Wow these consoles are pretty evenly matched on both games so far for me. I'm going with the Megadrive for Afterburner but it's just so close so it's probably just my inner Sega fanboy surfacing.

For Rastan, the PC Engine wins on both the graphics and sound front.  What was with the different music in the Megadrive version?

With Afterburner, then it was a bit more evenly matched, but I would still say the PC Engine took it.  The scrolling seemed better on that version.

Right, let's look at another game shall we?

Another game from Taito but this one is a real classic - New Zealand Story

I like this better on the PC Engine, so it gets my vote.

Shadowrunner

Yeah I like the PC Engine version better too

Rogue Trooper

Well, never played Rastan 2 on either format, but like the look of the PC Engine version, more than i do the MD version, but comes at expense of worse audio, so  a DRAW on this one.

Afterburner:Personally felt it only really 'worked' as a flashy arcade cabinet, put it on any home format and it looses a lot of the impact, think PC Engine version impressed me more (think MD version was an early MD game, but i'd have expected more of it, it's on a Sega console fer blooming hecks sake), so  WIN for PC Engine here.

New Zealand Story?, well, never really took to it, played fair bit of on C64+ST, own on the Tatio Retro comps on both PSP+Xbox, but never bothered with, much like Rainbow Islands, i find it a hugely over-rated game.

The MD version, i believe (like Toki) is'nt stictly 'true' to the arcade game, features 'remixed' levels, so dunno if that's a for or again'st-how are we 'judging' these? closest to arcade orig?.

Technically i'd say it looks sharper (sprites wise) than PC Engine version and better audio (PC Eng.music i found a little hard on the old lug holes), but PC Eng.version closer to the arcade, so going for a DRAW here.

This was a really hard one for me to decide, I actually prefer how the MD version looks and sounds but it's not the same as the arcade version.

The PC Engine version is identical to the arcade game and I prefer games to be faithful so I am going with the PCE version on that basis.

I make that 3-0 to the PCE so far!!!  :o

Let's take a look at another game, for a bit of a change here is a sports title - Super Volleyball

NZS - a draw for the same reasons RT said.

SV - MD because it has music.

This one is a tough call but I'm giving it to the MD.  The in-game music definitely adds to the atmosphere.  :)

Have to give Super Volleyball to the MD. The music plus the animation I like better too.
