So the modern Atari continue to disgrace their heritage, ruin their classic IP and find new ways to scrape the bottom of a barrel with Haunted House for iOS. So I thought it would be interesting to discuss what we would do with the IP!
A few things to bare in mind before we start - what they actually own! So Atari Inc. are owned by Atari SA, the French company formally known as Infogrames. They own all the assets and IP of the former Atari Corp., which includes arcade games made before the split in 1984 and anything released for the home machines. So with that in mind here are a few idea of my own, some of which have already been tried but done wrong:
Star Raiders - So this one they already did, but proper buggered it up. Think a massive online game where people can trade, attack other people, visit planets, upgrade their ships and form alliances and federations. Something like Elite but on a modern much grander scale with the key being the online multiplayer, this could be epic.
Outlaw - Not original at all but why not just do something like Red Dead Redemption? A GTA style game set in the wild west but to make things a bit cooler add a special mode with plain old blocky graphics!
Adventure - The original RPG game in many ways, the potential to make a new epic RPG using this IP is seemingly obvious and the idea surrounding it endless. I am really shocked they haven't already done this.
Video Olympics - A fun and humorous multiplayer party game that includes all of the original modes plus new ones taken from other old paddles games Street Racer, Night Driver, Warlords, Circus Atari and Super Breakout. Comes bundled with an original authentic 2600 paddle controller!
Video Pinball - Everyone is loving pinball games right now so why not just create a compilation of all the old Atari pinball tables on one disc? Seems a no brainer after the success of the many other pinball collections out there.
