One of Capcom’s classic arcade westerns has found a new home on Commodore hardware, with Gun.Smoke now available for Amiga AGA systems.
The 1985 arcade shooter puts players in control of bounty hunter Billy Bob as he works through a series of Wild West stages filled with enemies, weapon upgrades and boss encounters. The Amiga conversion comes from Modern Vintage Gamer, following the developer’s earlier work bringing other arcade games to Commodore machines.
This is more than a simple graphical recreation. The project involved reverse-engineering the original arcade ROM and rebuilding the game in C, with the Amiga version targeting the AGA chipset and aiming for smooth performance on an Amiga 1200-class machine.
The game retains the distinctive shooting system from the arcade original, where direction and firing are closely tied to the controls. Across ten levels, players can collect different weapons and take on the game’s larger encounters.
The project is another good example of how modern development tools are being used to bring arcade software back to hardware that was never originally designed to run it.
RVG take: For Amiga owners who enjoy arcade conversions, this is a particularly interesting release because the goal is not simply to imitate the original — it is an attempt to make the arcade game feel at home on an AGA Amiga.
