Pitfall! Remake hits IOS

Activision is about to launch another game from its back catalogue of Atari hits onto the App Store tomorrow in the form of Pitfall on its 30th anniversary.

Only this isn't the Pitfall you may (or may not) remember from back in the early '80s.

Rather than retain the traditional 2D side-on view of the original and maybe throw in some better graphics, Activision has decided to turn Pitfall into... wait for it... a 3D endless-runner.

In a way, it's a move that makes total sense given the original's emphasis on timed jumps over complicated platforming, but it's still a tiny bit disappointing for this ancient gamer.

You won't just be leaping onto crocodiles and swinging from ropes this time around, by the way. Instead, there are vehicles like motorbikes and a minecart for you to travel on, as well as a levelling system and a variety of locales to dash through.

Pitfall!TM will be swinging onto the App Store tomorrow, priced 69p / 99c.

Genius or Epic fail.....?

I like the look of that but I appreciate what The Laird is saying. It's shit compared to the original as its not really like it.

I bought this today..and it's actually really good..basically it's a temple run / the end rip off, it's a rail running game, you jump, duck, swipe left and right and tap to whip on coming snakes and scorpions , the graphics are really good in place and the cave mines area is like a direct lift form Indiana jones and the temple of doom..all in all..if you loved pitfall and that is probably most of us..then you'll get this for this ideal that the original will be hidden in their somewhere , which it better be!, hence why I got it, but charging you for something that can be got elsewhere for free in the likes of temple run, which is more or less pitfall in this 3d layout anyway, then this game is not worth the purchase. But in fairness to them, they have made a beautiful little game on the temple run take..so the decision is yours :)

I grabbed it today aswell, think its a pretty decent game with great controls and a lot of replayability with the checkpoints and upgrades available.

If you wanna bring Pitfall right up to date then this is the way to do it, if you want the original Pitfall then go play it on the 2600.

I wouldn't say it looks "up to date" either. Granted, I haven't played it but by the looks
of it, I wouldn't want to.

I'll stick to the original thanks.  :D

Pretty much how I feel, it's not a Pitfall game for me. Probably why David Crane is now doing his own game.

Its actually a very good, playable game and retains every part of the original game and puts it in a up to date format.

Its success is shown by the fact its currently in the Top 10 paid apps on the App Store, with a 4.5/5 user rating average which is quite a feat considering a lot of people may have never played the original.

From watching that vid it is barely like the original games at all. Dosn't mean its a bad game though, its just not Pitfall!

That's my take on it as well.  It looks like a clone of Temple Run, not an updated Pitfall.  Temple Run is a fun game to play, so that doesn't make this a bad game, just not really Pitfall.

They probably just figured the Pitfall name would be a cash cow no matter what the game looked like.

Don't get me wrong. For 69p or 99c I assume for you it's a bargain. Simple as that really.

Oh it is.  But the name will sell it also.  :)
