Games with Female Protagonists

I love good storytelling, and good art imitates life. In life, there are men and women, and I don't see why this shouldn't be the case for video games, too. Not every video game needs a brawny male superhero, and not every female protagonist needs to conform to the Amazonian stereotype. I just started playing Diablo III: Reaper of Souls on the Xbox 360. When you're selecting your character class, the player is given a chance to also specify the gender of the adventurer. I found I liked about half of them as men and half as women. RPGs since as far back as I can remember have had a female in the lead role: Alis in Phantasy Star, Terra in Final Fantasy VI. Of course, there was Samus in Metroid. I like that there is variety in the casting and characterization, and think this is a good thing for video games.

No it doesn't really matter to me. Given the choice of creating a character I always go with a male, but I'm also a big fan of the Tomb Raider series so playing as a female is fine too.

Actually, it never seemed to bother me and in some games, like Streets of Rage, I actually picked the the female character on purpose because I liked how they played better.
