Many of us here have strong Jaguar bias so you are fine  :21:

I'm usually not too keen on consoles being named after something else, which is why the Mega Drive & Master System are my top two.

"It's like a drive, but mega"
"What drive?"
"Who cares? It's MEGA!"

That's how all console naming processes should be.

If the name hadn't been changed, the Ultra 64 would have been one of my favourites. Super Nintendo didn't make the cut though as Super just isn't as cool.

Sega should have named their next console after the Mega Drive the Hyper Drive.

Crusto

Nope, the gigadrive would have been better :3:

And they'd followed that up with the Teradrive no doubt.:-)

AmigaJay

Yeah, certainly looked better than Amstrads attempt!

For the record, Alien verses Predator on the Atari Jaguar holds a Guinness World Record!

All the Atari cats get my attention but I also do like TurboGrafx.  It just sounds cool.

Going to the final frontier, gaming...

When you think about it and put all the feeling aside. I'd say the best names for a game console are :
  • Playstation: because it is really the purpose of a game console, isn't it ?
  • Dreamcast: amazing name full of promises but also wonders ; Soul Calibur and Sonic Adventure were just amazing when they came out.

Do you see the contradiction there lol
I agree, "Playstation" is a good name and I think "Dreamcast" is even better and appeals to fishermen :34: I think the Panther and Jaguar do just that  :113:

The three best named consoles:

Dreamcast - works in numerous different ways, evokes magical qualities that was backed up by its myriad innovations
Genesis - implies 'gaming starts here' without the Sony-esque crassness
Nomad - it works for a portable console & has slightly dark overtones in keeping with Sega's then edgy image

The three worst named consoles:

PlayStation - what the Soviet Union could have come up with, utilitarian and bland, Fisher Price overtones too
Gamate - no comment necessary! (narrowly beat Virtual Boy for much the same reason!)
Nintendo 64 - Atari were slaughtered for pushing the 64-bit-ness of Jag' only for Ninty to come up with this dull name

Interesting post DreamcastRIP and that is a very good argument for the Dreamcast, best I've read :)

Thanks, Cryptic33! I wasn't particularly happy with how I worded it so I'll gladly take the compliment!

You're welcome. It is very interesting to see how enthusiastic people are about their experiences and clearly, you love your SAGA machines as much as I love Atari 8)

CD-I was also a good name (even if it is a standard more than a machine. With the will and need to create more interactivity. The name was a perfect match.

I'd like to think that it was coincidence my top three console names were all from Sega, i.e. not because of any inherent bias I may have toward the company. The fourth on my list would have been one from,

* Lynx - cool and sophisticated name, evokes image of cat-like speed which was appropriate given that it took 12 years for a higher spec' dedicated handheld to appear, smart because the Lynx links to other Lynx consoles

* Intellivision - implies it's the console of choice for prospective members of MENSA!

* Vectrex - love the sound of that name, communicates it's about vector graphics in a cool way

* Bally Astrocade - sounds futuristic and evokes imagery of spaceships so that's gotta be cool!

Other candidates for worst console name would have been:

* Nintendo Entertainment System - sounds like a midi hi-fi or a karaoke machine
* Super Nintendo Entertainment System - 'super' sounds so naff plus it wasn't b/c with NES thus rendering it futile
* Xbox One - not retro of course but it's the third Xbox for heaven's sake!
* TurboGrafx - so cheesy in an '80s Americana way
* WonderSwan - say no more!
* Game & Watch - like having a digital clock was worth mentioning!
