Gotta agree with everyone else here, Lynx it is. I'm going to have to get this for my new handheld.

Next game up is the conversions of the classic Atari arcade game Paperboy

Game Gear version

Lynx version

Please note that the sound in the Lynx version is a bit off because it's using emulation

Rogue Trooper

Disclaimer 1st then...

I owned both machines (Game Gear 1st, then Lynx Mk 1, then MK2), only played Super Off Road on C64 (at a time when i was days away from getting my 520STFM, so never really bothered with it.Klax-Again only played C64 version, not my thing, so i'll be commenting on video comparison and Paperboy, only home version i played was C64 (again) as felt outside of arcade, game was missing the same feel, so again, comments on video comparison.Phew..onto comments then:

Klax: That R.G's very own D.Jones responsible for that video?....Lynx version loks superb, great, vibrant look to it, sounds great (nice speech)-could you play holding lynx 'sideways'? as it looks like it seems more suited that way.

Game Gear version..OMG awful..rough looking, poor sound, nasty thing.

Paperboy:Game Gear, very nice looking, great sprites, seems very fast, but audio got on my t*its!.

Lynx:Hmnn..poorly defined sprites (blocky), seems to run slower, but far better audio and great use of colour.

Rogue Trooper

Often hard to call on these comparisons, as when it's video capture of games running on emulators, i find it often boils down to me wondeing if games are running at correct speed etc-NOT having a moan at way threads are done, my fav.threads on here, it's just an observation from someone who's memory of the Game Gear was games having nice looking sprites, but running on a poor quality LCD screen which had a 'Benny' when it came to dealing with fast moving games (screen blur often chronic) and Lynx, whilst chunky at times visually, never seemed that bad.

Can only play these games today via emulation on either PSP (sshh..own 2 CFW models, 2 legit f.w models) or soft modded Xbox (again own original 'virgin' model).

So it's very much appreciated when it's pointed out that sound is off or colours not 100% spot on.

Yes, Klax is played with the Lynx vertical to take advantage of the long screen.

With regards to Paperboy - after watching the video the emu appears to be running the game a bit slow and frame skipping, just like that Super Off-Road video. I really do wish that Lynx emulation was better. However I used to own a Game Gear and I did have Paperboy for it, sold it a few years back because it was rubbish. It's not very good and almost unplayable due to the zoomed in screen that means you can't see anything around the huge main sprite.

So although I do think the Lynx version could be better, it's just a port of the ST version after all, it still pisses all over the horrible Game Gear version from a great height.

Rogue Trooper

Hope to see Lemmings and Desert Strike get the comparison treatment at some point.

I hope you are joking!  :o

Have you played them? The GG version is near enough unplayable.

zapiy

I am on about the video, to look at them.

Still don't agree, the GG version is too zoomed in with those huge sprites (what makes it unplayable) and the sound is horrible.

I do think the Lynx version is a bit rough looking though as I already said.

Ho hum, this topic is all about opinions so you are welcome to your own (even if it is wrong! :P)

zapiy

Lol i just pick what looks best to the naked eye..but your right its all about opinions.

Shadowrunner

Having never played either version and just going by these videos I like the Game Gear version much better. Sorry Laird, gotta agree with Zapiy here, even if that makes me wrong too  :P

onthinice

I like the Lynx on all three but Super Off-Road looked really good on the GameGear.

The next game on the list is Lorciel's highly under rated strategy puzzle game Skweek
