I couldn't find thread for this s o decided to create one, and yes I am a fan of Amiga first and foremost but I'm not biased if there's a better version of a game out there.

Ok first up Chuck Rock.

I fixed those links for you so the videos are embedded ;)

The Amiga version of Chuck Rock is slightly better because of the music.

ST No Second Prize is better because its faster and I prefer the music.

Ta youtube on ipad is still naff for that!

Chuck Rock also has better sfx and dual play field background (parallax)
I agree No Second Prize is slightly faster on the ST though not enough to make much difference when playing its plenty faster enough with the mouse!
Though I prefer the Amiga music, remember just leaving it in demo mode just listening really nice music, not a fan of the ST music, but impressed with the speed and colours used.

Lot of Amiga/ST games i saw at the time boiled down to faster 3D on ST, better sound, more colours on Amiga.

But then you had things like Midnight resistance: only 1 player on ST, push scrolling etc.

Developers like Bitmap Bros would really push boat out to ensure ST versions were as close as possible to Amiga versions though.

Yeah I was really impressed with Xenon 2 on the ST, I was expecting bomb the beep! But most impressed with what they pulled off in the intro, although the in-game cut down tune is more closer to what I expected.

Chuck Rock firstly what an epic game. But the Amiga version just looks slightly better and better sound, for me anyway.

Own: Jaguar, Lynx, Dreamcast, Saturn, MegaDrive, MegaCD, 32X, GameGear, PS3, PS, PSP, Wii, GameCube, N64, DS, GBA, GBC, GBP, GB,  Xbox, 3DO, CDi,  WonderSwan, WonderSwan Colour NGPC

Rogue Trooper

Looking back through old ST+Amiga magazines, in the early days at least, Amiga owners seemed to be paying £5 more for an ST port with better samples, more colours, full screen graphics if lucky.

The issue of which versions ran faster is a curious one:ST Superman for example ran slower than the Amiga version, but was more playable as a result, where as opposite was true with Skychase, ST ran faster and thus more playable.

Surprised to see Tiger Road having brighter visuals than Amiga version, due to choices made in terms of colours used.

The issue of sound is another area where it really could add to a games atmosphere (Starglider 2, Wicked etc), yet it's an area i find sadly ignored in todays games.

Honestly? Both of those are kind of atrocious. The Atari ST version has some really good music, but the frame rate looks absolutely terrible. The Amiga verison looks like it plays a little faster, but the one song they chose for the actual fights plays for... about five seconds before it loops. Not good.

If I had to chose ONE, I'd go for the ST version. But only for the music.

AmigaJay

Yes both are shockingly bad, even with a pirated version from school I smashed the disks up after a week, the only time snes owning mates had a laugh at us Amiga owners at school!

Yep, in the old days it was £24.99 for an Amiga game and £19.99 for an ST game.

I remember playing SF2 on he Amiga, wow it was absolutely dire. It wasn't the visuals or sound, it was how could they not simply get the characters moving properly? There was little impact from punches or kick. The whole game was a disaster and should go down as one of the worst ever ports.

TL

Yep both versions are tragic but like others said, I much prefer the music on the ST version.

After the horror of SF2 let's cleanse our palettes with this fantastic game:

Rogue Trooper

Amiga music technically far superior to the ST version, as i'd expect, but that's NOT to say ST version is poor in the audio dept, i very much liked the music.

Why does the St version have a shorter missile range than the Amiga? (looks like missiles only go few feet from ship), not that Amigas are long range missiles, lol.

Did this effect gameplay onthe ST version?

Meant to say on the St Vs Amiga SF2 video, whilst BOTH versions were awful, i never took' to any ST/Amiga 2D beat Em Up's other than Metal Masters and IK+.

Amiga exclusives like Elfmania etc, characters just seemed far too floaty, as if characters fighting in a low-G enviroment or something.
