I do like the multi colored Maryo sprite.  Probably done with layering multi sprites on top of eachother.

Also, probably, means less enemy and bonus item sprites on screen.  But, the players eyes are always on Maryo.  May as well make it pretty!  They did the same thing when making Spyro for the playstation.  Allocated a huge amount of their polygon budget to make the main character look good.

Always a pity when impressive new games come out and bait cease & desist monsters like Nintendo.

That being said, the music is very, very true to form O_O

Retro News & Chat / Re: The History of the Atari XEGS

Knew exactly one kid with a XEGS.  Brought it to school once and failed to awe everyone.  Never saw it again :)

I wish the trend of augmenting consoles into full computers stayed strong.  The middle route of a sort of console / sort of computer seems like it was a hard sell.

Not really an option to click, buy and have the Concerto shipped to you.  I think they even disabled the pre-order button.

Some people haven't gotten responses to pre-orders payed for ($10 deposit) in 12/4.

Already have mateos solution but it's more complicated than what I'm used to.  Can't wait for the 7800 flash cart eco system to expand!

I've played it over the years.  It's definitely original.  Makes me feel like there's hope for single screen games :)

Homebrew Chat / New Atari 2600 Homebrew: Upp Plus Plus
February 01, 2021, 00:35:56 AM
Had to change a few things in Upp due to improvements in Stella.  Ended up with so many improvements it's really a new, exciting iteration!

Improvements include:
* 32 new hand crafted levels
* Optional Genesis C button support
* Player ships stack making 3 lives more risky due to taller hitbox

Available as a digital download pay-as-you-want at Itch io

This was my jam on the IBM PC in CGA mode.  Partly because I "edited" the levels by corrupting the game data.

This version looks interesting.  I caught a boss at the end exploding in a particle effect.  Wonder what other wonders are enabled by the extra RAM.

Hey!  I make games that need to run consistently on original, clone and emulation based systems.

Is there a way to calculate an appropriate player speed that looks about the same regardless of genesis variant?

I've tried fumbling with counters during the main loop and vblank but never got results.

Almost had an Atari 2600 title present this year but John Hancock decided to not come as a vendor.

Pretty bummed about that.  There's always next year, though!

The expense and rumored fragility has stopped me from collecting this.

I was hoping the FPGA Arcade / Replay board would become actually available to purchase thing as it has an Adventurevision core.   Hopefully some other FPGA project will come along.

Any mini console that doesn't allow you to play ROMs or carts is a horribly useless trinket.  Worse, if they succeed then we'll have more artificially restricted new hardware in the future.  As old hardware dies new fully capable hardware needs to come forth.

I guess my boycott of restricted mini consoles also depends on the ease of hacking to make them run additional games.  I did buy that PSX mini.

Another thing I'm holding off on though interesting.  They've been quite clear on not wanting outside developers initially.   So, as an indie developer and publisher this can't be something I get into.  I'm hoping Collectorvision will get something going and then they might ease up a little.

ZPH tends to keep in touch with me.  Next time we have a 2600 release I'll make sure to give them whatever bullet points are needed.  One more voice with certain data points can help :)

Sorry for the confusion regarding file sizes.  The first RVG Blast game did indeed start at 2k.  Not many Atari 2600 games come that small.  I changed it up just in case the size was a problem.  So, the first game is 4k with a lot of filler.  The second RVG Blast game is 4k to start with.
