Quote from: "nakamura"They sure are. Laird just needs a bit of work to forget the politics of gaming and just enjoy the games. I've been working on that for about a year!

There are very few games I enjoy the N64 and those are do are ruined by the controller.

There is more than enough Nintendo love in my life with my Wii  :3:

from my time as an N64 owner-Controller was ok once you got used to it, for things like:

Quake, Turok 2, Doom, Starfox, Blast Corps, Body Harvest, Banjo-K, Jet force Gem, Mario 64, but put it with something like Command and Conquer on N64 and you've an unplayable game.

I've a love/hate realationship with Nintendo hardware, nothing political, just in cases of systems i own like:GB+GBA, the screen issues render games unplayable (so i've always played the GBA stuff on the Micro and/or the GB Player for GC).

The SNES? whilst a technically better piece of hardware in areas of colours+sound than the MD, i've never felt was the leap it was proclaimed to be, been more than enough examples of MD clever programming replicating Mode 7 etc and SNES Mode 7 was'nt really all that, SNES games that really made use of it seemed to need an extra DSP to really pull it off and the MCD did scrolling in 2-Axis rather than SNES Mode 7's single axis (plus MCD enabled texture mapping), so whilst the MD had a fair crop of add-ons to prolong it's shelf life in terms of MCD, then 32X, SNES seemed to rely on DSP chips in carts to compensate for slow CPU, even before Argonaught looked at the SFX chip for 3D.

But no, as an N64 owner, i really enjoyed Goldeneye (once my eyes adjusted), Quake, Perfect dark, took me a while to get into Starfox, but it had me hooked, i treated it much like i did the Saturn, pick it up cheap, track down the exclusives and see what 'gels'.

Was always a bloody nightmare trying to find used games in good condition, let alone boxed+with instructions mind.

I've still the Big Box Starfox here along with few other N64 games, know i've still got Jet Force, anyone after them?

Hybrid Heaven was a very unusual game. I remember sinking hours into it then just stopping one day. I will have to check it out again as I remember so little about it!

Just took delivery of a Japanese N64. I've been putting this off for some time. The plan is to upgrade those PAL games that got butchered in PAL (M64, MK64, Pilotwings, Waverace64) and others that got some PAL optimisation but are still slower and it is significant (e.g. F Zero X).

The US and JPN machines are not region locked - it's just a physical limitation utilising tabs in the cart slot and casing - but my console came with a bridge adaptor that gets over these measures (it came with the US version of Rogue Squadron - not my thing but proves it works) so I'll be getting US versions in the main to avoid language diffs but will also be looking for those interesting (to me) JPN only titles like Sin & Punishment and Tetris 64 (with heart rate monitor!!)

Got Waverace 64 boxed (JPN version) too as I've never played it before. Always avoided the PAL version as it is reported to be a very poor port. It can look a bit rough in places (especially on an LCD panel - my CRT won't display in colour via s-video which is what the N64 pushes out unmodded which is a pity) but it plays extremely well. Very enjoyable game.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, however....

I picked up an N64 last week (was £10 with a PS2) and came with Goldeneye, Shadowman, Zelda OOT, a football game , Perfect Dark(all boxed) two controllers, rumble pack. No PSU though.

I've raided ebay and added, Lylat Wars, Waveracer 64, Rogue Squardron and F Zero X

Thoughts??? Am I going the right way here?

Plus, anywhere I can get N64 games? Ebay is a bit hit and miss and I'm after a few titles (Beetle Adventure Racing is one)

TrekMD

We have a thread listing several online retro stores.  I haven't specifically looked for N64 games but there may be some that do have games for the system:  http://www.retrovideogamer.co.uk/http://www.retrovideogamer.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=38620#p38620 .  I believe the last one I posted sells for all systems.

Going to the final frontier, gaming...

Not sure where you live mate but the retro shop in Dunstable where I live has tons of N64 games, they are nearly all boxed too. I coukd always grab any he has for you if you want too. His prices are less than ebay and he gives RVG members a discount! Look in the store directory for Games Monkey.

I was at work when I posted that and so just add a bit more, the link for his shop is here - http://www.retrovideogamer.co.uk/index.php?page=gamezmonkey

If you give him a ring he would be able to tell you what he had and would take paypal payments and post games to you if you wanted. Just tell him you are a friend of Kieren.

Thanks for this mate, appreciated. I know where this place is, I live in Aylesbury and regularly in Tring - by the bit where the A5 crosses and used to be a godawful rounadbout!

I may well give him a call - some of the prices on Ebay are silly.

PSU came yesterday - Waverace 64 is fantastic.... quite impressed with the N64 so far.

Also need a Gamecube controller.....
