Rearranged the room I have set aside for my retro consoles, CRTs etc. Looks a bit tidier now.  I have an RGB switch (the silver box to the right of the rotated CRT I use for shmups) that connects most of the consoles to that 28" CRT on the left (yeah - that's a really big rubik's cube!).  The flat panel on the right I use with the Japanese Gamecube you see beside it as it accepts s-video and that's the best the JP-GC can do without a mod. It's on an extendable, rotatable arm which is handy for the shmups I have on the JP-GC.

Is a must for a lot of shooting games on 32bit era consoles and later.  :)

compot

That's a pretty neat set-up. But how do you rotate the picture 90 degrees for shooter games on that sideways tv?

davyk

The better games on ps1,saturn,ps2 gc,dreamcast etc have options for playing this way. Its called TATE mode. Pronounce "tah...tay".

Shadowrunner

Huh, here I've been saying it wrong all these years lol. Never knew that's how it was pronounced.

davyk

I was same for a long time. It wasn't until I read a few articles and maybe something at shmups.com that explained the pronounciation. It's to do with the Japanese word for upright or something like that.

Allright, hope you don't mind if I steal your idea and flip one of my TV's sideways too.

Lots of people do it  :)   Just make sure you have the games!

When rotating a CRT, make sure it is powered off and left for 10-15mins. Rotate it. Leave it for 5mins and then away you go. If you rotate a TV while powered up you can get weird bands of colour.  Obviously try and find a TV with a nice flat side. A domestic TV isn't supposed to operate like this so I never leave it unattended while powered up - just to be on the safe side - even though I have been doing it for years with a few different models.

Games I own or have owned that that support it:

PS1 - Namco Museum (quite a few early Namco games are TATE - Pacman for instance and this is an option), Xevious 3D/G+ (the classic Xevious games have TATE modes), Space Invaders 2000 (classic Space Invaders is another TATE game)

Saturn - DoDonPachi, Game Paradise,Layer Section, Kingdom GrandPrix

PS2 - DoDOnPachi Dao Ou Jou, Dragon Blaze, Castle Shikigami 1 & 2, Espgaluda, Homura, Psyvariar, Raiden III, Samurai Aces, Tengai, XII Stag.

Dreamcast - Gunbird2, ( I don't own Under Defeat and Ikaruga but I know they support it)

Gamecube - Castle Shikigami 2, Radirgy Generic, Ikaruga

360 - Mushihmesama Futari, DoDonPachi Resurrection, Muchi Much Pork & Pink Sweets, Under Defeat HD, DoDonPachi SaiDaiOuJou

Steam - Mushihimesama, Raiden III, Raiden IV

Lovely setup m8, much better than mine.

I see you have a few Jap versions of the various consoles!

Own: Jaguar, Lynx, Dreamcast, Saturn, MegaDrive, MegaCD, 32X, GameGear, PS3, PS, PSP, Wii, GameCube, N64, DS, GBA, GBC, GBP, GB,  Xbox, 3DO, CDi,  WonderSwan, WonderSwan Colour NGPC

davyk

Too many!!!

There are 2 JP Saturns on show, the black GC is Japanese and the N64 is a Japanese modded for RGB. I have an unmodded one in storage I should really sell. The silver slim PS2 is Japanese. The rest are PAL though the Megadrive and SNES are modded. I use a boot disc on Dreamcast for thew imports I have for that.
