As we know back in the 80's every man and his dog tried to release an 8-bit computer and get a slice of the growing market.
One of the more interesting computers to arrive on the scene was the powerful Enterprise.

After a number of delays it finally came out in 1985 and while it was praised for it's attractive and innovative design and impressive technical specs it failed to capture the market. Coming in 2 forms, a 64k version and a 128k model, it used a Z80 CPU (same as the Spectrum, MSX and Amstrad CPC) running at a fast 4mhz. It also came with built in BASIC and even more interesting a built in Word Processor too!

It was helped along by two application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chips take some of the workload off of the central processor. They are named "Nick" and "Dave" after their designers, Nick Toop, who had previously worked on the Acorn Atom, and Dave Woodfield. "Nick" manages graphics, while "Dave" handles sound and memory paging (bank switching).

Probably the most innovative feature was it's bulit in joystick and its programmable function keys are also a very notable feature too. Royal College of Art graduates Geoff Hollington and Nick Oakley were responsible for the design which was said to be expensive to produce adding to the cost of the machine. The low-profile keyboard is constructed with mechanical keycaps on top of a rubber membrane so was much more durable than other keyboards of the time but the actual feel of the keys was disliked by some people.

After the initial manufacturing run of just 80,000 units, it is believed that no further units were made. This makes the Enterprise an extraordinarily collectable and rare item. The company also shipped 20,000 units to Hungary on its closure where a strong user community formed that still support the machine to this day. Many of the games released for machine were simple Spectrum or Amstrad ports but there are a few that take advantage of its extra abilities.

An integrated joystick? Cool!
Anyone own one?
Anyone own one?
Sadly not, I just missed out on one a while ago though which I was gutted about
There was a guy on Retro Gamer forum who was from Hungary and had a spare one to trade but was local pick-up only. This was just after I had moved house and guess what? He lived where I had just moved from, I couldn't believe it. I tried to find someone who could do the trade for me but by the time I did somebody had snapped it up >:(
Splut! That is awful Laird.
Boy, that sucks!

Airwolf looked good. I kept trying to stop Batman from playing. lol! Each new room just kept me watching, maybe hoping it would get better. The Batcraft at the end looked cool!
