I think Tom is looking at this the right way.  The system is not important here but Tom still makes a good point regarding systems that could probably have CE/CE DX running on them anyway.

So, we're on a retro forum.....

Retro, literally, is something current imitating something from the past.  Both these Pac-Man games do a great job of imitating the styles of the original Pac-Man. Fashionistas will know that skinny jeans are popular now and also that these decidedly dodgy clothes are retro.  I wore skinny jeans in the 80s when I was a lad! I may have to join in and get a pair to see if I feel young again, but that's beside the point.  The skinny jeans, now worn by hipsters everywhere, were probably not made in the 80s.  They're made by Levis & TopMan and probably even Tesco and ASDA. They're in high street stores now and they're new, but retro.  PacMan CE / CE DX are new, but retro.

Retro for me is is pre-2000, Pacman CE is no doubt a retro styled game but, for me, it's not retro as it's a modern game on a modern machine no matter what it's roots are.

I didn't mean to introduce this as a discussion to this thread.  I don't usually engage in such discussions! It's interesting tho isn't it? Retro is a word with one meaning - to describe one thing imitating another thing from the past. It doesn't mean 'old'.  That's it.  No room for debate. However, place that word amongst a video game community and it develops new meaning. And not just one new meaning as I know I've read in threads elsewhere. The definition of retro is all I need to know, but I'm happy to make allowances for nuances, and perhaps some literary licence, to enjoy my hobby. But 'Retro' is a misnomer when it comes our beloved hobby because it means we play games like the ones we played in the 'recent past'*, and not actually the games from the past.... hmmm...

*here's the bit about where to draw the line. Like Laird says, 2000 is as good a year as any.

I had one of those round yellow handheld pacman game units so dunno if that counts but that was the one I remember most and had most fun with... that and my speak and spell lol

Oh! I didn't know it was a "poll" poll.  The app I use (Tapatalk) does not support polls, I guess.

I just cast my vote: Pac-Man, of course.

I sucked at the game though.  It wasn't until my MAME'ing days, about 10 years ago, that I got somewhat good.

Ms.Pacman for myself.

Reason? fond memories of myself and a mate hammering it on the VCS many years ago, on big, old style cabinet TV (wood doors on the front, had to wait for the valves to warm up, that kinda old telly).Just thinking back to it now, still recal the old warm valve smell TV used to kick out....

Anywho, just simple, competive fun, between the 2 of us, high scores to beat etc.
