Unreal work bud, love it, would love to do a feature for you on the frontpage about this too?

How did you hear about the 3rd button?

I read about it when people were talking about the Final Fight 30th anniversary edition that allows you to play three players simultaneously. They were talking about having this game run on the original hardware and wanting to ensure that this third button was carried over.

I actually like having it dual wired to the start buttons because it makes you have to think quick with some effort and reach and do a quick tap on the button if you get grabbed.

Splendid looking cabinet that. The pipe is a great touch. Nothing quite like a dedicated cab. :)

That third button - you say secret - was it accessible in the arcade or was it not possible to use because of the limited buttons?

Yeah, basically Final Fight would only have two buttons on the machine labeled "attack" and "jump". The instructions on the bezel also only discuss these two buttons.

I had read somewhere that the third button was perhaps used in game testing before it was released. The fact that your character laughs when he escapes is an interesting touch.

Generally, if a person were to connect a Final Fight arcade PCB to another arcade JAMMA cabinet with three buttons (Double Dragon for instance) you would automatically have access to the third button. However, as it wouldn't seem to do anything regularly and all the instructions fail to mention it it would probably go ignored. There really only a very short time frame where pressing it will allow you to escape a hold move. Interesting to realize after all these years.

Maybe this has already been discussed here before, but here is a link to the Final Fight 30th anniversary mod for three simultaneous players:

Hi everyone,

There's been lots of interesting content on this website in the past months.

I had been working gathering parts for sometime to complete a Final Fight project. This was probably the most ambitious restoration I've done yet.

Here's a couple of photos, and a more detailed write up is at the link below:

BONUS: there is actually a secret third button in arcade Final Fight that will let you parry grab attacks. When Andore and other bosses attempt to grab you, pressing this third button will actually allow you to escape! Your character will laugh and you will be free! I have wired in the start buttons so that if you get grabbed, a quick tap and you'll have a chance to escape. Who knew?!

Nice video to see all of the games. I'd his assessment of Centipede for the 5200 though. That game is excellent and because it uses the same audio chip as the arcade it sounds identical. It is pretty much every bit on par with the arcade but just a different format (horizontal vs vertical) layout. I'm very happy as an adult to finally be able to own the trackball controller I never had as a kid.

Not much love for the 5200?  Here is a video that looks at some history of the system and ALL the games sold during it's commercial lifetime...

I've been playing a good amount of Saturn lately. I appreciate that a good number of shoot em ups allow you to rotate the screen for a vertical format.

Saturn Bomberman and Powerslave are quite good. Elevator Action Returns is interesting as well.

Speechless. Really. And in 1998. And only compatible with original GB. But the GB is essentially a mini computer just like every console, so why not.

Sounds like you have yours set up nicely and it probably works great for a wide variety of games you have on it. The Playstation controllers are really nice controllers to use. I may look into modifying mine in the future. I have an HDMI widescreen CRT and I'm going to try it on that again to see how the graphics compare with my earlier testing on an LCD style TV.

So far I have around 10.000 games on mine, using RetroArch, and with the newest 1.7.7 release it's quite stable, before I got a lot of freezing when closing content. I'm happy with it, not playing so many PSX games anyways, concentrated more on even more retro.

A friend of mine also has one. We were literally using the box as a door stop to hold the door to his game room open when moving some video arcade and pinball games in and out. So it did get some usage.

I thought the game play was ok, I guess it really is that the graphics don't transfer well to an HD television. I can't really blame Sony for that. It's just a product that doesn't work on today's displays. Again, let us connect it to a CRT and I think 85% of my issues would go away and it would be a much more pleasant experience, especially with all the mods that are available for the system.

Maybe if these classic series of consoles would work on a CRT it would also increase demand for them and reduce the waste in landfills.

Sounds like it may not be worth even the $20?  I can't believe they were selling them for $60 originally!

I picked one up for about $25 shipped. I played it one time. Honestly, I found the Playstation graphics look terrible on an HD television. Really just absolutely awful. Washed out and the polygon edges do not look nice upscaled. Video intros on a variety of games have extreme pixel artifacts. As far as a collector item, it looks nice sitting on a shelf and perhaps you can use the USB controllers for use on a computer or some other system. All I could think of while playing was "I want to play an original Playstation instead."

If this would have simply had component out so you could play it on a CRT television it would have been 8x times better. It really would have. I'm a CRT die hard though, and essentially stopped watching TV in 2008 when the broadcast changed as I highly dislike flat panel displays as the angle of viewing is bad, and black levels are bad. I know they are getting much better now, but the TV technology era from 2008 to 2016 or so was just not good I thought.

OK guys, these are selling for $20 at Target.  Worth the $20?!?!?

Personally, I'm glad the USA gets the three button controller. I can only think of Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter that really need the six button, and I would rather play these on different systems. I'd rather have the three button controller for all the other games. The Sega six button controller button build quality seemed extremely cheap for a first party release. Third party six button controllers were much better in my opinion than the official Sega ones.

Yes, I know people will disagree with me on MK on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, but I felt it was better on the SuperNES. The graphics and sounds effects were much clearer. Many sounds were missing on the Genesis/Mega Drive. The size of the figures is also much smaller on the Genesis. Even the 32X version of MKs used the smaller sized characters sprites for some reason.

Good selection of games though, and the design of this mini looks to be very well done.

Would like to see a TurboGrafx/PC Engine mini.

Interesting video. The cost of Famicom vs the 2800: approximately 14,000 to 24,000 was such a stretch. Even if the cost was the same would have been a hard sell.

Retro News & Chat / Re: The joy of CRT

I've hardly ever seen a CRT TV fail.  Playing retro games on a CRT really is the way to go.  They were designed to work on those TV's and they do look well on them.

Yes, when box art would often show motion trail to depict the sprites, it's clear they were intended for CRT. Playing Pong on a non CRT definitely takes away from the enjoyment (and specifically games with primarily black backgrounds).

I ended up getting some of these and it was well worth it, they work fine with the NES Advantage:
