
The streaming service, i grant you makes perfect sense, they recently bought a streaming company, putting CELL into PS4 would ramp costs up etc, but the pad? never again should people mock the Jaguar pad for having too much cramned onto it after this abortion.
The DRM stuff, at risk of repeating myself, so far ONLY Sony Japan in favour of such moves, Sony USA very much again'st.
There's more chance of me buying a Casio Loopy than a PS4 the way Sony has shafted it's customers this generation! >:(

And the generation before that! Bloody PS2 Memory Cards etc.
Sound the trumpets and bang the drums a new dawn of gaming is upon us!!! 😛
Seriously though I am pretty excited to see what they show next week.
