Thought this would be something interesting to talk about.

For those not following this story I will start with a little history. It was revealed last year that Microsoft paid an undisclosed amount of money to have Rise of the Tomb Raider exclusive on Xbox platforms for an unspecified amount of time. Needless to say a lot of fans were unhappy with this news, leading to some saying they would boycott the game entirely because they didn't agree with this type of business practice.

We already knew it was going to be released this holiday season for 360 and One, but now today in a very odd move Square Enix announced the release times for other platforms. It will be released on Steam in early 2016, and holiday season 2016 for PS4. It was always know it would hit other platforms eventually, but common sense said they wouldn't announce when until after it was released on MS platforms. MS has been quiet on the subject today so it's still not clear if SE was allowed to announce this or if there was some kind of falling out between them.

My take on this is that the whole deal was a bad idea right from the start. MS paid a lot of money and I don't see them making it back. Yes there may be a few hard core Tomb Raider fans who wouldn't otherwise have bought an Xbox One, but not nearly enough to make a difference in console sales. MS looks like a big bully with too much money and SE looks like they sold out. Steam may see good sales of the game coming so soon, but is any PS4 owner going to be excited for this game a year later, and after the very similar and very hyped Uncharted 4 is released? I don't think so and I think this will probably end up being one of the worst selling Tomb Raider games ever.

Anyone else have an opinion? Discuss :)
