I don't have a Neo Geo but I thought this looked pretty awesome and it is still in development.

Looks great, and nice to see a new Neo Geo game, but the price as usual is ridiculous! 400 EUR for a Metal Slug clone? Even if I had the hardware I wouldn't buy it at that price.

zapiy

Wow that's some price. I assume that comes on a MVS cartridge?

Looks and sounds very good, NGDev are great devs, though the only thing i don't like the look of is the 'floaty' main character, they need to add some gravity to him! Imo that makes the game look 'cheap' if you know what i mean like a badly programmed PD game, fix that and wow, pity Neo Geo CD owners never get any ports of these games, i don't mind the 10 minute loading!, once its in ram you were ok!

I have to agree with @AmigaJay, there is no gravity in the main character, characters don't float around and only ever seen this in low budget indie games, and the price tag is pure over the top, SNK themselves wouldn't even charge this price, and I don't the build cost justify it either, plenty of companies doing casings and boards for this type of thing, well I suspect they are.

under close examination it is very clear they've re-skined direct Metal Slug sprites and imagery from the series, brilliantly done though, but a best realistic price would be about $150-180 (€140) dollars to meet collectors expectations for something like this and I see nowhere that this is a serious limited run of this game, nahh too rich for my blood in any stretch of the imagination.

Shadowrunner

That price is for the standard version on MVS, the limited edition with shockbox is 450EUR! I understand why these games were so expensive  back in the day, the memory and other components cost a lot. I also understand why the old games still cost so much on ebay today, supply and demand. However, I have no idea why they charge so much for these new games, other than they can because people will buy them at that price. It's crazy!

And yes, it sucks for CD owners like myself that these never get CD releases, but I would imagine that this game is too big to fit on a CD. That's the reason only the first two Metal Slug games were released on CD, and some of the other later Neo Geo games too. It's funny to think that a cartridge can hold more than a CD, but that's the case when it comes to the Neo Geo.

AmigaJay

No the biggest Metal Slug 3 Neo-Geo game is 708MB, so technically it could fit on a CD, i just think at the time sales were drying so they ended porting games to the format.
But it doesn't explain why homebrew games do the same, Last Hope was ported to the NGCD, though i know a couple of games back in the day had slightly smaller sprites than the AES version, but i thought that was just down to reducing the loading times to a minimum.

Either way its annoying that all we get is Frogfeast and couple of demos!

Pre-orders for the AES Collectors Edition of this went up today, 98 copies at €550 and they sold out in less than an hour! As a new AES owner I thought about it for a second, and then said screw that! The regular AES version is supposed to go up for pre-order in a couple months time, so I'll wait and see how much it is and see how rich I'm feeling then :64:

TrekMD

Sounds like quite the bargain...not!

Neo-Geo Game Programming seems to be the fastest way to make Money ehh? 98 copies @ €550 totals €53,900 :13:

we are in the wrong business guys..lol

AmigaJay

lol yeah!

Good news about NGDevs wanting to work on the new Retro Games Console, i imagine if they use the Neo Geo core then we could possibly have all the homebrew back catalogue for £40-£50 a pop on cartridge which sounds very tempting if this could turn out true!

Dam, your right, could end up been a great business for these guys and others, but it still remains what the logistics on cost, marketing, distribution, copyrights and many other things yet to be revealed regarding the Retro VGS machine.

I'm sure they've been in contact with many devs regarding this, but remember, I don't think these guys will want to be completely tied in to contracts regarding their IP's and such. remember if this flops on it's arse, could cost devs dearly.

@ReadRetro and his team certainly seem to be doing some great work and what great news that would be..
