Yep, 25 years ago today the first Sonic game was released! Who else is feeling old?

Supposedly they are working on a new game, but considering the quality of the last few Sonic games I'm not going to get too excited!

There's a Humble Bundle available right now to celebrate if anyone is interested.

I still think the original 16 bit games are some of the best platformers ever made :)

I saw this on Amazon.  They have a whole new banner for it in celebration of the 25 years.

Going to the final frontier, gaming...

I sold my Amiga 500 to purchase an imported Asian Megadrive in 1991 (Which I'm a little embarrassed about but hey I was 16). The first two games purchased were Street Smart and Golden Axe but I got Sonic pretty much on release. The speed and polish of the game was something to behold, nothing had looked like Sonic outside the arcade in terms of speed - Dont forget Super Mario World didn't hit UK shores until April 11 1992.

Over time with shoddy 3D versions, milking of the franchise and Sega's slow demise Sonic hasn't been the Mario beater it was once lauded as but the 16 bit titles are still a great games to introduce novice gamer's too, certainly my 4 year old can hum the Sonic tune unaided and shouts Sega when ever she sees its loading screen.

Iconic, loud, brash and instantly playable. The 2D games were very important to Sega and on the platforming genre. It helped define system "Mascots", it also gave a kick up Nintendo backside to make Mario better in my opinion.

Great story, and summary of what made the original games so good :)

Its a game that definitely deserves anniversary celebrations, the original was and still is a pleasure to play, the speed, the colours and the gameplay are all sublime..

Saturn

Love the Sonic games from way back. Playing Sonic CD is still one of my favorite things to do when I have spare time. Probably the best of the franchise imho. I'm tempted to go all in on the Bundle to have everything collectively in Steam but I own most of it on other platforms already.
Great deal, thanks for the heads up. :)

Played through them all via emulation earlier this year, imo only the Megadrive and GBA versions are worth playing, the others esp the 3D games and latter 2D crap on android/ios are awful and take away the skill.

They have dragged his name through the mud for 20 years, sorry Sega but you have to let this hedgehog lie now please!!

They tried that with the the android, iOS versions, but they just can't help themselves and add crap like that stupid dash jump thing, episode 2 was a bit better but again it treats gamers like 6 year olds like most android, iOS games do!

I still think the first Sonic Adventure game on the Dreamcast was pretty good, but other than that I have to agree with Jay in that most of the games after the originals have been crap. It has been confirmed by Sega that they are working on a new game to be released next year, maybe this is the one where they get back on track!
