Welcome to my Super Nintendo Obscura thread, I've done this thread not to be bias towards the SNES or annoy the Mega-Drive posse here at RVG, this is all about games you guys may never heard of or played, since a good few of them , never saw the daylight outside Japan, when they were release back in the 90's, so rather than talk about Mario this and Sonic that, this is to talk about games so fucking whacked out  that appeared for the SNES back in the day. and from my experiences with them, since at the time I was lucky to own a SNES Backup-device which allowed me to play such stuff, so some real strange games here, and some great little gems also.

So I'll start with is either an insult or simply a bizarre name for a fighting game, app-ly named :[/align:3ri6jatf]

[/align:3ri6jatf]
A futuristic fighting in the lines of Dragon Ball Z, made in 1994, these type of games seemed to be the style of things back in 1994, and where made by the dozen in the Japan at the time.[/align:3ri6jatf]

On your left are the main characters in the game: Bright Primary Colours Ninja, Bad Hair Day Man and Obligatory Female, Character. I only played as the guy in the middle, but since this is a fighting game, we'll meet our friends and punch them in the head pretty soon anyway, so you'll get to see what they're made of. This is one of the absolutes in one-on-one beat'em ups: friends will eventually end up dropkicking each other straight in the groin, often because one of them is brainwashed. Other games don't care about explaining and just asks us to accept Ruy beating his childhood friend Ken into a blond little pulp, and then again others, such as Justice League: Task Force, cover their buttocks by introducing the element of evil robot copies.

Since the entire game is in Japanese, I have no idea what it's about. I can still tell you how the gameplay works, In this game, you're either in the foreground or the background, and your opponent is always on the opposite end of the screen. To fight whoever flies thar yonder in the distance, you send out projectiles, in our case fireballs. These behave differently depending on which of the four main buttons you press: if you press the A button, they fly in a curve towards the upper right part of the screen, if you push the Y button, they go left and down and so on and so forth. Sadly, they move so slowly your opponent has a good three seconds to get out of the way, and in so weird curves that aiming is impossible. Also, the screen constantly twists in all directions. It's all kinda 3D, you see.
[/align:3ri6jatf]

and what's this all about..Weird or what?[/align:3ri6jatf]
[/align:3ri6jatf]

Next up, we have...
[/align:3ri6jatf]
Do Re Mi Fantasy: Milon no DokiDoki Daibouken[/align:3ri6jatf]
[/align:3ri6jatf]
I'd be surprised if you'd played this game before, I'd be surprised if you've even heard of it. Due to the fact that Do-Re-Mi Fantasy: Milon's Doki Doki Adventure was never released outside of Japan. One look at the game and you may think this game is for children, while it's true that this game has got a child-like look to it, but I'd love to see a 6 year old beat this game. The games gorgeous visuals, happy creatures and cheerful backgrounds all disguise how devilishly hard this game can get, at first the game is simple, if a little too easy, then my god does the frustration kick in..now don't get me wrong, I love the game to pieces but it's easy to become angered at it.
[/align:3ri6jatf]
[/align:3ri6jatf]

:o :o HMMMMMM  :o :o[/align:3ri6jatf]

up next........

[/align:3ri6jatf]
The King of Demons / Majyuuou © 1995[/align:3ri6jatf]

King of Demons is a sweet SNES platformer that was released late in the systems life. You take the role of a man named Abel, who's wife and daughter were kidnapped by your supposed best friend, Bayer. Typically, victims of kidnapping face a grim fate, but even more so in this case. It seems a demon needed some resurrecting (And not just any demon, mind you. The KING of demons!), and your family was just what was needed to accomplish this. Abel doesn't like this very much, so he takes his lucky handgun on a quest of love and vengeance.

[/align:3ri6jatf]
The gameplay is pretty good: Think of a mix of Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts and Castlevania. Abel can double jump, slide, stomp, and shoot a semiautomatic pistol (Which can also be charged). You can also get a familiar ala Symphony of the Night that will attack your enemies and resurrect you if you die, which just happens to be your dead wifes soul in the form of a mutated looking fairy (?!). Also, after each boss fight, you can pick up a crystal that will transform you into one of three forms: A red creature that has really fast attacks, a green demon that has more power and less speed, and a blue dragon that's really big and slow but very powerful.
[/align:3ri6jatf]
Graphically, the game is good, with an art style that reminds me of Blackthorne. A game this dark in nature really needs decent graphics to convey the proper atmosphere (Remember Monster Party? Good game, but about as scary as the Teletubbies. Oh, wait..), and it doesn't fail in that aspect. The music and sound effects are alright, but nothing really memorable. Overall, if you like games with a dark atmosphere, or even platformers in general, you should like this game.

next up....
[/align:3ri6jatf]
Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun A.K.A.  River City Ransom 2[/align:3ri6jatf]
[/align:3ri6jatf]
Shodai Nekketsu Kouha is often misnomered as River City Ransom 2, but that´s not quite right. Kunio and Riki actually gain experience, RPG-style, as well as equip weapons and use items that their enemies drop, learning new moves and special skills, but there´s no money - so you can´t buy anything. That said, there´s a day/night cycle implemented into the game, and certain places are only open at certain times of the day. You can also play some minigames to earn some extra items!
[/align:3ri6jatf]
The story involves Kunio´s gang from Nekketsu High being invited to a vacation in Osaka by an exchange student. On his way to the hotel, however, Kunio is ambushed by thugs! He quickly learns of the Osaka Student Union, a gang of highschoolers intent on taking over Japan! This obviously won´t do, so gut-punching ensues! and as you can see, there has been an English translation done recently, so now the game can be via emulation or on an everdrive device in English.

finally for now..we have......

[/align:3ri6jatf]
Kemco ©1994[/align:3ri6jatf]
[/align:3ri6jatf]
I was really looking forward to playing G2 back in 1994, when i read about it in Super Play...and the game looked like it'd be a blast to play. The SNES version appears very hard to find, and although a US version was in the works, it never made it. After playing it, I can't say they made a bad decision.....
[/align:3ri6jatf]
G2 is a ho-hum action scroller. There are 15 levels. I beat the game on my first try in 40 minutes. You go through short levels, killing everything (hence the full name GENOCIDE 2... on a side note the US release was called Generations 2) but it's just oh so DULL. There's no variety to it, the controls are cumbersome and the graphics and sound very bland. If you ever seen the GAMERA monster films of Japan, the death cries of the enemies in G2 sound exactly like the screams belonging to the villain GYAOS for the classic japan Godzilla movies back in the 80's which was a nice touch.
You simply go right, hack and hack (the special weapons aren't worth mentioning much either) and proceed to next level and repeat. It's more shallow than a slip-and-slide. OK, that was a little harsh... but it's true, so if the level design blows, you'd hope for at least interesting boss designs and battles, right? Not here, either.

well that's it for now guys... i will of course continue this after xmas..now, i don't want any fanboys leaping out here, this is for everyone , just never seen these cool little games before..to go out and check them out for yourselves

All the best

I love Japan lol
Some amazing games have come out of there but is it just me or does the second game look like Noddy?
Just checked out a video of King of Demons and it does look pretty damned sweet! I love the music, particularly during boss fights, very Jazzy!

Btw...the characters in Bastard are (Left to Right) Gara, TiaNoto and Dark Schneider and the game is based on an anime about one of the greatest mages of all time (the aforementioned Dark Schneider) who is awakened from death and aims to take over the world and in doing so hump lots of ladies and kill lots of other uber-mages :)

I have re-uploaded them to a new image host..should work now..if you refresh your browser, but saying that , @ Laird, you already had a problem looking at images before..when everyone else could view them?..so your browser could be starting to get corrupted maybe?

TL

Nope, I can see them all now. Before I was getting stock "no hotlinking" style images.

Greyfox

Okay..it was the hotlinks I removed where the cuperate here, fixed now, so hope you enjoy the look at's, more after Xmas :)

Nice idea Greyfox, I'm gonna try some of these games for myself now I know they exist. I have already downloaded Do Re Mi Fantasy: Milon no DokiDoki Daibouken and it seems like a bit of fun.
