I bought an N64 a while ago, complete impulse buy! I saw it on ebay and it was ending soon and really cheap, so I put a bid in and I won. I then picked up a big lot of loose carts for the system, and today I tried some of them. I have to say I'm really impressed at how well these games have aged. I've only played a couple N64 games before so this is a new experience for me, and I'm having a lot of fun!  Played Hexen 64, Starfox 64, DK64, Star Wars Shadow of the Empire, and Glover. More tomorrow :113:

You should try and find a copy of Conker's Bad Fur Day and Paper Mario. They're really worth the price and definitely classics of the N64.

Well for me in between jobs and doing books, I've been managing to play some obscure Atari ST games than never made across to the Amiga, it had its own far share of titles some of which are fantastic and with not playing them before is a real treat,

If any of you have interest in gaming on the Atari ST,

Give these a try

Alien Thing
No Buddies Land
Phoenix

Some great stuff there from an Alien Breed clone to a frantic Star Glider shooter.

Doom 64! I've wanted to play this for years but didn't have the console and could never get it to work on an emulator. Now that I have a N64 I picked it up and tried it out.

After I closed every curtain and blind in the house, turned off every light, maxed out the brightness setting on my TV, and turned the brightness all the way up in the game settings, I could actually see the game!! They nailed the atmosphere but I think they went a little overboard! Looks great though and perfect Doom gameplay :113:

In the process of playing through Swords & Serpents on the NES, loving the cartography element, but damn that game is hard.

Bought a couple Playstation games last night, so playing through Doom & GTA 2 at the moment.

Been a while since I posted in this thread, so a little catchup...

In January, I played some Whoa Dave! (Vita), which isn't a retro game, but looks like one and feels like one. I did mention it at the time, but it's well worth picking up. I also played a bit more Duke Nukem 3D (Vita) but have yet to finish it. One day... Another not retro retro game from January was Rock Boshers DX (Vita), which has lovely Speccy graphics (and this week got an update to give optional NES-ish graphics too). Then there was Steamworld Dig (Wii U), also not retro, but definitely in that vein.

In February, I finished off Rock Boshers and and worked through Shovel Knight (Wii U). Again, not retro but it is definitely trying to be. Fans of Mega Man and Duck Tales really need to play it. After that, was Another World 20th Anniversary (Wii U). Never completed it back in the day, but managed to this time. Restart points seem more frequent, which is helpful!

Then, one of the best games I've played this year, 3D Fantasy Zone (3DS). Was not a fan of the original, but I OWNED this port. M2 have done some staggering work on these 3D 3DS ports, by the way. If you have a 3DS most of them are well worth picking up. Compled 3D Afterburner II (3DS) too. Had a two-player run through the Teenage Mutant Ninja|Hero Turtles arcade game (360) which was fun, but one life per credit (and can't be changed?!) was a bit of a pain.

March saw me playing a bit (a lot) of GBC game Shantae (3DS), which is difficult, has lots of painful backtracking, but is lovely. Oh so lovely. Not yet finished, but I'm 75% there, I think. Another M2 special - 3D Out Run (3DS) took up a lot of March. The 3D is STAGGERING. Since they were on offer, I got 3D Shinobi III (3DS) which was awesome, and it turns out I'd not played it before (I thought I had!) and 3D Altered Beast (3DS) for the LOLs. No LOLs were had. It's not even a port of the arcade version! Boo. Still, it was a pound or something.

Mighty Switch Force 2 (3DS) is another not retro but could be title I completed in March. It's excellent, but then so is most of Wayforward's output, so not really a surprise. At the end of March I finally finished off the nigh-on-impossible but utterly superb Castlevania: Spectral Interlude (Speccy) which was all kinds of woo and yay.

April so far has seen me complete Mighty Gunvolt (3DS), an 8-bit style variant of the already retro-ish Keiji Inafune (Mega Man!) project Azure Striker Gunvolt (which it comes free with). It's bloody great, but a bit short. Feels really like Mega Man too. Also completed the retro-looking Box Boy! (3DS) platform puzzler, and started on the very Mega Man X/Zero Azure Striker Gunvolt (3DS). I've also been working through Super Mario 64 (Wii U) as that appeared on the Virtual Console last week.

And all this around the not even slightly retro games of Assassin's Creed Rogue (360), Lego Batman 3 (Wii U) (which does have a lot of 60s Batman TV series references, so is actually vaguely retro!), Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious (360) (fuhtwopuffandff), Touch My Katamari (Vita), Yakuza 4 (PS3), Pokemon Shuffle (3DS), The Swapper (Vita), Proteus (Vita), Kick & Fennick (Vita), Papo & Yo (PS3), Mario Golf World Tour (3DS), Weapon Shop de Omasse (3DS),  Picross e5 (3DS), Super Smash Bros U (Wii U) and various others for not much time each.

Oh yes - and some crap games submitted to the CSSCGC 2015. You can see them here: http://www.sqij.co.uk/csscgc2015/

Phew eh?

You've been busy deKay! Definitely agree with the Sega 3D games on the 3DS, they did a great job with them and they look awesome :113:

Just recently played Doom 64. Is it me or has the game become harder as I have grown older?  :40:

I've been playing it a bit lately too, and I'm finding it hard just to see! It's a great version of Doom but it's too dark!

I definitely agree. I could not see a thing. Loved the game back in the day but I wonder how I played the game with it being so dark.

I was in two minds as to wether what im currently playing can be classed as retro but thought what the hell. Dodonpachi resurrection on xbox360 and outrun 2,which isnt retro per se but feels old school. And i know this sounds insane but im finding that on normal settings Dodonpachi resurrection feels easier than dodnpachi on saturn.
Anyhow i know there is debate as to what constitues a retro game as old school games(especially bullet hell shooters) are a refined throwback to those long gone(in the west at least) days when you could watch mesmerised as someone tried to 1cc the bastard of a shooter that seemed impossible.

We do have a thread where you can post about modern games you have played also, should you want to do so:  What modern games have you played today?

Going to the final frontier, gaming...
