Is there enough interest here for a monthly high score league?

Will produce the finer details if we can get enough up for it.

For me, it depends whether emulators can be used. Most of my consoles are boxed away so the 'real hardware' rule would kill it for me. Also, which consoles/emus? Amiga and C64 emus have been too complicated for me to set up and use so I still can't enjoy the packs I received in early May. I don't have the real thing.
Sounds like fun either way but I'm also hesitant to sign on since my job is liable to go nuts at the drop of a dime and I won't even be able to post for a week, let alone find time to get good at a game where I'd stand a chance of competing.

Plus, I like to hack in cheats too much. It's an addiction. I blame the Game Genie :-[

I like it ;D

I'd be in but I'm the complete opposite of what Saturn is saying. If I have the system and the real game I'd join for sure but if I don't own the game I would not want to go the emulator route.

If you're open to doing modern games with this, an excellent one we could do is the newly released Pac-Man 256. I've been playing it on the Xbox One but it only costs $5 to download so I'd be willing to grab it on the PS4 as well since a lot more people around here seem to have that console. An advantage to doing it on modern consoles too is that it will keep track of all the scores and everything so setting it up would be very easy.

I'd be interested if you manage to implement something. Its a good idea.
There seems to be a fair amount of visitors to the site but not many regularly post so its difficult to gauge whether it would bring them into the fold. Its nice to think it would.

I'm not a fan of emulation but wouldn't be too bothered if it was only occasional. It would give me an excuse to try an buy some new kit (well, old kit, lol).

I'd be up for the emulation route, afar all its a screenshot of your hi score etc..the likes of the 8-bit range are emulated to 99.9%, St and amiga are more less the same, Snes, MD, PCE,NES,GBA,GB are also pretty much solid, I appreciate those with real hardware wanting to use those, since its the best way to do it and snap a photo afterwards, but unless its' xbox360, xbox or ps4, I'm shit out of luck running games on real hardware.

zapiy

I'd like to work out a way where we can do a bit of both, ideas on that would be welcomed..

I would suggest that we give the member a choice of what way they plan on playing each game.. the league can then be split into

Overall

Emu

Orig Hardware

This will not require any more work from you guys other than letting me know what you intend on doing.. I will then run some special events that will only be either RH or EMU.. These events will be carefully worked out so as to get as much participation as possible.

I take part on my arcade forums yearly high score league, Some people play on original boards and others on Mame setups. Its quite laid back, a screen shot to show the score and dip switch settings usually pulled from Twin Galaxies. People vote each month for the next game and a piece of code picks out the title randomly. It kinda ticks over with 6-10 people playing regularly but some games attract more. The game changes twice-monthly with points going to the top 10 scores and 24 games played in total.

With multiple retro systems maybe you could set up an high score forum, and start by having some specific classic old titles initially to see if it attracts - ie. Jetpack on Spectrum, Donkey Kong on NES, Commando on C64, Rainbow Islands on PS1, Galaga on PCE etc.

I like original hardware but allowing HW/Emulation both makes it fairer and easier to take part, No continues allowed.

On your arcade forum??

Yeah great ideas, If i can get that type of average turnout then this will be worth doing, I want to build in a lets play a game we never have played.. Maybe do a podcast with certain people who join in and get some feedback on the games.. Basically build a bigger idea around the basic high score league.

On your arcade forum??

It was a general "My" rather than an Zapiy "My"  :P

Get that section opened and throw an interesting game in there as a test.

zapiy

Ah ok,

So anymore interested parties????

You thought any more about a format Zapiy?

zapiy

Not yet pal, was thinking something simple and something that people will enjoy doing and not always just getting the highest score.

Yes, I would agree that something casual is the best approach.

My suggestion to stimulate some ideas:
Choose a particular system then people suggest games for it of which one is chosen at random. Play the game for a couple of weeks and chat about it. Maybe include a special feature review or something.

zapiy

That sounds great. I am thinking of perhaps recording a podcast with any member that fancies coming on and discussing that game and so on. Just making more out of it than just a scoring comp.

Another idea would be a Game of the Month format where a particular game is chosen that is purposefully multi format.
Users can then indulge themselves in whichever version they want and discuss the variants (i.e. argue which is best :^])

An example would be R-Type (looking at the graphics at the bottom of the page here). Lots of versions across different platforms. Maybe even include sequels and remakes.
This could extend to reviews and Podcasts too.

*edit: although this is even more removed from the original high score idea...
