Quote from: "Darques_Pandemonium"Not many people realize that Columns was also released on the PC Engine back in the day. I actually find the PC Engine colors to look much nicer, however, I think the Mega Drive version has nice sound. Draw for me on this one.

PC Engine Longplay [054] Columns

PC Engine

Columns Sega Genesis Original Gameplay

Genesis/Mega Drive

Not a great deal of difference here but I think the Mega Drive edges it slightly.

TrekMD

Hmm, more a draw for me for Columns.  Sound is better on the MD but I much prefer how the graphics look on the PC Engine.

Going to the final frontier, gaming...

Nice. Interesting how that one has turned out. I actually prefer the way the PC Engine version plays to the Genesis one too, to be honest. It feels more like the Arcade cab controls do, especially if you happen to have one of the Arcade Sticks.

So with my scorecard at 13 all we better look at another game and this is also another title by Sega too, Thunderblade:

PC Engine Longplay [141] Thunder Blade
PC Engine version

Mega Drive Longplay [213] Super Thunder Blade
Mega Drive version

I prefer the PC Engine of Super Thunder Blade, better view. Columns looks good on both. So a tie.

+1 for the Megadrive. PC-Engine does win on graphics technically, but the style of the MD graphics and the awesome soundtrack take it home for me.

Really  :o

I didn't even know the PC Engine version existed until I played it at Retromission last month and let me say that it pisses all over the Mega Drive version in every possible way. The awful MD game is a terrible jerky mess that is almost unplayable, where as the PCE game is a very impressive conversion of the original coin-op that even tries to fake the scaling.

lol you can tell i have been in bed with man flu, i was still on afterburner 2 from page 1, i didn't even notice the other 13 pages.

+1 for Genesis on that :)

But yeah MD Thunder Blade is clearly poo, just look at the side to side motion compared to the slow scroll rate vertically...thats just bad.

PC Engine Thunder Blade wins hands down. That version is so close to the Arcade Machine. I remember wasting so much time playing it at my friends house when I was a kid as he had an honest to God PC Engine, not the Turbografx 16. Such a good game. We'd play it and then head across the base to the bowling alley and play the Arcade Cab and just try and really find the differences between it and the home game. Later on when I got my Genesis, I bought the game and was so disappointed with it.

PCEngine wins for Thunderblade both sound and visuals seem much better.

Let's look at another game then - Fire Pro. Wrestling!

Fire Pro Wrestling Combination Tag - 1989
NEC PC Engine version

Fire Pro Wrestling Gaiden (megadrive)
Sega Mega Drive version

Well, you know me, HUGE wrestling fan, so I have actually played both of these. Graphically, I do like the cleaner look of the PC Engine game. Sound does go to the Megadrive though. However, it's too bad these can't be played because the PC Engine version actually does come out on top as the controls aren't as tight in the Megadrive version.

TL

I haven't actually played either version, I should probably fix that at some point.

From the videos though the MD version seems to have the edge.
