Yo :113:

I posted up some games I picked up for these systems, then realised we didnt have threads for them yet.....

Can we have some? They are in the same generation as the Gamecube and given they've been superseed twice over now (PS2>PS3>PS4, Xbox>X360>XOne) I think they are retro?

TL

I personally don't consider them retro but some people do, nothing stopping you starting threads on them though!

Well, let's think here for a moment.

OK, so, most people consider 2001 to be where things stop being retro, right? So, from here to 2000, that's 14 years. Thus, we can consider the 'retro age' to be 14 years old. Still with me here?

Playstation 2 hit Japan in 2000. So I'd say, technically, that counts, although it might need maybe ONE more year to make it official. Gamecube hit Japan in 2001. 13 years. Not quite, technically, although we're talking mostly the same obvious capabilities as the PS2. And finally, the XBOX came out in 2001, the same year.

So generally? I'd give the PS2 it a year before I feel really comfortable calling it retro, and 2 for the other two you've mentioned. But given that most of the internet is comfortable with making 2000 the last 'retro' year, that's how I see it.

Also, technically, I'd say the PS2/Gamecube/XBOX era was the last real era of 'retro' consoles. While there was online play on two of the systems, there wasn't a focus on it. There was no DLC, no friends menu to deal with, and none of the annoyances and such that the systems that came after just aren't there.

EDIT: Actually, let's make it a nice, round number and say the 'retro age' is 15 years. So, not quite, but we're getting there.

I suppose making a 15 year rule is a simple way of saying what is retro and what isn't. I'm not in a position to judge whether that's right, so all I can say is that a person's age has a lot to do with the new/retro cutoff. For me -as a very old man- it was way before that time, as the biggest change ever in gaming was surely in the mid 90s with the Playstation and the virtual end of 2D gaming.

No doubt the teenagers of today will look at the Xbox One as retro in fifteen years time, so it's ever changing, but still, that mid nineties revolution was the biggest shift from what I can see. That and the launch of the GX4000.

You can start threads for any of those systems and we do have an area for more modern systems as well.  We also have a thread for modern purchases.

Going to the final frontier, gaming...

I personally think that they would border on retro from time of release into the markets, but because of the advances in 3d gaming thanks to these machines they represent the recent remnant that became xbox360 in 2005 and ps3 in 2006, so in actual fact those consoles of 2000's really only had a console life of 4-5years with GameCube discontinued in 2007, making it 8 years old since they were readily available so its not even dead 10 years out of existence , original Xbox fairs out at 9 years again under 10 years out mark, but ps2 have lasted longer been phased out only last January.

So they can't be classed as vintage consoles in my opinion, like the Atari ones or Nintendo of old, even the N64 is between 5th and 6th generation, been disconnected in 2003, 11 years you could purchase this machine new from stores. So I believe machine which predate the Playstation one are vintage with a lineage of over 15-20 years out of circulation to customers, but this excludes Brazil, as I think you can purchase them brand new there or maybe I'm wrong.

This is a never ending topic as one person retro is another persons current gen.

There are all types of conditions that people make, saying what is retro what is not. Be it years since realeased are games still made for them etc, each and every opnion will always have a counter argument as that is just the way it is.

Due to the nature of the orginal question it becomes a personal standpoint the same as is 8 bit retro is 16 bit retro and on and on.

So my personal answer is yes post the threads as in all honesty, if you dont agree or dont like to read about those machines you really dont have too.

I don't personally believe that you should judge a console's 'retroness' by when they stopped making games for it, honestly. As a system's popularity determines how long it lasts on the market, that kind of thing turns it into more of a popularity contest. It kind of gives the message to me that 'If this thing is popular, it can't be retro', and I don't like that kind of message. At least, in my opinion.

Some thoughts....

Are we really going to call GTA V 'retro' in an arbitrary number of years?  How about Super Mario 3D World or Rain? I'm not sure.  These will all certainly go down as classics though.

The leaps forward between generations has been getting smaller and smaller.  In terms of considering what hardware is 'retro' and when, then this gap should be ever widening.

Management is always looking to improve the site, so I suggest using the generations term. There should be no hard feelings if retro consoles become generation I to III and modern becomes generation IV to present.

This is not written in stone so feel free to expand. Or how about Pre-School(1970's), Middle School(1980's), High School(1990's) and After School(everything after 2000). :21:
