Planet Virtual Boy member Thunderstruck has brought us a demo of his new homebrew game Mario Combat. It is a first person Mario shooting game that evolved out of a tech-demo he used for testing stuff out. It uses elements from both Doom and Mario Safari to great effect.

He spent a month or so on building a supporting tool first, which is basically a tool that allows him to convert images, define sprites, build animations, create levels and objects and assign actions to those objects (like moving/jump something around, flicker, trigger an animation and so on). Actions can trigger other actions so you can build a lot of stuff just buy using the tool and not coding. After finishing the core part of the tool he wrote the game part of the demo from the scratch to have a clean start. That took about 2 weeks.

At the moment he is not planning to release this as a full game but if enough people request it then he might have a re-think. If you want to put in a request or read more about this title's development then you can go and read the thread over at Planet Virtual Boy forum. The demo has been released for free to play on real hardware, via a flash cartridge, or on an emulator. You can also watch a video of the game in action below!

It's great to see homebrews coming out for some of the less common systems.  It's only been a few years now that there's been really good emulation of the VB, and now we're starting to see some decent new homebrews coming out.
