Amazon are running a Greatest Console Ever competition and tournament, where you get the chance to vote for your favourites for a chance to win all current-gen consoles.

Mega Drive for the ultimate winner.

If the PS1 doesn't win, I riot. :P

(I'll accept the Genesis/Mega Drive winning, though. It's pretty high up on my list, too.)

Shadowrunner

That's a tough one! I've always had a thing for the underdog so my personal favourites (3DO, Jaguar, Neo Geo) aren't even on the list  :( Out of the ones you can choose though, I'd have to go with the Genesis/MD.

TrekMD

Given the selection, the Genesis/MD gets my vote.

Not on my phone so a bit more info.....

Genesis/MD may have some the best games, and be considered a trailblazer in terms of Sega attempting new things with it (CD/32x), but I cant help but feel it doesnt quite hit the heights.

PS2 I think nailed a generation stone dead and certainly for much of its life the Dreamcast/Xbox/Gamecube couldnt touch its success. It crossed over a number of markets by doing what previous consoles had failed to do (inc the MegaCD) in that the DVD playback made it more than just a console.

What pushes the PS2 ahead for me though is its success, not in terms of sales but that it was successful everywhere. The MegaDrive arguably was only a contender outside of Japan, and had to compete fiercely with its rivals just to be succesful.

PS2 seemed to steamroller over allcomers and had more revisions of its design, a longer life and perhaps (gasp!) a greater influence on how consoles are now regarded?

Bring it fanboys  :113: :8:

Good thing Laird is now "Gone", he would not like your answer Wiggy  :24:
Actually looking around, most of the PS2 haters aren't here anymore so you're probably pretty safe with that answer. I can't argue with anything you said, but shouldn't the consoles game library be a factor in why you think it's the best ?

TrekMD

The PS2 was good console, based on its longevity and game library.  I never owned one, so I can't really say much about it, though.  Weren't they still released PS2 games even just after release of the PS3?

Actually the last PS2 game ever made just came out late last year, PES2014. That gives the PS2 a lifespan of 12 years, pretty impressive!

That is impressive for sure.  Speaks to what the console means to people.  :)

Absolutely and I'll stand by the PS2 having a library as strong as the MD, ignore the shovelware that plagued it throughout its life (as the most succesful console of its era its inevitable its got the bandagon jumpers) but its has many excellent and dare I say it bona-fide gaming classics. Certainly as many as the MD?

Ive got another reason for PS2 over the MD >

Backwards Compatability - Both consoles are compatable with their predecessors but only the PS2 did this without an adaptor.

Bobinator

The PS2 is pretty great, too. It did pretty much everything the PS1 did well, if not better. You had tons of options for multiplayer gaming, some of which even worked online, an amazing selection of games that covered more or less anything you could possibly want to play... backwards compatibility with the PS1... it may well be my favorite console ever, next to the PS1.

TrekMD

I think the PS2 could be considered the Atari 2600 of its time.  Longevity and a game library that is huge but has its fair share of clunkers.

Spot on, its almost the perfect console I'd say.
