Can you remember the name of this game?

I remember playing this multi-directional scrolling shoot-em-up back in the arcades in the 80's where you controlled a fighter that would shoot at asteroids which spit out some kind of 'bomb' after destroying them.  You would pick up these bombs and at the end of the level a very large 'meanie' would appear (it was star-shaped with an evil-looking face in the middle) and try to kill you.  You would fire the bombs that you'd previously 'mined' and destroy parts of this 'meanie'.  You'd have to repeat the mining of the bombs firing them at the meanie until it was completely destroyed - at which point the level would be complete.

I'm sure there's a lot more to the gameplay than that but that's all I remember about it - but I can't for the life of me remember the name of the game.  I'd love to find this on some kind of emulator.

Any help finding out what this is?

Many thanks,

Sunomo.

Sinistar Unleashed Final Boss (the original Sinistar)

Sinistar Unleashed, for clarification.

Well, there IS this... I have to admit, if this worked on modern versions of Windows, I'd totally play this. Seems like the kind of game you want a flightstick for, and I'm lucky enough to have one.

...I don't get why Sinistar sounds like a cartoon pirate, though.

Looks like a cool game.  I have no idea what it is called, though.

Going to the final frontier, gaming...

It looks amazing. Not a game I have ever played before.
