Ecco was never meant to be a game though, was it? just a tech demo.by Sega to 'showcase' the 32X Cinepak technology after all the flak the MCD had (rightly) taken for grainy FMV.

Great thread... something really fasinating about "unreleased" games... especially for DCRP - Star Fox 2 :)

I dunno, Nintendo wasn't really doing a lot of porting during the SNES days, except maybe Super Mario All-Stars. Sega, on the other hand, were porting Space Harrier and Afterburner to everything like they were going out of style. (There's a joke there, but I won't make it.)

But...those were arcade conversions, so concept being you loved the game at arcade wanted a version on home computer/console etc and 32X was 1st home hardware to really have the grunt to replicate Sega's coin-op hardware.

I grant you they were not showcase 32X games and personally feel Sega would have been far better releasing a sort of sega Ages compilation of these 2 and more on MCD/Sega CD than stand alone carts..

Plus how many formats had Capcom put Streetfighter 2 out on or others with things like Bubble Bobble/Rainbow Islands, New Zealand Story etc etc?

It was pretty much common practice that arcade conversions turned up on almost every gaming device known to man

I'd agree that the following Nintendo-published SNES games could be seen by some as being rehashes though,

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!
Ken Griffey Jr.'s Winning Run
Kirby's Avalanche
Kirby's Dream Land 3
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Metal Combat: Falcon's Revenge
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Super International Cricket
Super Mario All-Stars
Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World
Super Mario World
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Super Metroid
Super Play Action Football
Super Punch-Out!!
Tetris 2
Tetris Attack
Tetris & Dr. Mario
Vegas Stakes

Plus,

Arkanoid: Doh It Again
Killer Instinct
Space Invaders

... if you're insistent on including arcade coin-op conversions.

Thing is, it was'nt Sega that was 'porting' the games to non-Sega systems, was it? think Sunsoft handled the NES versions of Afterburner 2 and Alien Syndrome for example.

I'd guess sega in reality did little more than:Capcom, Atari, Taito,SNK, Konami etc did.Sign up licensing deals for conversions to be done for numerous formats.Posted on here before how Capcom, by signing up deal with US Gold's new GO label, had managed to ineffect, p*ss off it's own coding teams, so Sega's coin-op's appearing on as many formats as possible just done as good buisness sense.

By licensing your coin-op rights out to conversion, surely you (being Sega) had revenue coming in, yet did'nt have your marketing or coding teams tied up, converting games to very different systems and you tapped into a combined massive user-base.Sounds like good buisness sense to myself.

We're all gamers here, likes+dislikes, pretty much all companies have at 1 time or another had our money i'm sure.

Regarding conversions of the original Space Harrier:

Sega responsible for:Master System, Game Gear, 32X, Saturn, PS2, GBA and Dreamcast (Shen Mue) conversions....

Elite handled Amiga, ST, Amstrad CPC, C64 and Zx Spectrum versions and planned to do C16, BBc Micro+Electron versions.

Mindscape handled the C64/ST+Amiga versions in North America as well as the PC version.

In terms of Japan:

Dempa handled the Fujistsu FM77, NEC-PC-6001, NEC PC 8801, Sharp M2, Sharp X1+Sharp X6800

NEC did the PC Eng/TurboGrafx-16 versions

Takara the NES version

And then we had Chris Hutt doing the stunning A8 homebrew game.

I cannot think of a single arcade game to have as many conversions off top of my head, involving so many different teams and could have had a further 3, if Elite had done all the 8 Bit versions it wanted.

Space Harrier was awesome, my only moan at sega would be no home conversions of Planet Harriers...to this day!.
