As the headers states, I was watching a YT video the other day and the presenter made a very valid point regarding classic movies getting the video game conversion treatment and though this would make for some great conversations here at the forum, not just on this subject along, but many others, why companies haven't done this or that? and rather than simply suggesting a film or whatever, try to have an explanation to why you think such things should of been done this way and why? and why didn't they?[/align:2uwpbyni]
so I'll start the ball rolling, with some
Why don't we get games based on old movies anymore?
example of this , back in 2006, we started to get some really old classic movies being turned into really good games, taking there time to really understand the film idea and then translate that into a video game.
Games like The Warriors from Rockstar, The Thing, Jaws, The Godfather and Scarface and then they stopped? so I decided put together a list of old classic films that could make if given the time, really good games and they are......
1.Escape from New York (1981) (Namco's defunct title) remade for today gamers, I reckon would be so ace..playing as Snake Plisken, maybe a GTA style game in attempt to rescue the president.
2.Mad Max 1 or 2 : The Road Warrior (1979 / 1981) simply amazes me to why this has never been given the video game treatment remade about the films? so much could be done with this idea, you could of had driving bits, platform bits, fighting bits, simply why this never got made into a game is beyond me? and I'm excluding Road Rash (Mega-drive etc..) and Overlander (Snes etc..) from this.
3.The Goonies (1985) Yes I know they did the 8-bit versions, but imagine replaying this in like say a "Tomb Raider" fashion? or co-op gameplay , play as Sloth, or play as the bad guys?, puzzle solving, QTE's, it makes my blood boil ... why they won't or don't remake games like this. >:(
4.Big Trouble in Little China (1986) I'm not even gonna mention the c64 version..but that's now 2 John Carpenter films that have being completely over looked here, Martial arts and Chinese Magic of the darkest kind..a sure hit if you ask me..
5.Game Of Death (1972) Bruce Lee's last movie, and I know Kung Fu Master is more or less a rip of this idea, but..man, this could of being probably one of the best Bruce lee games matched only by the original Bruce Lee from Datasoft, or maybe done them in a filmography style game of all his movies from Fists of Fury, Big Boss, Way of the Dragon and Game of Death? and could make in the vision he wanted it in a video game form? (and don't even mention the GBA game or the Xbox game)
6.The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (1967) the movie that spawned and influenced the classic game Red Dead Revolver, but I'm sorry, this is not the same thing as having Clint Eastwood, or Lee Van Cheef or Eli Wallach been portrayed as themselves from the movie in a video game, and the story was brilliant too..so much could of been done to this? with added epic-ness of Ennio Morricone's music tagged in there.
so these are only a few, tell us what you think and maybe add some of your own and why..we'll run this for a week or so, and who ever has the next great idea on a different subject in this formula, we'll do it..
happy trails
Great topic, great idea and great post
Is this going to always be games related? If so we should move it to the games section!
It's a brilliant point, I own Scarface and The Godfather for the Wii and they are excellent and I would have loved to have seen more games like this. Mad Max, Big Trouble In Little China and Escape From New York would all make an amazing subject matter for a game. I will now throw in my 2 pence worth with 5 of my own:
Day Of The Triffids (1962) - John Wyndham's 1951 novel has been made into one feature film (in 1962), three radio drama series (in 1957, 1968 and 2008), and two TV series (in 1981 and 2009). The compelling story and original concept would make an absolutely fantastic game.
Natural Born Killers (1994) - Oliver Stone's gritty thriller starring Juliette Lewis and Woddy Harrelson about two victims of traumatic childhoods who became lovers and mass murderers, and are irresponsibly glorified by the mass media, would make for a great game. Especially with a two player mode where one of you can play as Mickey and the other as Mallory.
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) - This American action horror film directed by Robert Rodriguez and written by Quentin Tarantino stars Harvey Keitel, George Clooney, Tarantino himself and Juliette Lewis. With vampires being all the rage these days (thanks to Twilight) it would be a great time to resurrect one of the best movies on the subject ever made.
Westworld (1973) - This science fiction-thriller film was written and directed by novelist Michael Crichton and starred Yul Brynner as an android in a futuristic Western-themed amusement park, and Richard Benjamin and James Brolin as guests of the park. This film is a cult classic and would make a great game as you try to escape from the park and save all the other guests.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) - Rather than basing the game on just one film in the classic horror series, written and directed by Wes Craven and starring Robert Englund, it could be an original story that sees you trying to escape Freddy in a series of dream themed levels leading to a final showdown with the slasher himself.
some cracking game remade ideas there..it seem there could be nearly an entire year's worth of releases in just the first 2 posts, and I'm really dying to hear what the other members here will come with..
And yes this thread is based on Games related subjects, concepts and idea for new and old IP's or new ideas all together
.
Fantastic thread! and i'll (attempt) to answer your question, lol
You've only to look at the polar extremes in terms of quality that's been served up by game based on a classic film and everything depends on how the subject material has been handled, things like:
Robocop 3 (D.I.D on ST/Amiga), The Untouchables (Ocean 8/16 Bit Micro's), Robocop (arcade/Speccy), Star Wars Trilogy (arcades), Batman:The Movie (8/16 Bit Ocean), Platoon (C64), Alien 3 (Snes+MD), Alien (8 Bits), Aliens (UK version/Electric Dreams), Batman Returns (MCD 3D stages)N64 Golden Eye etc etc show what can been done, but these are the choice few amongst so many wasted attempts.
All too often it's a case of money squandered on buying the film rights, game reduced to a bog std clone of what ever is currently popular be it platformer, hack n slash, stealth, driving game, FPS or what ever.
You mention Bruce Lee:I'm a huge fan of the C64/A8 game, as well as the GBA game, good use of the character given hardware limits, but the Xbox game which i honestly bought just to see how bad it really was, is a massive missed op.
I see your Game Of Death idea and raise you an Enter The Dragon!.Todays technology custom made for such a game, i envisage a massive on-line Hans Tournament with players journeying with Lee, Roper and Williams, with SP campain seeing you doing the sneaky+fighting sections as Lee whilst you try and discover more about Hans island, a moral choice Mass effect style quest stage as Roper as Han shows you the real underside of his world and makes you an offer, plus of course boss fight style fights between Williams (bullshit Mr Han Man!) and the classic face off between Lee+Han.
Jaws? been done on NESÂ by LJN along with ST (Screen 7), Arcade (by ATARI)-Never played any of these, but heard mixed reports, i do own the PS2 game by Ecco The Dolphin creators, ruined by god awful camera system.
And we've only to look at recent Aliens:C.M game to see how a huge franchise can be wasted.....
So, i'm going to 'challenge you' here Grey, i ONLY want to see future games done on classic films if they use the subject material properly.
Huge fan of Scarface on XBOX, far better i found than GTA:S.A and proves you can do games based on films, by changing events, creating a what if...scenario.
I want to know why......
-We've never seen a Dan Dare game since the 8 Bit Trilogy
-We don't see games written for the host machine that use the same name, but are very different games, anymore.
Dan Dare on Spectrum was different game to the C64 version, both superb, as were Alien 3 on MD+SNES, Dune+J.Park+Terminator on MCD different and far better than Cart based MD versions
.Also i want to see the return of S.E versions of games:Things like Eternal Champions, Terminator, Batman Returns on MCD arrived later than cart versions (along with Thunderhawk-same name, but totally different game to Amiga/ST version), but this time, i want to see console+PC versions being totally different games.
It'd put an end to (pointless) comparison threads between the platforms (set in stone console specs VS ever changing PC specs) and would'nt impose the restrictions on PC games that often occur.
I also want to see handheld versions written specifically for the handheld, not near as we can make it port from PS3 conversions to Vita.
I also want to know why:
-I cannot (well, outside of here), question the actions of a company that makes a device i own, or question the quality of games on it, without being called a fanboy or hater.....
I've paid my money, i put in the hours to earn and now i'm going to express just how it's delivered on it's potential.
-I cannot leave feedback on a publication i've paid for in advance, when it fails to deliver what i expected, or i know more about a piece i'm reading, than the person who wrote it, or it's painting a different picture to what actually happened, without the publication staff, or those connected too it, or groupies, jumping down my throat.
-My PS3 refuses to connect properly to my BT Home Hub MK 3
The first movie that comes to mind for me is The Last Starfighter
Just looking this up I see there was a fan made game last year for PC but it's just a recreation of the actual arcade game in the movie. I'd like to see a game based on the whole movie and maybe make the arcade game a mini game within it.

Atari Inc had a 3D polygon coin-op planned (using M68000 as CPU) which would have re-created scenes from the movie and used same controller as 1 found in Starwars coin-op, but it was canned as retail price of machine would have been too high.
Atari 2600 Solaris started off as a Last Starfighter game as did 8 Bit micro versions of Star Raiders 2 and C64 Uridium ended up as a Last starfighter game on NES.
Brilliant topic. But to answer your question. Back when movie tie ins where common the movie industry was much bigger than the gaming industry. This is no longer the case, so I suspect the need to do it is no longer there.

Very good point. Now we see more movies based on games.

You are missing the point mate.
We recently (as in couple of years ago) received loads of games based on old movies and Greyfox is wondering why this stopped and is asking what games you would like to see based on old films.
It's slowed, but not stopped, after all Aliens is how many years old now?.
Not sure how the cost of getting film rights works, are older films cheaper i wonder?.
seems quality no issue as after all during the ST/Amiga days we had things like Plan 9 From Outer Space.
Threads jogged my memory, Amiga Sinbad game, original or based on the films?.
Mentioned that ST game based on Jaws, just found ACE review of, no surprise to learn game was awful, scored mere 475/1000.
