Could this mean the end of future retro console games?

(@dougtitchmarsh)

I have read this on a few sites now, and didn't see anyone had posted it here, but it appears Sony has filed a patent which could mark the end of the second hand games market.

What do we think here?

There is a thread about it in the news section but doesn't matter.

I think its shocking, Sony's arrogance continues to astound me.

I have never and will never buy their products.

Just an evolution of what started out on PC:DRM, always on internet connection etc, then hit consoles (Online Pass) etc, newer technology, more patents, but they really don't want a 2nd hand market.

Piracy is rife and very bad i know, but to over look just how many gamers trade games in for new titles or only buy hardware as there's wealth of cheap, used/2nd hand games or mates have 1, so they can borrow games etc, is total ignorance.

Does'nt matter who's pushing the idea:E.A, Sony, Ubisoft etc, soon as 1 starts, others will soon follow suit.

Also 'we' need to look at this in cold light of day, rather than start warming up the torches and pitchforks:

Patent was FILED (but does'nt yet look to have been granted) by SCEJ, NOT SONY as a corp.entity, indeed SCEA's own Jack Tretton has gone on record to say he's VERY MUCH AGAIN'ST the blocking of used games.

So, even IF it does become a reality, it looks like it'd ONLY be Japan Specific.

Websites like Eurogamer etc love this type of story as it generates so much in way of hits.

I'm not looking to defend Sony, but feel it's currently being blown into mountain out of mole hill type scale.

It's got nothing to do with the arrogance of Sony at all, really need to get over that.

Any developer or manufacturer wants to get maximum profits from their products. If this is they way they feel it will happen they will do it.
