The Famicom Network System or Famicom Modem as it's also known, is modem accessory for the Famicom that was released in 1988 exclusively for Japan. The Famicom modem allowed its users to use their Famicom to get stock updates, check bank account balances, trade stocks and even bet on horse races. This is the story of how Nomura Securities, Japan's oldest - Financial company and Nintendo teamed up to create Nintendo's first modem.

Looks like the real market would of been for gambling. Interesting to see a financial product driving new tech on a console.
