I was looking at my Saturn the other day and got to thinking what was the cartridge slot actually used for?  So i set about doing some research and it was used to my suprise for many different things so this thread is about those accessories.

So the most common use appears to be the Backup memory cartridge.

Another cartridge is the Extended Ram Cart.

The Sega Net Link, i believe this was US and Jap only.

Do you know of any other uses for this slot?

Own: Jaguar, Lynx, Dreamcast, Saturn, MegaDrive, MegaCD, 32X, GameGear, PS3, PS, PSP, Wii, GameCube, N64, DS, GBA, GBC, GBP, GB,  Xbox, 3DO, CDi,  WonderSwan, WonderSwan Colour NGPC

That's pretty neat.  So, it can have more than one use depending on what cart is used.

Going to the final frontier, gaming...

There were many potential uses mentioned by Sega about the cartridge slot.  The ones that we know about include the memory cart for game saves, Netlink and expansion cart for titles like Street Fighter vs X-Men and other select titles.

I am trying to find my mags from the time that the Saturn was announced up to release to see if I can find other options that Sega mentioned.  There were at least five of them, if I remember correctly.  We know about three.

This is what mine is used for:

Works as a RAM cartridge for the SNK games, has back-up save space and best of all it allows you to play import games!  :111:

Variation on a theme, but I have this one resident in that slot

I have the one with the comms card. Have a couple of official memory cards. Also have an ST-Key kicking around which is a region check defeat cart only (rumour has it the PCB is too thick and damages the slot - so I don't use it.

Also have an official 4mb cart for the capcom versus games - use that in my JPN console for those.
