MD all the way, apart from the fact that I didn't own any of the others it was games like Sonic and Knuckles, Ristar, Comix Zone and WWF Raw that I played to death on my MD.
QQ; technically the TGX wasn't 16bit right? or am I mad? Just thought I'd ask, I guess it should be in this list as it was a console out at the time that rivalled the SNES and SMD

I already explained that. It was like the Lynx in that it has an 8-bit CPU but a 16-bit graphics chip and was marketed as a 16-bit machine (hence being called TurboGrafx 16 in North America)
sigh... I REMEMBER!! I'm just saying that, as you explained, its not really a true 16 bit machine, and as such I just thought I'd raise the question as I wasn't sure if people just considered it 16bit anyway... because I didn't know either way having not owned one when it was new

It was pretty much always refered to as a 16-bit machine back in the day, just like the Lynx was.
aah ok, that's cool then I just wasn't sure how people perceived it, Its the same thing with the Jag, some people swear blind its not 64bit, others swear blind it is... I don't know personally but seems like a similar situation.
I like it (TGX) a lot so far but as I didn't own it back when it was out and don't think it can really compete with the Mega Drive in terms of its game library and the memories of the MD from my childhood. Had I had one when I was a kid it may have been a different story

The thing is that if you want to get technical then the PC Engine definately is 8-bit and the Jaguar definately is 64-bit, there is absolutely no disputing that.
Its how people percieve things though, the PC Engine/TurboGrafx games looked as good as Mega Drive games so it looked 16-bit. The Jaguar didn't look as good as the PS1, which is 32-bit, so in many peoples eyes there was no way it could be 64-bit. Bits don't really mean that much at the end of the day as the TurboGrafx shows and if you want an even more extreme example then go and look at the 16-bit Intellivision, it doesn't look much better than the Atari 2600 and systems like the Master System and 7800 blow it out the water.
exactly that, perception seems to be everything. either way I like both machines very much

At the time when snes and MD were at each others throats I had both machines and at the time I liked both of them a lot. But the snes held a more magical allure and was therefore my favourite. There was a lot to like about the snes, from it's library of games to it's build quality and comfortable controller, but also this allure was down to me finding out as much as I could about the snes and it's games long before it was released in the UK. I did visit importers but I never parted with the cash due to the high prices - Console Concepts I'm sure charged a small fortune. Anyway, in that sense it had both a magical and mystical appeal that the MD couldn't conjure. (Pun intended)
Ironically, it's the MD I go back to more nowadays so I voted for it! I'm so fickle.
I wouldn't have minded having both when I was a kid, I really like the look of Super Metroid and wish I had been able to try that. but for me the Sega Consoles always ended up being my favourites. Mind you that was mostly to do with the fact that I wasn't of an age where I was aware of consoles in the modern sense that I am now ie: different companies, different capabilities etc, I just got what I was given and couldn't afford anything else! a friend had the Snes or NES and I just always remember arguing over which was best but because neither of us played the other console much we probably really didn't make very good arguments other than personal preference lol
good times!!

I had exactly the same experience during the 8 bit micro years. Much utterly biased fun!
I think we all did!
I still remember having to play my Mega Drive on a black and white tv when I was about 11/12 lol, reason for that was that my mum and dad only had an aerial point in the living room so a colour tv upstairs was pointless as they had no intention of putting aerial points in for my brother and I at that age and they didn't want to spend heaps on colour tvs. so I had a cheap black and white POS from my nans charity shop lol. GREAT DAYS!! Imagine my joy when I finally got a colour tv in my room and could see it in true colour!! Comix Zone in black and white WAS NOT what you would call fun lol

Wow! That sucks! 😮
yeah those were dark days lol, literally!! I can't actually remember when I finally got a colour tv, I think it was around the time I got a Saturn, but I still couldn't watch tv in my room even with aerials and boosters etc.
But yeah regarding 16bit I can't wait to get into the TGX some more, looking forward to playing some 2 player soon too

Sega Mega Drive/Genesis.
Bought the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in 1990. Shortly after in late '91, I bought the Super Nes and TG-16. It was hard trying to purchase new games for all three systems at the same time. Always seemed like when I did buy new, it was for the Mega Drive/Genesis.
