I found the genre when done correctly to be super satisfying. Much more so than the behind the car racers of the time.

Ok some other good top down racers;
Combat cars, Death rally, double clutch, F1 circus, Ignition, Karnaaj rally, Mashed, Moto roader 2, Thrash rally, racing gears advance.

If your inc isometric games, then powerdrive (jag version others r shit) Neo drift out, Overtop.

Yeah I rented the MD version many years ago.

Indy Heat is available on the MD now too, though very limited cartridge run of complete port that was never released until now.

I already posted Super Cars on the Spectrum but here is a budget clone of it by Mastertronic that I just came across. Bigger sprites and really nice looking actually, reminds me a lot of Double Clutch on the Mega Drive actually.

Another great budget top down racer on the Spectrum, this time from Codemasters. I loved this one when I was a kid and interestingly they also made a light gun version where you had to shoot the sides of the screen to turn!!!  :o
