Wanted to comment about the Gamecube's video quality after reading the 'Favorite Nintendo console' thread, but didn't want to derail that discussion. So... making a new topic in 'Modern Gaming' for anything Gamecube related.
For NTSC consoles, using the Gamecube's digital A/V port and official component cable has offered 480p from the beginning. Display quality on a 480p CRT is excellent... bright and crisp... very similar to Dreamcast using a VGA box and far better than the PS2 at 480p via component. The A/V port was eventually removed from later US consoles but thankfully developers continued to offer a 480p option in almost all NTSC Gamecube games.
From what I've read, the only PAL Gamecube games that offered 480p were Rayman 3 and Godzilla? And, even when played on a Wii that's displaying at 480p, PAL Gamecube games will still only offer PAL (576i) or PAL60(480i)?? yuck.
I've considered importing Doshin the Giant (since it was never released in the US) but not sure now if it would be better to deal with Japanese text and play at 480p or import from the UK and suffer with PAL or PAL60. Or maybe I'd be suffering enough just by playing Doshin the Giant?
There weren't many region exclusive Gamecube games, but both the US and UK/EU really missed out on Kururin Squash and Mr. Driller: Drill Land. Both are amazing and worth importing if you like the genres.
I recently tried my PAL Gamecube via SCART on my HDTV, disaster, the snow sections on Rogue Squadron were rendered unplayable, image quality was that bad, hell even made the PS2, via Component look good 🙂
What happened with Pal Game Cube? was there ever a component out? (i bought mine late, 2nd hand).
Nintendo started manufacturing consoles without the digital A/V connector in 2004. You'd need an earlier console with the digital A/V connector and the official component cable.
Also, from a quick search, it looks like PAL Gamecubes were shipped with a SCART adapter block that just pushes composite video through a SCART cable? The RGB SCART cable was a separate accessory? Wow... no 480p and composite via SCART.
I'm using a 'proper'/Bought on it's own G.C SCART cable on my Cube/HDTV and it's bloody useless.
Europe? Arse end of the world as far as the likes of Sony, MS, Nintendo etc treat us, we pay MORE for LESS....
🙂
Well... just checked ebay prices and shocked to see the official component cable is consistently selling for over $100! Apparently there's some demand for it.
The Gamecube component cable has some proprietary circuitry in the connector housing so there are no 3rd party knock-offs.
Interesting about the component cable. I enjoy the GameCube for Star Wars games and the GameBoy Player.
The NTSC Gameboy Player supports 480p via component. So... there's another reason for the component cable demand on ebay.
Thanks Tom! Another brightspot for the GameCube!
