Its definitely a cultural thing with Nintendo of America. I suppose they could really sell it to Middle America.

Such a shame that now audiences are more matured we don't have the original story lines available in English.

oh well

There are fan translations, though how close they are to the original source text can be dubious.

Nintendo games are not the only things that have been affected by censors.  Even morals at the end of cartoons have been removed by censors here in the US!

I remember the first time I played SNES Wolfenstein 3D and saw how censored it was, it seemed a lot less fun without the Nazi's and the German speech  :47:

And the box art is amazingly lame too:

I will always remember laughing at my one SNES owning friend when Mortal Kombat came out and his version lacked all the blood and proper death moves.

On the retail version yes, But amazingly when the crackers and scene releasers got their hands on it, they changed that sweat colour to the blood colour, with a blood hack which was only available to those that had a magic gate or super wild card or Pro Fighter Q backup devices for their super NES's.

I was lucky and still am to own one of these devices, and a correction all death moves were presence in the snes version, I played it to death and was able to pull all Fatalities off, the only different was the sweat instead of blood and Kano had no heart in his hands. But didn't they lock the blood off in the Gensis version of MK 1 (USA)? As there is a cheat code to unlock it.

But things completely changed when MK 2 arrived, it was arcade perfect on the Snes, smoking :113:

Here a video of the blood hack

I always thought the censoring of the girls in Final Fight on SNES was stupid when Street Fighter II had Chun Li in it.

So, based on this I am going to guess the censorship was then coming directly from Nintendo?  Or was the friend you were referring to in the US?

Looking around the net you can find leaked documents from Nintendo requesting certain things be changed in various games on both SNES and NES.

Oh yeah it was all from Nintendo themselves, see Wolfenstein 3D that I posted above Nintendo made id Software butcher that and the programmers were so annoyed they said they would never work for Nintendo again.

I guess they didn't want to tarnish their "family" identity!  LOL

to be fair their aggressive single mindedness did pay off in the long run. The Wii and the pointless Wii U remain very family orientated
