Quote from: "The Laird"You are right, Sonic probably is the obvious answer to that.

But just to throw a curve ball I think it's worth putting forward this stunning game . . . .

Master System Longplay [010] Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse

Good shout, especially as the MD version ranks as one of my top ten platform games. I jut think Sonic is a better comparison, especially as comparing Castle of illusion to either Chip and dale or Ducktales would be a better head to head as they all bear the Disney license.

Quote from: "FinMK"Then there are the Adventure Island series on NES

The original Adventure Island is the same game as Wonderboy and the SMS version is much better.

I like Adventure island, but Wonderboy on the MS is a far better game.

Well, just completed Sonic Chaos on the Master System, it took 37 minutes, including watching the intro.

I ended up with 23 spares lives and 7 continues.

Now there is no 2 ways about it, i am a total Sonic fanboy, but Mario 3 has so much more depth and so many more interesting and varied levels its hard not to give it to Mario....will hang on a couple of days though.

TL

I absolutely loath platformers and hate Super Mario games with a passion so my answer is pretty predictable  :21:

Crusto

The brilliance of Mario 3 aside, I dont think this round is as clear cut as some may think. Wonder boy 3 is well, wonderful lol. As are its 2 predecessors, then Sonic, Mickey Mouse, Alex Kidd, Kung Fu Kid etc. The Master system was very strong in this area.

Tough one to call.

Both machines are strong in this area. you mentioned some great games for the MS, and the NES also has Chip n dale 1 + 2, super mario bros, Kirby, Ducktales 1 + 2. Tiny toons, kid icarus, Bubble bobbl and Rainbow islands.

As for the MS, I have a lot of love for Psych fox

TL

Master System has an even better version of Bubble Bobble and a superior version of New Zealand Story too.

Great shout on Psycho Fox, very good game.

So, one on one, who are we going to champion for the SMS & NES?

I think it has to be Super Mario 3 for the NES.

PS after this genre i'll be doing an updated on the results so far and opening the floor to others to pick a genre.

Lets make this interesting then - have it as a best of three, seen as all these games were mentioned:

Castle Of Illusion (SMS) Vs. Duck Tales (NES)

Wonder Boy (SMS)  Vs. Adventure Island (NES)

Sonic 2 (SMS) Vs. Mario 3 (NES)

Master System Longplay [044] Sonic the Hedgehog 2[/align:1y5b5uxr]

SnakeEyes

2-1 in favour of the NES

Mario 3 > Sonic
Adventure island < Wonderboy
Ducktales > Castle of illusion ( Nearly went for COI but I was letting my love for the MD version cloud my judgement. looking at then seperate I think Ducktales is better than the SMS version of castle of illusion )

TL

Sega Master System wins 3-0 for me!:

Castle Of Illusion (SMS) Vs. Duck Tales (NES)

Wonder Boy (SMS)  Vs. Adventure Island (NES)

Sonic 2 (SMS) Vs. Mario 3 (NES)[/align:3b18tefa]

Fin

I can't call this one to be honest. I want the NES to take it but there are so many arguments against. SO i have opened a poll on the thread (at the top) place your votes! Additional comments are welcome. (Poll is open for 5 days)

Fin

As much as its upsets me to say, the SMS takes the best platformer by 4 votes to 3

Quick recap so far:
