A New Speccy Is Coming

The details are thin on the ground at the moment..

Here's what we know.

That looks nice.  The design is pretty sleek.

I definitely like the new look though!  ;D

Does look good..

Let me ask this question.. Is it needed?

Well if playing speccy games is all you want from this machine then no. However, if you want specy games that are on the level of Halo, this could be helpful.  ;D

Apparently this new unit uses a 3.5 MHZ Z80 and claims to be faster but the original Speccy's also used those clock rates as well, so I guess the claim that this one is faster is either due to the hardware being updated to be more efficient( which may cause issues with timing on some games)or that this 1GHZ accelerator is why they claim it to be faster. Since the details are almost non-existent it is hard to say. As cool as an extra 1GHZ more or cycles per frame would be, I doubt it would have any effect on any existing games

I'm interested in seeing this come to market and what exactly it can do. Apparently it can also play the ULA games (is that the term ?), the Russian style speccy games which had tons of colours etc ?

I'm loving being a Speccy fan right now with all these gadgets/books coming out. Think this looks great, on paper it looks good but lets see how it does.

I've pre-ordered the Vega+ and this looks great as well. Who would have thought all these years later these gadgets would be coming out !

Think is mate, I can not see this being cheap. Maybe as much as £200 and that is a killer. Getting all that at the £100 killer price point seems pretty much impossible. We shall see I guess.

I'm sure i read somewhere they said £179.

Still think the price isnt too bad all these years later. Problem is many of these things are a niche product and many are made in the UK so the cost will be high. Its not like a mass production thing in China so its cheap.

Its like the Vega+ with people saying 'if it was £50 i would get it' but thats just not doable. I often wait for these to release (Granted i've backed the Vega+) but 'most' other things i wait for them to be released and to get the general opinion from people.

Think its exciting seeing all these new books/fanzines/consoles/handhelds etc. Plus again i'm amazed a niche magazine like Retro Gamer is around in the year 2016 ! Love it

Agreed mate. But homing did you pay to back the Vega+? I think that was £129 and that's a handheld. These things live or die by there pricing policy so I will be interested to see how this performs at the £179 price point.

I like its real hardware rather just a piece of emulated tat, The compatibility with the Eastern Block Spectrum scene is interesting. I'm not sure how much this will bring to the scene but I would like to be proved wrong, also the price seems a little high.

Crowdfunding is fine for books but for retro hardware I want a complete prototype, running software at a decent price before I want to consider backing it. When funding is just required to make mass production viable rather than gambling on the designer completing the design, then prototyping and finally manufacturing.

The Mega65 is a similar concept on the Commodore scene, as its based on an unreleased C65 Computer /ROM.

Saturn

Definitely interested in this. Can't wait to see the final price is 8)

These types of retrograde computers should not ever cost more than $100(US). The silicon required
to emulate these classics is minimal. Truth be told, you can buy a Raspberry Pi 3 at $35(US)
and can emulate the Speccy almost perfectly. This also has a tried and true ARM 1GHZ QUAD Core
processor and can emulate just about anything classic. It MIGHT, and I emphasize MIGHT be able
to even pull off emulating a Jaguar( not holding my breath on that one though.)

These types of kick start projects are a get rich quick scam in my mind. Get yourself a Pi 3
and design a nice case your self for it. It would be a much cheaper and more sensible product
well worth the money, not to mention be able to do a ton of other systems out of the box by simply
downloading the emulators needed. It can use any number of keyboards, mice and USB as well as blue
tooth controllers.
