Our friends over at Gameroom Junkies are some serious classic arcade and pinball fans. So serious, that they've got one of the best podcasts you'll find on iTunes about collecting, restoring and playing arcade games and pins. Co-host Preston, who lives in Atlanta, was kind enough to share his thoughts on 7 Classic Arcade Games You Can't Play (Easily) On MAME. Preston would know, since he plays arcade games every chance he gets. Be sure to Like Gameroom Junkies on Facebook, follow them on Twitter, and download their podcast. We're big fans of it! Check out Preston's article on 7 Classic Arcade Games You Can't Play (Easily) On MAME.

Whether due to limited space, availability, or financial resources, not everyone can have their own game rooms filled with classic arcade games. For the rest of us, there's MAME. Yes, MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator), has been satisfying the nostalgia of a generation for years though stand-alone PC's or integrated into an upright arcade cabinet. The benefit of MAME is, of course, that you can play literally thousands of games all-in-one compact unit. You may be surprised to find, however, that not all the classic games you remember from the '80s can be easily replicated through MAME. Unless you want to have a control panel comparable to the wingspan of a 747, there are several classic games you will just have to wait to play until you can find the real thing.

I see the Tron arcade game listed there.  They are so right!  That is one game I'd love to see properly ported to a home system as well but it would need a special controller!

I would think games that used spinner knobs like Tempest or Arkanoid should be on that list as well. But, then it wouldn't be '7 games', would it?

You cant play invaders revenge really either -cos the sound doesnt work (though im sure theres a few like that :( )

You definitely can't play Road Riot 4WD properly on MAME sadly, you can't emulate the controller really and nothing can match the cabinet that jolts you in the back when you hit stuff, bloody awesome game. The more I think about it it's probably my dream arcade cab.

Cant you connect a wheel to mame ? Looks like it handles lots of analog stuff.

Not the same as the one in Road Riot with its force feedback, jolting chair and roll cage round you. Just awesome.

No this is true - but as close as playing pinball on a computer :) )

Any light gun shooter. Lethal Enforcers, Jurassic Park, Duck Hunt, Time Crisis, etc. Guns just don't work with computer monitors.

I feel that Robotron should've been on the list too. It feels much more natural with the two joysticks it was designed for - than trying to control it using 8 keys. Perhaps the list should've been a more traditional "top 10". ;)

The 5200 port lets you play with both joysticks, making it much more like the arcade version.  This is the setup...

Very true!  I completely forgot about that other setup!

Awesome plug for an amazing system. Robotron and Space Dungeon with the controller coupler are reasons alone for owning the 5200. Laird's pictures of the XE dual controller setup were eye opening, as I never knew about that. I have to say, though, that 5200's non-centering sticks work very well with dual controller games.

I have Tron on the Xbox 360. Plays very well. Bought it and Frogger  at the same time. Really wanted TimePilot but chose Frogger. What a disappointment. I digress! The 360 controller is ideal. Anyone ever try Tron on the PS III?

I love Q*Bert and Spy Hunter on MAME. Not sure why they seem unplayable! The older versions seem more adapted for playing. Turn the joystick 45 degrees for Q*Bert. I do the same thing playing the DreamCast version.
