changes I would've made if I was in charge of the SNES

- expand oam from 544 to 1024 bytes, to include flexible sprite sizes and a larger pool of pattern tables.
- add another bank of vram for rotating/scaling sprites.
- use packed pixel format instead of planar.
- add a 320x224 mode.
- fix the 5a22's bus timing so it can run faster on slower memory.
- use a better math coprocessor that can do 16bit signed multiply and division.

cost cutting changes:
- get rid of mosiac and window effects.
- remove highres modes and 8bpp modes.
- reduce the amount of wram to 64kb or 32kb.
- replace the spc700 with the cheaper Ricoh PCM chip.

Snes did just fine, and was a good machine anyway. Luckily those experts who designed the machine managed to squeak by without your expertise.

...but it's still fun to speculate how an even better SNES would've been like.  Or how a Sega Genesis with more colors would've been like.

SnakeEyes

Thats fine, but those technical figures you posted means nothing to most people and they have no idea how it would have affected anything.

Here's what these things do in layman terms.

- Makes system easier to program, and allows for improved sprite animation.
- Allows sprites to be individually scaled and rotated, instead of only a background layer.
- Makes it better at 3d graphics.
- Allows slightly more horizontal detail, and more fluid horizontal movement.
- Less slowdown, and smoother sprite animation.
- Makes it easier to program.

- Remove some cheesy special effects.
- Remove modes that are mainly just for static screens.
- Remove unnecessary main memory.
- Replace the sound chip with a similar but cheaper off-the-shelves chip.

changes I would've made if I was in charge of the SNES:

Remove the 2nd controller port as it was not needed
Remove the 1st controller port as the removal of the second was universally successfully
Added 2 controller ports as it didnt have any

Sorry, been boozing  :111:

The biggest changes I would have made would have been to remove the terrible slow CPU and replace it with a Motorola 68000, remove the bottleneck 8-bit bus and give it a 16-bit bus instead like it should have and lastly upgrade the graphics chip to be able to scale and rotate sprites, not just background layers.

If those simple things had been done it would have been a Neo Geo killer.

Slightly more sober lol

I'd actually disagree with the use of the 68000, in my mind having a different chip than the existing MegaDrive or later the Jaguar means its more likely to get different games for the different systems?

Aaendi

Wasn't the cost of the 68000 the reason they got rid of it?

No, they chose the 65C816 and an 8-bit bus for backwards compatibility with the NES. But then they decided to remove this feature, thus making the choice seem very foolish and they were left with a slow CPU on a crippled bus.

Nothing needed to be changed, anyone who didn't own back in the day didn't care of give a crap about technical components that were better or poorer, it was always about the games, so great some complete crap, but I have one from 1990 the Super Famicom till the SNES arrived in 1991 in Europe and found that this machine was able to deliver arcade quality games into the home. And couldn't care less of technical improvements good or bad..

The Snes was a work of 16-bit genius for the time, and likes the mega drive delivered on all levels to feed our gaming needs and requirements, the battle between both companies served us gamer greatly, the more they pushed , the better the games were to out do the other, so isn't this what it was all about? The games?, not the carriage that delivered them in my opinion.

So no, there is nothing that needs added or removed or enchanted , The Super Nintendo console was perfect.

As a non tech retro gamer( I am a tech head) I do t think much needed changing. From my point of view as an original owner it played all the games I wanted very well and I guess that's all that matters to me.

Okay fine.  Use a 68000 like everyone else, and not let any other CPU see the light of day.
