One of video gaming's biggest mysteries has always been what happened to the SNES CD? We all know that both Philips and Sony worked on the unit, with the later going to develop it into the best selling PlayStation after Nintendo pulled out the deal. But no prototypes have ever surfaced or any official docs detailing the technical specifications - until now that is!

Steve Lin of GREEGames, and huge retro fan has been tweeting some very important things of late. These included a photograph that showed several internal Nintendo folders packed to the brim with documents, which he subsequently promised scan and upload online.

Lin followed up by uploading to Twitter countless pages and scans detailing the specifications of the SNES-CD add-on, along with programming guides and much much more, which has filled huge gaps in video game history. The entire collection has been archived in PDF format so we can finally find out what this fabled add-on was all about and dream about what could have been!

I like the design. Some good info. Does anyone know of any names of the CD's that would have been released? I always hoped for a version of Road Rash and a Super Mario type game.

Its great news indeed, i have tweeted him about the docs and there are loads more besides the CD rom docs so watch this space.

Also i wonder is the docs released would be enough for someone to create the drive now??? Homebrew CD games and much more??

That was an interesting video indeed!  Looks like Nintendo had something to do with the PS1 coming to market.

Just a bit! If Nintendo hadn't cancelled the SNES CD then Sony probably wouldn't have ever entered the console market.
