I did a search and didn't find any topic about this so hopefully it hasn't been done already. I used to have all my retro consoles hooked up to an old CRT TV but over the last little while I've been slowly moving most of them to my LCD TV. It started out as a comfort thing as my CRT is in my bedroom with just a chair to sit in and the LCD is in the living room with my big couch to spread out on. I have left the 8 and 16 bit consoles with the CRT as they look like crap on the LCD but everything from the 3DO on has been moved now. I'm using S video for most of them and I have to say from my point of view they actually look better now and the color is much more vibrant on the LCD. I'm sure there are purists here who will disagree so let's hear it. At what console generation do you switch from CRT to LCD or for the people who don't play modern consoles do you use LCD at all?
I use an LCD now after the big CRT TV I had started to go funny. The picture quality is definately better but there is one big problem with it - you can't use light guns >:(
CRT > LCD
I have 6 working CRT TV's and just replaced my CRT computer monitor which died a few months ago. I'll not switch to LCD until they've all stopped working and I can no longer find a replacement or fix one. I just fixed a CRT TV yesterday. I'm not downgrading anytime soon.
Also, RGB > S-Video.
I use CRTs for everything before current gen (up to 480p). SCART RGB input whenever possible for older consoles.
CRTs are brighter, crisper, don't require a trade-off between motion blur/input lag, and have authentic scanlines... and they support light guns.
RGB is pretty uncommon here in North America. I've never had a TV that had that connection but from what I've seen and read it is much better. Are you using a monitor Tom?
My main CRT is an NEC XM29. It's an old multimedia presentation monitor with a bunch of inputs... VGA, RGB, s-video, composite. It runs NTSC or PAL and it supports standard def (15kHz), 480p, and some higher resolutions for PCs. Also, the shell is rectangular and sturdy so it can stand on its side for vertical arcade games/shmups. Had to drive a couple hours to pick it up but it was worth the effort. 🙂
WOW!!! That's quite the collection. Your main NEC sounds perfect with all those inputs and the PAL option. I'll have to keep my eyes open for something like that. Thanks for the info.
I use mainly LCD because the screen is larger. I do have a 13" CRT TV that I must use with the INTV as this system does not like LCD TV's at all. I'm right now in search of a larger CRT TV (at least 19") to play light gun games on my 7800 and for the INTV.Â
I use and will be using CRTs until the last day. On classic consoles CRT + RGB = Pure awesomeness!
Don't be surprised, my broken English is legendary!
I am using my HD crt TV it is a piece of awesomeness.
HD CRT + RGB = Awesomeness at its best.

wish I could find one locally...
I was finally able to find a 19" CRT TV. It is not HD but it is better than having a 13" CRT TV!
Yeah I must admit the HD is only up scaled and sometimes it's not that great to be honest depending in the game.
