Richard III dig: DNA confirms bones are king's

A skeleton found beneath a Leicester car park has been confirmed as that of English king Richard III

Experts from the Leicester said DNA from the bones matched that of descendants of the monarch's family.

Lead archaeologist Richard Buckley, from the University of Leicester, told a press conference to applause: "Beyond reasonable doubt it's Richard."

Richard, killed in battle in 1485, will be reinterred in Leicester Cathedral.

Mr Buckley said the bones had been subjected to "rigorous study" and had been carbon dated to a period from 1455-1540.

Dr Jo Appleby, an osteo-archaeologist from the university's School of Archaeology and Ancient History, revealed the bones were of a man in his late 20s or early 30s. Richard was 32 when he died.

His skeleton had suffered 10 injuries, including eight to the skull, at around the time of death. Two of the skull wounds were potentially fatal.

The spine was badly curved, a condition known as scoliosis, but there was no trace of a withered arm, as some Tudor historians had claimed Richard had.

Thanks for posting Laird!!!!!
From a historical standpoint this amazing news.
I remember the old tv show In Search of with Spock from Star Trek. One episode talked about Richard III and the Tower of London.

Just recently I had read an article or opinion piece about how William Shakespeare's portrait of Richard helped shape the view of King Richard III as a ruthless tyrant.

I have tried to learn much of the man since he was the last English monarch to wear the white rose of York.

Thanks again!!!!

It's simply incredible that they found him after all this time and that they managed to track down a relative in Canada to match up the DNA with.

I have a great interest in history but especially the royal family as I myself am a direct descendant of James III of Scotland through my mothers family. My avatar is our family crest, the crown on the griffon signifies that we are a royal clan.

It is amazing how science can achieve such results.

Fascinating read on the Clan Forsyth. Lots of interesting pieces. I have read about the Forsyth Clan at the battle of Bannockburn along side Robert the Bruce.

Really cool to be a direct descendant to James III!!!!

So should I start calling you Sir Laird or just plain Laird?  :)

Mike Myers might be acceptable though given that he's born of British parents and also has British (plus American and obviously Canadian) citizenship.  8)

Are we supposed to refer to you as Your Lordship or something of the sort, Laird?  Given your relation to Royalty?  ;)

It's amazing what science can do nowadays.  To be able to match the DNA of skeletal remains to a particular individual is truly remarkable.

I work for the council at the department where the dig was.  Walked passed the dig and trench many a time on my way back and forth covering offices.
