This just occured to me having seen the post about Protector resurgence.

Every forum, from time to time, sends out a newsletter. I was wondering, and I don't mean to burden anyone, but is it possible to create groups. That is Nintendo, Saga, Neo Geo etc and send, as and when there is something new, an update/brief newsletter to that specific group? This way, even if one hasn't been on the board for a while, an update would appear in their inbox which, in turn, would encourage them to get back on the site for further discussion.

Just an idea :)

We do send a newsletter out but not with a set frequency.

Thats not quite what I meant. I was talking about groups that members can join acording to there interests and that group would update them on specific news as it breaks. The main forum newsletter the more generalised, as it needs to be.

That's actually a great idea. There might be something that we can use for that. Leave it with me. No promises though.

Own: Jaguar, Lynx, Dreamcast, Saturn, MegaDrive, MegaCD, 32X, GameGear, PS3, PS, PSP, Wii, GameCube, N64, DS, GBA, GBC, GBP, GB,  Xbox, 3DO, CDi,  WonderSwan, WonderSwan Colour NGPC

Yeah, that can also work. I just recall from when I ran my own forum the mass email could be sent to specific members or groups of members but that method is probably far better, nice.

Look at this, not fully implamented yet..
Bang on! Now does anyone specifically use those groups to update subscribers of news eg homebrews, real news, upcoming events etc?

That's what I need to look at. From what I understand you can set them up so they will send emails out.

Great, you see my thinking is that any forum is always awkward to navigate (look how many times does someone say they missed a topic) though the more you visit the easier it is to stay on top of interesting topics. However, this may be a way of targeting specific information to members of that group. We are all interested in other systems but we also have our favourites and this way we'd never miss important announcements or the gooky stuff.

Further, the main newsletter you send to all members could then be more generalise but also inform members of the big issues and events. I think you follow my train of thought and I would be very happy to contribute where I can.
