Many years ago I picked up a Playstaion for £5 in a car boot, It had different breakouts to my existing PS1, upon investigation, it turns out that this was an 'audiofile' model.

The mark 1 hardware was meant to be over spec and as a result the audio quality was supposedly better than expensive systems of the day.

In these days of MP3 etc, I am not sure how sought after these are, but if you see one ewith the RCA outs on it, I would pick it up.

there are comparison videos on you tube between 1xxxx and 9xxxxx I can't tell the difference TBH!

I have one of those. My debug PS1 also has RCA outputs. I've never actually done a comparison between either of them and one of my normal PS1's though.

I know that CD playback from the early 'audiophile' PS1s is technically better than most audio equipment, but I don't think you'd notice much of a difference if you're only listening through TV or PC speakers. You'd need to listen through a quality audio receiver, but even then deciding which variation of playback sounds better is pretty subjective...

Funny this should come up. I have a JP launch PS1 which has S-Video as well as all of the other posts on the back of that machine above. Someone just the other day mentioned to me about the superior audio quality of the machine and frankly it wouldn't surprise me.
The Mega Drive 2 was notably inferior to the MD1 and companies always look to decrease costs when manufacturing.

I never knew about the audio difference. I just wanted one for the parallel I/O port.
