Same Name, Different Game

Quote from: "Shadowrunner"I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I love Strider on the NES  :113:
I can understand how people would be turned off if they were expecting the arcade game, but as it's own stand-alone game it's an absolute classic!

Well, the game is exactly what Nintendo wanted it to be:  it's own unique version for the NES.

The Master System and PC Engine versions of Strider are different too. As for the MD and NES versions, there really is no contest - the MD version is superior in every single way.

Fixed that for you  :3:

But seriously, I'm not sure how you really compare the two games anyway. Obviously a 16 bit game is going to have much more impressive graphics and sound than an 8 bit game, and other than the same name and lead character they really have very little in common.

TL

Yeah exactly!

And seen as I wrote it, it was obviously my opinion :3:

The Mega Drive version did have some issues of its own, but the better execution and nicer visuals are what most people remember about the game anyway.  The NES version would've benefited from a tweaked engine; the spotty hit detection just makes it a very inconsistent game.  I like that they tried to introduce more platforming elements, and even allowed you to control your jumps in midair.  But everything that Strider NES tries to do, Ninja Gaiden does it better.

Here's something I think everyone can agree on: the PC DOS game called Mega Man is an absolute abomination which bears no relation to the game it's named after.  As a young Mega Man enthusiast in the early '90s, I'm pretty sure I was sucked into the marketing hype, but even back then I knew something didn't quite match up.  See for yourselves.

By the way, how do I attach YouTube videos to my posts?

I fixed that for you.  All you have to do is copy and paste the address directly (no need to add HTML) but remove the "s" from https so the video embeds.

So, the DOS version isn't very Mega after all?  ;)

No, there's nothing "mega" about the DOS game. ;)

Here's another one that tends to divide opinion: Shadowrun for the Mega Drive/Genesis and Super Nintendo.  The games are based on the same universe, but everything else is different, from the characters to the gameplay and visual style.  Despite that, both games represent the grittiness of the Shadowrun universe pretty well.  I'll be submitting a review of the SNES version pretty soon.

StarFox on the 2600 is the superior game, of course!  :24:  Talk about a perfect example of same name, different game!

Shinobi is a good one, there are a number of completely different games based around this franchise, all of them are absolute crackers too!

TrekMD

It's too bad that Shinobi was not directly ported to the Genesis/MD.  It would have been a great game for the console.

I have always thought this too, it's actually quite strange that Sega ignored many of their own coin-ops when making games for the Mega Drive.

There are "sequels" to the original for the console, though.  I'm not sure how good they are.

All 3 Mega Drive Shinobi games are absolutely superb. Shinobi 3 is actually my favourite Shinobi game, my brother disagrees however and thinks it is Shadow Dancer. You really can't go wrong with any of them though. The SMS conversion of the original game is also very good.

Good to know.  Something to check out.
