#21
Recently, through the help of fellow (& more knowledgeable) Atari enthusiasts, I was able to (finally) acquire the steps necessary to compile two different types of source code for various games. The following outlines the steps used to accomplish this in each but lacks technical info or explanations as to how it works. For that, please track down and read the official Atari Documentation on the subject as the following is more of a compilation of info so it's in one place instead of multiple threads with titles not indicative to the content, making a search on the topic cumbersome and wasteful, at best.

*****************************ASM-one method: (huge thanks to @avick )
This method was successful in compiling the source for Painter which was written in Assembly. The original thread starts here and the basic steps to compile this source code are as follows:

Download jagdev_102.exe from Belboz's site and install it (defaults to C:\jaguar)
https://www.hillsoftware.com/files/atari/jaguar/ (in case the link gets corrupt)

Download the Painter Source from Sinister Developments
http://www.kewlplace.com/sinister/painter_source.htm (in case the link gets corrupt)
Extract the zip file into a folder named paintsrc and move it into C:\jaguar (full path will now be C:\jaguar\paintsrc)

Navigate to C:\ and change folder settings to show hidden/system files and right click on autoexec.bat
Choose edit
Paste in the following (not overwriting any important settings etc.):
@echo off
set PATH=%PATH%;C:\JAGUAR\BIN
set RDBRC=C:\JAGUAR\BIN\RDB.RC
set DBPATH=C:\JAGUAR\BIN
set ALNPATH=C:\JAGUAR\BIN
set MACPATH=C:\JAGUAR\INCLUDE
set GCC_EXEC_PREFIX=C:/JAGUAR/BIN
set TEMP=C:
doskey

Quicksave and close autoexec.bat

The Makefile in C:\jaguar\paintsrc should look like this:
#====================================================================
#       Macro & Assembler flags
#====================================================================

STADDR = 10000

MACFLAGS = -fb -g

ALNFLAGS = -v -v -e -g -rd -a $(STADDR) x B000

#====================================================================
#       Default Rules
#====================================================================
.SUFFIXES: .o .s

.s.o:
        mac $(MACFLAGS) $*

#====================================================================
#       EXECUTABLES
#====================================================================

OBJ = main.o

painter.cof: $(OBJ)
        aln $(ALNFLAGS) -o painter.cof $(OBJ)

main.o:     main.s

If not, copy the above and paste it in, then quicksave and exit the Makefile/editor

Copy cmd.exe from C:/Windows/system32 to C:/jaguar/paintsrc and open it
Paste and run: smac -fb main.s
Paste and run: sln -e -a 10000 x x main.o

A 1.70MB file should appear named .cof
Change it to Painter.cof and run it through JiFFI to get the Painter_jiffi.cdi file that can be burned to a CDR for encrypted Painter.
(Here is a guide on how to use JiFFI and burn CDRs in Linux)

******************************C-1st of 2 methods: (huge thanks to @rush6432 )
1st method, using autoexec.bat
Like the above, this method uses editing the autoexec.bat file and was successful in compiling the source for DOOM which was written in C. The original thread starts here and the basic steps to compile this source code are as follows:
Download the new installer I made, unzip & double click it.
or
Download jagdev.zip from Belboz's site and unzip the contents into a folder named jaguar Copy the jaguar folder to C:\
https://www.hillsoftware.com/files/atari/jaguar/ (in case the link gets corrupt)

Download the DOOM Source from AtariAge
https://www.atariage.com/Jaguar/archives/DoomSource/ (in case the link gets corrupt)
Extract the zip file into a folder named JagDoomSource and move it into C:\jaguar (full path will now be C:\jaguar\JagDoomSource)

Navigate to C:\ and change folder settings to show hidden/system files and right click on autoexec.bat
Choose edit
Paste in the following (not overwriting any important settings etc.):
@echo off
cls
set PATH=%PATH%;C:\JAGUAR\BIN
set RDBRC=C:\JAGUAR\BIN\RDB.RC
set DBPATH=C:\JAGUAR\BIN
set ALNPATH=C:\JAGUAR\BIN
set MACPATH=C:\JAGUAR\INCLUDE
set GCC_EXEC_PREFIX=C:/JAGUAR/BIN
set TEMP=C:
doskey

Quicksave and close autoexec.bat

Navigate to C:/jaguar/JagDoomSource and find a file named Makefile
Right click on it and choose edit
Double check lines 71 & 72 to ensure they say:
GAS2OBJ = mac -fb $?
Cx2OBJ = gcc -x c++ -m68000 -Wall -DJAGUAR -O2  -c -o $@ $<

Change line 74 from:
C2OBJ = gcc -B/prog/jaguar/bin/ -b m68k -V2.6 -Wall -DJAGUAR -O2 -c -o $@ $?
to
C2OBJ = gcc -B/jaguar/bin/ -b m68k -V2.6 -Wall -DJAGUAR -O2 -c -o $@ $?
Quicksave and exit the Makefile/editor

Copy cmd.exe from C:/Windows/system32 to C:/jaguar/JagDoomSource and open it
Type make and hit Enter to compile the source
A 244kb file named doom.abs should appear in the folder. This can be opened in a hex editor, copied and pasted into the DOOM ROM overwriting everything up to offset 40000 (where the wad starts) and run on a Skunkboard. (there are other/better ways and I may update once I learn how but for now this will work.. in theory)

******************************C-2nd of 2 methods: (huge thanks to @rush6432 )
Using DOSBox & setpath.bat (instead of autoexec.bat)
Unlike the above, this method uses DOSBox along with creating a file named setpath.bat on C:\ and was successful in compiling the source for DOOM which was written in C. The original thread starts here and the basic steps to compile this source code are as follows:
Download the latest version of DOSBox for Windows
Install to defaults and close out of the app
Download the new installer I made, unzip & double click it.
or
Download jagdev.zip from Belboz's site and unzip the contents into a folder named jaguar Copy the jaguar folder to C:\
https://www.hillsoftware.com/files/atari/jaguar/ (in case the link gets corrupt)

Download the DOOM Source from AtariAge
https://www.atariage.com/Jaguar/archives/DoomSource/ (in case the link gets corrupt)
Extract the zip file into a folder named JagDoomSource and move it into C:\jaguar (full path will now be C:\jaguar\JagDoomSource)

Navigate to C:\ and create a file named setpath.bat, right click on it and choose edit
Paste in the following:
@echo off
cls
set PATH=%PATH%;C:\JAGUAR\BIN
set RDBRC=C:\JAGUAR\BIN\RDB.RC
set DBPATH=C:\JAGUAR\BIN
set ALNPATH=C:\JAGUAR\BIN
set MACPATH=C:\JAGUAR\INCLUDE
set GCC_EXEC_PREFIX=C:/JAGUAR/BIN
set TEMP=C:
cd jaguar\doom
@echo.
@echo Paths Set!

Quicksave and close setpath.bat

Navigate to C:/jaguar/JagDoomSource and find a file named Makefile
Right click on it and choose edit
Double check lines 71 & 72 to ensure they say:
GAS2OBJ = mac -fb $?
Cx2OBJ = gcc -x c++ -m68000 -Wall -DJAGUAR -O2  -c -o $@ $<

Change line 74 from:
C2OBJ = gcc -B/prog/jaguar/bin/ -b m68k -V2.6 -Wall -DJAGUAR -O2 -c -o $@ $?
to
C2OBJ = gcc -B/jaguar/bin/ -b m68k -V2.6 -Wall -DJAGUAR -O2 -c -o $@ $?
Quicksave and exit the Makefile/editor

Open DOSBox and type in the following one at a time: (there will be a warning when you mount C. Ignore it)
mount c c:\
c:
setpath

At the end you should see 2 lines on the black screen:
Paths Set!
c:\jaguar\doom>

Type make at the c:\jaguar\doom> prompt and hit Enter to compile the source
A 244kb file named doom.abs should appear in the folder. This can be opened in a hex editor, copied and pasted into the DOOM ROM overwriting everything up to offset 40000 (where the wad starts) and run on a Skunkboard. (there are other/better ways and I may update once I learn how but for now this will work.. in theory)

Just got this set up and played an awesome game of Tempest 2000. Didn't know a Linux version existed until I happened across some posts while searching for JagCD games. Incredible 8)

Download Linux version tar from this site & place in Home directory
(Edit: Site doesn't seem to be up all the time so I attached the tar ball below)
Open Terminal and type in:
ls
tar -xvf t2k-release-2005-09-16-194026.tar.gz

(can delete tar ball now, change the file extension on your dumped Tempest 2000 rom to .jag and place it in the folder that was created. Make sure the file is named exactly to: Tempest 2000.jag)

Back in Terminal"
cd t2k-release-2005-09-16-194026
./t2k

F1 for full screen and F11 to throttle Jaguar realistically (slow it to normal speed)
While playing press Esc to access settings

Controls:
F1 - Fullscreen toggle
F11 - Throttle toggle
O - option
P - pause (see below)
Z - A
X - B
C - C
Arrow keys
Numeric keypad (. is #)
Q - three-fingered salute to engage VLM
VLM: press Z (button A) twice to enter program mode, press O to engage
user programmable mode, then the numeric pad or numbers: first press is
bank, second press is effect in bank.

Joypads are supported.

Mouse-as-spinner mode is only loosely tested and probably not well
calibrated. Pause hits both pause keys so can be used to enable spinner
mode in game. Note that if spinner mode is enabled it is saved in the
EEPROM.

I was helping a newer person in the scene get some legal CDs for their collection and uploaded nearly everything I have over at AtariAge that was on my 4TB Jaguar external Hard Drive . Lots of great stuff in this collection including an encrypted version of the Soul Star CD. No bypass for this 8)
Might grab em while they last since it might get some heat.
The goodies start in this post but there's a ton more further down.

Retro News & Chat / Install DOOM 3 in Linux
August 19, 2016, 01:29:14 AM
Couldn't wait to get this installed and tear through some upgraded Doom levels! I remember the day this came out and while researching, heard it referred to as a retro game but for some reason its 2004 release doesn't seem that long ago... I did the following on Lubuntu 16.04 32 bit and it worked like a charm 8)

REF
Download the DOOM 3 installer

Move the file to your home directory
If you're running 64 bit version of Linux, open Terminal and paste:
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

Otherwise, via Terminal:
chmod +x doom3-linux-1.3.1.1304.x86.run
sudo ./doom3-linux-1.3.1.1304.x86.run

Scroll through the agreement but be careful not to pass the end acceptance question. Type y and hit Enter
When prompted for an installation path just hit Enter to use the default (/usr/local/games/doom3)
When prompted for a path to create the symbolic links I pasted the path to my home folder (/home/)
Type y when prompted to install the PunkBuster software and carefully scroll through the agreement like before
Type y for the startup menu entries
And y to continue installation

Copy the following files from the DOOM 3 installation disk(s) base folder into /usr/local/games/doom3-sdk/base:
base/pak000.pk4
base/pak001.pk4
base/pak002.pk4
base/pak003.pk4
base/pak004.pk4

The easiest thing I could do bc of all the higher level permissions, was to copy the files from the disks into a folder named D on my backup partition. Then, ran the following command to copy them over
sudo cp /media/cylon18/Backups/T/D/pak00*.pk4 /usr/local/games/doom3/base
deleted the files from D folder once they were copied
Copied the RoE files into D folder and ran:
sudo cp /media/cylon18/Backups/T/D/pak00*.pk4 /usr/local/games/doom3/d3xp

To start via Terminal:
./doom3
(if you get the black screen with the cursor, pressing alt+Enter will window the game and allow adjustment of the resolution. Otherwise, after restarting the game 4x by whichever means* will usually end the problem. *ie; hard powering off your computer, etc.)

Resurrection of Evil Expansion Pack:
Copy the following file from the RoE installation disk's base folder into /usr/local/games/doom3-sdk/d3xp:
d3xp/pak000.pk4

To start via Terminal:
./doom3 +set fs_game d3xp

Dedicated server:
To start via Terminal:
doom3-dedicated

Game wouldn't accept my old keys so I went with this bypass to get into the action:
When it prompts for the keys press:
ctrl+alt+~
Type into the console:
map game/site3
After a brief loading period you'll start in Site 3 with all weapons 8)

Retro News & Chat / Install Final DOOM in Linux
August 18, 2016, 19:21:38 PM
Did some searching to put together a couple ways of playing Final Doom. The first method is best to get going quick but there's no music (it can be added via some means out there but I have no interest, personally). The other method is through Wine and although there's music, the graphics are really bad.

REF
Download Final DOOM & unzip it. A folder will be created named Final Doom.

Install Zandronum:
Via Terminal one at a time:
sudo apt-add-repository 'deb http://debian.drdteam.org/ stable multiverse'

wget -O - http://debian.drdteam.org/drdteam.gpg | sudo apt-key add -

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install zandronum -y

(and if zandronum doesn't automatically install Doomseeker):
sudo apt-get install doomseeker-zandronum

To run via Terminal:
doomseeker

For a single player game:
File-Create Game
Click the browse button next to IWAD
Navigate to the Final Doom folder you unzipped earlier (or your DOOM wads if you already have many) to select/install
Press Play offline button to start game

To join a server:
Click the "Get Servers" icon at the upper left
Good luck from here! ;)

Here's the Wine method with the graphics that bleed or something when you move. Haven't researched how to fix it:

REF
Download Final DOOM & unzip it. A folder will be created named Final Doom.
Move the Final Doom folder to your home directory and rename it to FD (for simplicity)

Via Terminal:
cd FD
wine zdoom.exe

(choose which game to play; Plutonia Experiment or Evilution)
This will start the game with default controls. To edit these controls look in the DF folder to find a newly created file named YourUserName.ini (YourUserName being exactly that in its place)
Open the file in a text editor and search for: uparrow=+forward (this will be line 418 in the document)
Change the following 4 lines from:
uparrow=+forward
leftarrow=+left
rightarrow=+right
downarrow=+back

to
w=+forward
a=+left
d=+right
s=+back

If you don't want to play in full screen mode search for fullscreen=true (line 153) and change to fullscreen=false
Quicksave the .ini file

Cheat Codes are the same from DOOM II:
Enter in the following cheat codes during gameplay for the desired effect.
Cheat:    Effect:
iddqd -- God Mode
idkfa -- All Weapons/Ammo/Keys
idclip -- No Clipping Mode
idfa -- All Weapons/Ammo
IDBEHOLDS -- Beserk Pack
idclev31 -- Bonus Level
IDMUSxx -- Choose Game BGM (xx being a number)
IDBEHOLDA -- Computer Area Map
FHHALL -- Destroys all enemies except Lost Souls
IDDT -- Entire Map
IDBEHOLDI -- Invisibility
FHSHH -- Invisible to Enemies Until You Attack
IDBEHOLDV -- Invulnerability
IDCLEV xx -- Level Warp (Where xx is the level number, like 05)
IDBEHOLDL -- Light Amp Goggles
FHSHH -- Makes you completely invisible to all enemies until you shoot
IDBEHOLDR -- Radiation Suit
idchoppers -- Replace fists with Chainsaw
idmypos -- Show Position in Code
idclev32 -- Wolfenstein 3D Level

In map mode, hit IDDT *TWICE* to see all objects, you, monsters, items, and all, in the form of little triangles.
Cheat:    Effect:
iddt, iddt -- View all objects

Retro News & Chat / Install DOOM II in Linux
August 18, 2016, 03:25:41 AM
Compiled some info on how to run this incredible game in Linux. Following are the easiest methods I could come up with 8)

There are two methods listed here, DOSBox (easiest) and Wine (not much harder)

To run via DOSBox:
Install DOSBox via Terminal:
sudo apt-get install dosbox
or
Click Menu (button at extreme lower left corner of screen)-System Tools-Lubuntu Software Center
Type dosbox in the search field
Double click DOSBox Emulator to add it to the Apps Basket
Click Install Packages
Download Doom 2 & unzip the archive. It should unzip to a folder named doom2 by default.
Move the doom2 folder to your home directory.
To configure the controls using W,A,S,D for directional keys, click the spoiler for details. Otherwise, skip this step to run the game as is :)
REF To 'fix' the controls for a modern feel, open the doom2 folder and double click Default.cfg to open it in a text editor. Replace the #s next to:
key_right      77
key_left      75
key_up      72
key_down      80
to make them say:
key_right      32
key_left      30
key_up      17
key_down      31
This will give a regular feel instead of trying to use the directional arrows (even though the mouse works great as is). Pressing and holding ctrl or the left mouse button to strafe. For any other changes or customizations, the charts on this page can help.
Via Terminal:
cd doom2
dosbox Doom2.exe

or
dosbox Doom2.exe -fullscreen

Now for the good stuff 8)
Cheat Codes:
Enter in the following cheat codes during gameplay for the desired effect.
Cheat:    Effect:
iddqd -- God Mode
idkfa -- All Weapons/Ammo/Keys
idclip -- No Clipping Mode
idfa -- All Weapons/Ammo

FHSHH -- Makes you completely invisible to all enemies until you shoot
IDBEHOLDR -- Radiation Suit
idchoppers -- Replace fists with Chainsaw
idmypos -- Show Position in Code
idclev32 -- Wolfenstein 3D Level

In map mode, hit IDDT *TWICE* to see all objects, you, monsters, items, and all, in the form of little triangles.
Cheat:    Effect:
iddt, iddt -- View all objects

To end a game:
Press Esc, up or down arrow to Quit Game, press Enter, press Y
To exit DOSBox:
Type exit and press Enter

To install/run via Wine:
Install Wine (if you haven't already):
(can take a while)
Install via Terminal: (recommended bc of the updated repository; ref)
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine
(To accept the EULA Agreement about half way through the install (if prompted), hit Tab to highlight OK in red & hit Enter. Do the same for the next prompt but left arrow over to Yes)

Via Terminal:
cd doom2
wine setup.exe

Can leave all the settings as default and save/run the game
To open the game from a new Terminal type:
cd doom2
wine doom2.exe

Went through the motions on this after learning it could be pulled off in Linux. Worked out all the problems, as far as I can tell with no JagCD present to test it out on. Will give it a try tonight and verify everything works but wanted to post it in case my HD tanks or something ???

Linux used: Lubuntu 16.04 32 bit

Creating/burning .cdi w/ JiFFI in Linux:
Install Wine:
(can take a while)
Install via Terminal: (recommended bc of the updated repository; ref)
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine

(To accept the EULA Agreement about half way through the install (if prompted), hit Tab to highlight OK in red & hit Enter. Do the same for the next prompt but left arrow over to Yes)
Download the JiFFI archive from Reboot's site.
Place the zip file in a new folder named J (for simplicity purposes)
Extract the files inside the folder and delete the zip archive
*Download, unzip and place any game(s) to convert in the J folder (like Fallen Angels)
Place the folder J inside your home directory
Open Terminal and paste: wine J/JiFFI.exe

When JiFFI loads and opens, click the Source file button at the top
Navigate to the J folder and double click the game file (jag.cof, in this case)
Put a check in the box for Generate output files in the source directory (or click the Output path button and save wherever you want)
Under Output format(s): check any desired, but in the case of creating a CD check ULS boot .cdi
Click the Create file(s) button
A Success! window should appear next to the main JiFFI dialog box. Click OK to close it
Another box should appear from Wine saying that all operations have completed. Click OK to close it
Close JiFFI
Inside the J folder should now be a new file named: jag_jiffi.cdi

Download the latest version of ImgBurn
Move the setup .exe file to your home directory (at the time of this writing, SetupImgBurn_2.5.8.0.exe)
In Terminal paste: wine SetupImgBurn_2.5.8.0.exe
Follow the setup prompts as usual, leaving C:\Program Files\ImgBurn as the default install location (Wine will create the necessary folders, etc.)

To mount/use .cdi files with ImgBurn, you'll also need pfctoc.dll. Download, unzip and copy the contents of the archive to /home/YourUserName/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/ImgBurn (changing YourUserName in the path) Will also need to press ctrl-h in your home directory to show hidden files.

REF In Terminal paste: winecfg (this will open the Wine configuration)
Change 'Windows Version:' to read 'Windows 2000' & click Apply-OK to exit winecfg
ImgBurn will have created a shortcut icon on your desktop. Double click to open it
If no drive found:
, follow steps 4-6 from the reference link at the beginning of this section. I'll paste them here in case the site/info ever disappears:
4. Launch ImgBurn, note no drives are detected
5. Go into ImgBurn's options, 'I/O' tab (Click Tools-Settings-I/O tab)
6. Change Interface to 'ASPI - WNASPI32.DLL'
Place a CDR in your drive (Memorex, along with a slew of off brands have worked for me in different situations over the years so test/use whatever or go for the very best. No guarantee either way, in my experience)
Click the Write image file to disc button at the upper left
Click the Browse for a file icon at top center and navigate to home/J and double click jag_jiffi.cdi
Triple check the destination is your burning device
Set the Write Speed to 2x. (modern drives won't write this slow and may show an error in the text pane once you start burning but ImgBurn will set itself to the slowest available speed of your device by default, so no worries)
Click the Write icon at center left to burn the disk

Play the CDR in the JagCD 8)

Hi, wondering how to compile the freely available Jaguar DOOM source code from here.
The readme.txt here says that the wad starts at "$840000 to the end of the cartridge ROM." I get that part but with Carl's edit to jagonly.c (which is called jagonly_n06.c in the archive, and I'm assuming needs to be renamed?) to fix the networking issue, I'm asking if the source needs to be recompiled with this new jagonly.c in place of the old one or if the doom_n06.ABS that's also in the archive is the product of an already recompiled source and only needs to be copied/pasted before the $840000 location where the wad starts and saved as the final ROM to load in a Skunkboard?
Guess I could break out the hex editor and give it a whirl but I'd rather learn how to compile the source 8)

So, on another branch of knowledge (or lack of), here's what I've done so far in an attempt to get the ball rolling:

Reboot into Windows 7
Download source from AA (link above)
Open Readme.txt from AA for hex editing location info (link above) or as verified in OMF's post here
Download/install Jagdev102.exe from Belboz's site
Edit Autoexec.bat to match info in Jagdev 102 readme.txt as follows:
set PATH=%PATH%;C:\JAGUAR\BIN
set RDBRC=C:\JAGUAR\BIN\RDB.RC
set DBPATH=C:\JAGUAR\BIN
set ALNPATH=C:\JAGUAR\BIN
set MACPATH=C:\JAGUAR\INCLUDE
set GCC_EXEC_PREFIX=C:/JAGUAR/BIN
set TEMP=C:

Replace jagonly.c with Carl's from AA post
Copy cmd.exe to C:\JagDoomSource folder
Use info from the Breakout 2000 compiling thread about changing paths in the Makefile to match the environment, changing line 74 from:
C2OBJ = gcc -B/prog/jaguar/bin/ -b m68k -V2.6 -Wall -DJAGUAR -O2 -c -o $@ $?
to
C2OBJ = gcc -C:/JAGUAR/BIN/ -b m68k -V2.6 -Wall -DJAGUAR -O2 -c -o $@ $?
Run cmd.exe & type in make which creates a ton of errors:

Atari Chat / Atari Jaguar: BJL resources 2016
August 16, 2016, 17:25:42 PM
Searching around the internet, it appears that BJL modding for the Jaguar is becoming (or has become) a thing of the past. For someone like me who wants the mods just because I can, this isn't good. I've compiled a list of resources that are still available for doing the mod, making the cable or buying an adapter for the cable that does the work for you. (as all of the old links were dead)
These could disappear or change at any time along with availability of parts.
Most resources are listed here except how to burn the eprom with the data needed for the BJL chip. There's no independent resource for the eproms themselves either, (other than the one that comes from More Than Games' mod kit) but I may update if/when I can find anything substantial.
Basically, this is a thread with everything I've been able to find-to have in one place. 8)

More Than Games site has the BJL adapter.
DB25 cables are pretty inexpensive too, so I'm assuming there's no need to butcher the cable now.
The BJL software that included the necessary driver code to open the parallel port. A post about using a 5' cable being better.
Matthias Domin's BJL info & how to do the Mod.
Linkovitch's guide to the BJL mod.
Belboz's site with a BJL CD image.

More Than Games page with other adapter/machine info.

Atari Chat / Atari Jaguar: DOOM (assisted gaming)
August 14, 2016, 05:09:40 AM
Was able to play this for several hours today without falling ill, which is an enormous change since the game's release 20+ years ago and now that it's reclaimed the position as my favorite for the system, I've used info and resources from this site to build all-in-one map gifs for the Jaguar version. This game can get hairy quick so if you're looking for some help navigating the maps, hopefully this can help.
And looking back, restarting my battle through this masterpiece on the difficulty setting of Nightmare! probably wasn't the best choice ;D

First, here are the classic cheats for this game. Nothing like a little invincibility to make life in hell a bit easier :P

Enter one of the following codes during game play to activate the
corresponding cheat function. Note: Codes may not be enabled during
Co-op or Deathmatch modes.

Invincibility
Press Pause, * + Pause. Alternatively, press Pause, 9, 4, 7, 4, 9,
2, 1, 0.

All keys, weapons, full ammunition
Press Pause, # + Pause.

Fire weapons while in automap screen
Hold C + B. If the controls have been reconfigured, hold the buttons
assigned to "Use" and "Fire".

Deathmatch or Co-Op more music:
Begin a multiplayer game in Level 23. Complete the level, then reset
one of the Jaguars during the ending text. Start a new Deathmatch or
Co-Op game on the Jaguar that was reset to play music during the next
game in the place of sound effects.

Level Select:
Press one of the following codes during game play to begin at the
corresponding level.

Level   Code
1       1 + Pause
2       2 + Pause
3       3 + Pause
4       4 + Pause

Atari Chat / ST/Jaguar port releases for sale at AA
August 05, 2016, 19:19:27 PM
Anyone plunking down the dinero for these games? I'd be all over them but the timing is unbelievably bad for me. Looks like 16 are up right now with more on the way once 'completed.' The ST ports thread says more are complete but are apparently going to be revisited for some possible tweaks.
Al says they're made with all new parts-including the pcb boards from my understanding. Seems to be a good deal at $45 USD each and can upgrade to clear cart shell for an additional $10 while supplies last or until more come in.
That works out to $720 for all 16 with regular cart shells or $880 with clear shells.
That's a lot of jack but worth it and I intend to buy in fully to support what's been done here and hopefully get a little return to those deserving for the effort. Playing these on a Jaguar minus the Skunkboard will be fun. (don't get me wrong, I love my Skunkboards, but the "real" thing is a bonus) Just hope Treasure Island Dizzy makes the cut. Can't get that one to work in VJ, Skunkboard or as a CD.

Atari Chat / Atari Jaguar: DOOM with fixed networking
August 02, 2016, 02:57:52 AM
Been watching a thread at AA where Carl from Songbird and a few others have been working to fix the network bug. Turns out it's NOT the infamous UART bug in the hardware but entirely in Doom itself. Now, it's been worked out and is supposed to be solid.. After I asked if someone would post a working ROM, OMF was nice enough to edit the binary and upload the ROM. Although I wanted to test it out vigorously, haven't flashed it to a single Skunkboard yet.
Anyone try this?

Carl said he easily had it connected for 30-60 minutes without a connectivity loss. I'm looking forward to trying this and wanted to get the word out to all possible for feedback (and to finally be able to play it how it was actually meant!).
#34
I didn't know about this until a few minutes ago. Although I've never created/saved and custom levels for this game I'm posting here for a resource.

Web page says it all

Anyone do this or have levels to share? If I get around to making any I'll post back here 8)

Starts this weekend in Austin, TX. CGE
Heard about it on another forum and this is the 9th annual event. Supposed to the biggest so far. It's only 70 miles from my house and I thought about grabbing some tickets. Xevious on Jaguar is supposed to be available to play, which is the most interesting to me but I'm on call so won't make it :(
Anyone else attending? What I wouldn't give to be able to go! 8) 8) 8)

Retro News & Chat / ROM Hacking NES with FCEUX
June 25, 2016, 23:32:58 PM
A quick and easy how-to for rom hacks with FCEUX (and assuming it's already installed/configured)

This goes hand in hand with the NES 'Game Code Modifications' :p thread.

Open FCEUX and load a rom. For this example, I'm using Die Hard (U)
Discover Game Genie Codes on your own or go to this page to pick from them.
Compile a list of what you want, need or have (sometimes limited) access to. Here are my picks:

Infinite shots on all guns:
ATVEIZSZ

Infinite Time:
SXKYZPVG
SXKNYPVG

Invincibility:
AAXAPASZ

Radio Worth All Items:
NYNXULAO

In FCEUX, click Debug-Game Genie Encoder/Decoder
Paste in one of the codes from the list into the field on the left of the dialog box under Game Genie Code
To hack the rom itself, double click the address that auto appears under Possible Affected Rom File Addresses at the bottom of the dialog box.
The value will open with the first byte highlighted in FCEUX's built in Hex Editor
This value will be the same as the Compare value in the Game Genie Encoder/Decoder dialog box.
Change it to the value in the Value field of the Game Genie Encoder/Decoder dialog box by simply typing the new characters (when the Hex Editor window is in view)
To save and consequently, modify the rom with the new hack, there are 3 useful ways:
    1. In the built in Hex Editor window, after making changes click File-Save Rom. The changes will be made to the original rom immediately.
    2. (Recommended) In the built in Hex Editor window, after making changes click File-Save Rom As... This will open another window allowing you to rename the rom something else (for testing purposes or to keep both or to keep the original intact or whatever)
    3. Highlight and copy the string of bytes around the area to be modified and open the rom with another hex editing program. Then, paste the searchable into the Find box to ensure it's searchable/usable and post online for everyone else who wants to do the same thing... like this 8)

So, for Infinite shots on all guns, use Game Genie code ATVEIZSZ
Open in a Hex Editor

Infinite Time 1 of 2: SXKYZPVG

Infinite Time 2 of 2: SXKNYPVG

Invincibility: AAXAPASZ

Radio Worth All Items: NYNXULAO
Search: 790920857960AD79070910
Change: 790920857960AD790709FF

Load up the new rom in most any emulator and it works like a charm. Personally, this is the only reason I use Windows anymore. Seems there's not adequate hacking tools to match this ease of use in Linux yet so I hack em in Win 7 and play em in Lubuntu 8)

Homebrew Chat / Starcat releases for Atari Jaguar
June 08, 2016, 14:54:34 PM
Was going through some old files/sites and ran across Starcat's Atari Jaguar downloads page. Haven't seen him online in some years but I'd bought a copy of Jagmind: Bombsquad when it was released and now it's freely available. If you have a JagCD it's great for a spin. The action can get frantic fast. I'd posted my high score on JSII back in 2005 but can't remember what it was.

Anyway, more good stuff for the Jaguar! 8) 8)

Decided to upgrade to the newest LTS version from 15.10 now that K9copy was updated and released. It installs a bit differently and I can't get it to function properly but it works nonetheless. Most of the installs are the same as the previous version but there are some major differences, the most awkward being the lack of CUPS built in. There may be some form of it but I wasn't able to set up my printer as easy. Literally had to install CUPS first, then proceed as normal. Also, no XTerm ???  Still, this is an awesome OS and following the below, was able to have it up and running from scratch in a couple of hours. Hoping updates over the next few months will make it smoother. 8)

Try at your own risk but this is what worked for me 8)
Recommend running from a live CD first to test compatibility with your computer, even though actually installing it after a successful run doesn't guarantee it will work. Discovered this using that method with a Dell Inspiron 1100. It worked great using the Live CD but after installing, the graphics driver was incompatible and Lubuntu had to be removed as it was unusable. Below is merely a ton of info I discovered after hours of research and compiled here to possibly assist anyone else looking for the same-but moreso, to refer to myself as a quick resource when wiping out and reinstalling this wonderful operating system 8)

Download, burn & install Lubuntu: (this info is derived from 32bit only) Lubuntu releases

WiFi fix REF
Via Terminal:

Reboot and connect to wifi

Also try:

Xfce Power Manager:
My current settings almost match the ones posted here. Tested to see if they're better than the default settings that cause errors with apps/tray icons after resuming.

Tweaked slightly, I've found the following to be the best for myself:

Decrease the swap use (very important!): REF
Quote
1.4. This is especially noticeable on computers with relatively low RAM memory (1 GB or less): they tend to be far too slow in Lubuntu, and Lubuntu accesses the hard disk too much. Luckily, this can be helped.

On the hard disk there's a separate partition for virtual memory, called the swap. When Lubuntu uses the swap too much, the computer slows down a lot.

Lubuntu's inclination to use the swap, is determined by a setting. The lower the setting number, the longer it takes before Lubuntu starts using the swap. On a scale of 0-100, the default setting is 60. Which is much too high for normal desktop use, and only fit for servers.

A detailed explanation can be found here (link dead? Then download this pdf file with the same content).

Now the how-to:

a. First make sure that you have installed the applications gksu and leafpad:

Menu button - System Tools - LXTerminal

Type (use copy/paste):
sudo apt-get install gksu leafpad

Press Enter and submit your password. Please note that the password will remain invisible, not even asterisks will show, which is normal.

b. Now check your current swappiness setting. Type in the terminal (use copy/paste):
cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness

Press Enter.

The result will probably be 60.

c. To change the swappiness into a more sensible setting, type in the terminal (use copy/paste):
gksudo leafpad /etc/sysctl.conf

Press Enter.

Scroll to the bottom of the text file and add your swappiness parameter to override the default. Copy/paste the following blue lines:
# Decrease swap usage to a more reasonable level
vm.swappiness=10

(set at 20 or higher if using Dropbox or tray icon will not appear)
Set at 22 if using Dropbox and Skype or Skype icon will appear messed up)
Quote
d. Close the text file and reboot your computer.

e. After the reboot, check the new swappiness setting:

Menu button - System Tools - LXTerminal

Type (use copy/paste):
cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness

Press Enter.

Now it should be 10.

Note: if your hard disk is an SSD, your machine will benefit from an even bigger decrease in swappiness. That's because too many write actions, like frequent swapping, reduce the lifespan of an SSD. For an SSD I advise a swappiness of 1. Also check these tips for optimizing an SSD for your Linux.
With wireless disabled and no wired internet connection go back to Terminal and type:
[The following will not work-proceed to the next step]
/home/azilink/start_modem or /home/yourname/azilink/start_modem
(whichever way your structure is set up)

[Next step] If the above fails:
Open a new Terminal and paste in:
/home/YourUserName/DroidTetherSV/droidtethersv

To create a new shortcut as a workaround for the above, create a file in your Home Directory and name it Tether.sh (or similar, just make sure it has the file extension .sh). Open the file with gedit and paste in the following:
/usr/bin/uxterm /home/YourUserName/DroidTetherSV/droidtethersv
(Be sure to change YourUserName)
Quicksave and close it.
Right click on it and select Properties at the bottom of the list.
Click the Permissions tab and next to Execute, change it to Only Owner or Anyone.
Click Close.

While in your Home folder, press ctrl+h to show hidden files
Open .config/mimeapps.list and under [Added Associations] edit the text/plain= entry with:

Mount partition(s) at startup:

sudo blkid
Note the UUID of the partition you want to mount and leave this Terminal open for later
In a new Terminal, open fstab:
sudo gedit /etc/fstab
Paste in the UUID (w/out the quotation marks) on a new line at the bottom of fstab
example: UUID=01D198544C1A4580
Leave fstab open for later

Now, open any folder. In the left pane where it says "Places", click that word and change the view to "Directory Tree."
Scroll down to a folder named / (should be at the bottom of the list) and open it by double clicking on it. Now scroll down to media and double click it to drop down its contents
Double click your username to drop its contents
The partition/drive from the UUID above should be visible (as well as all partitions/drives that are named, ie; 'Local Disk C' from a Windows installation won't actually have a name so won't appear in this folder. It will appear in the Terminal window after using sudo blkid but will be nameless there too.) Double click the desired partition to view its contents.
Right click on any file or folder inside the partition/drive and select Properties
Highlight and copy the path next to location

Back in fstab, add a space after the UUID info pasted into it earlier & paste the path you just copied.
Example: UUID=01D198544C1A4580 /media/cylon17/Backups
You can now click Directory Tree in the open folder to switch it back to Places if desired

Back in the Terminal window with the UUID info, look for the TYPE of the partition/drive from earlier. Type the info on the line in fstab after a space from the mount point.
Example: UUID=01D198544C1A4580 /media/cylon17/Backups ntfs

To finish the line and make the partition/drive automount, add a space and defaults 0 1
Example: UUID=01D198544C1A4580 /media/cylon17/Backups ntfs defaults 0 1

Do the same for any other partitions or drives and reboot to test.
Fix status icon and autostart: REF (This worked like a charm for me)
Quote
However, the only thing I have found to work for Lubuntu is this:

    dropbox stop (or ctrl+alt+del to open task mgr-then right click and kill dropbox process)
    dbus-launch ~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd
    That will start dropbox with the system tray ("notification area") icon, instead of the nonfunctional "indicator area" icon. So, go into Dropbox settings via the icon that should now be working, and TURN OFF the check box to start dropbox automatically. Also, just to be sure, issue the following in terminal:
    dropbox autostart n
    gksudo pcmanfm
    in the elevated-permissions file manager window, go to folder /bin and create a file called "dropbox-workaround-autostart". In it put:

    #!/bin/bash

    dbus-launch ~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd

    Right-click the file, and in permissions tab, make executable for Anyone.
    Go to Preferences>Default applications for LXSession>Autostart, and under the "manual" section input box, type the name of the file (dropbox-workaround-autostart) and hit add.

That's got it consistently working for me know. Hope that helps someone.

The following will launch Dropbox at startup but in Lubuntu the status icon is messed up so not recommended. Left it here for reference:
1.    Press the Lubuntu icon on the bottom left;
2.    Select "Preferences" > "Default applications for LXSession";
3.    In the opened window, select the option "Autostart";  (type /home/username/.dropbox-dist/dropbox-lnx.x86-3.18.1/dropbox & click Add)
4.    Now you can enable or disable the autostarted applications, check/uncheck one in the list or set manually on the field and pressing the "Add" button.

To make desktop shortcuts:
(There are several ways, the following probably being the easiest but others are much more entertaining)

sudo pcmanfm /usr/share/applications
Right-click on the application you want to use and select copy
Click on your desktop and select paste

Example of creating a desktop trash bin to open with regular permissions:
Desktop shortcuts

Made a desktop shortcut using the trash can info in the link. Copied this:
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Trash
Comment=Open Trash folder in PCManFM
Icon=/home/username/.extra-icons/trashcan-128x128(c).png
Exec=/usr/bin/pcmanfm trash:///
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Pasted it into a new text doc named Trash.desktop then created the folder ".extra-icons" in my Home directory by holding ctrl+H to make all folders visible. Went online and downloaded a pic of a trash can and resized it to 128x128 via gthumb, renamed it to "trashcan-128x128(c).png" & moved it into the .extra-icons directory.
Quick saved the text doc and after rebooting it appeared on the desktop with the name Trash. Double clicking it opens the trash folder exactly as the original desktop icon does.

To create a shortcut to a mounted drive (ie; Windows installation folder) with elevated permissions: REF
I created a text doc on the desktop and pasted in the info from the link:
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=Application
Name=Nautilus
Name[sv_SE]=Nautilus
Exec=/usr/bin/nautilus --no-desktop
Comment[sv_SE]=kraftfull filhanterare
Icon=/usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/nautilus.svg
Then simply added to the Exec line making it:
Exec=/usr/bin/nautilus --no-desktop /media/MyUserName/Win7/Users/MyOtherUserName/Desktop
and added a custom icon, linking to it as follows:
Icon=/home/MyUserName/.extra-icons/Win7.ico
This opened the Desktop on the Windows install (with Admin privileges) 8)

To create the same shortcut using the regular file opener (pcmanfm) where only regular permissions are needed, use the following and note the only changes to the above are "Nautilus" (3x) being replaced by "pcmanfm" :
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=Application
Name=Windows 7 Desktop-pcmanfm
Name[sv_SE]=pcmanfm
Exec=/usr/bin/pcmanfm --no-desktop /media/cylon17/Win7/Users/Cylon15/Desktop
Comment[sv_SE]=Saturn ROCKS!
Icon=/home/cylon17/.extra-icons/Win7.ico

Decided to try the latest version of Puppy (Slacko_6.3.0, to date) and although a lot of the setup looks similar to Tahr_6.0.5, this is a completely different beast. There are major graphical differences that drastically improve this OS..but also cause a driver problem for the Dell Inspiron 1100. It's covered below under Repair graphics: 8)

I'm sure the methods for installation are the same or similar on any computer but I'm using an ancient Dell Inspiron 1100 and this OS is one of the only ones I've found that will work with it.
Resources: [ISO resource] [Index of Puppy] [Index of coolpup]
Slacko specific Index

From this page, download and burn slacko-6.3.0.iso
(For reference, here is the 64bit ISO)
or have a look at Puppy Linux Selection Guide for other versions.
Insert the live CD and boot from it.
There are two ways of installing Puppy. Frugal (minimal install) and Full:

Frugal install:
Once it loads, test the touch pad to see if tapping it executes a 'left click'. Can probably skip setting it up here as you'll need to do it again after installing but if not, open Menu-Setup-Mouse/keyboard Wizard.
Click Touchpad-Tapping (tab)-One Finger-left button-Save-Quit.
The touch pad should now work as expected.
Next, click the install icon on the desktop in the middle of the top row.
Follow the prompts to select/create a location (I made and used a 29GB partiton -using GParted-much overkill on the size, on my part, btw) and install.
Remove the live CD when it automatically ejects after a few minutes of installation time.
Set up the grub as needed. (defaults worked for me so only clicked OK several times to complete the process)
Reboot the computer by clicking Menu-Exit-Reboot or right click anywhere on the desktop and click Exit-Reboot.
Click No when asked to save session of first shutdown. It's useless if you installed and you'll have to do it again later anyway.
The grub will default to Puppy Linux (if installed with another OS)

Reboot:
Click anywhere on the desktop and select Exit-Reboot-otherwise, click Menu-Exit-Reboot
If this is the first time you're shutting down, a slew of prompts will appear. Click each one accordingly as it will save time booting and shutting down in the future. For reference, here's what I selected:
Save
administrator
sda5 RECOMMENDED*
NORMAL (no encryp)
ext2 maximum storage space-OK
512MB
pupsave name: whatever
YES,SAVE

wait..

Creating the save file can take a few minutes but in the long run it's worth it-one time thing
During boot, a message will appear after "Updating" stating next boot will be faster!. This part takes at least a minute to complete...

Full install:
This will install Puppy to an entire partition so ensure it doesn't contain any important files or another OS.

Insert the live CD and boot from it.
Follow the prompts to select/create a location-using GParted as needed.
Choose Full at the 'Puppy Universal Installer' window
Click OK at the 'Final Sanity Check' (lol)

After the files have copied (can take 5-7 minutes), remove the live CD.
Set up the grub as needed. (defaults worked for me so only clicked OK several times to complete the process)
Reboot the computer by clicking Menu-Exit-Reboot or right click anywhere on the desktop and click Exit-Reboot.
Click No when asked to save session of first shutdown.
The grub will default to Puppy Linux (if installed with another OS)
Repair graphics: REF
If you're graphics are distorted upon reaching the desktop like mine are on this outdated Dell Inspiron 1100, press F12 to initiate the shutdown screen. Even if you can't see the entries (or see them very well), no worries. Here's the key sequence to get to the command line for the next step:
Press the down arrow 14 times (and it'll be highlighting the Shutdown icon)
Press [Enter] once. Next, press right once and down once to highlight 'Exit to Prompt'.
Press [Enter] and you'll end up at the command line.
Type in xorgwizard and hit [Enter]
When it loads, choose from the available drivers to attempt one that will work.
(The Intel driver for my laptop was used by default but having problems running in Slacko_6.3.0 vs correctly in Tahr_6.0.5. Initially I'd tried the vesa driver with my common resolution of 1024x768 which, even though the subsequent test said worked, loaded a blank screen at the desktop. In the end, the modesetting driver was the one that worked.)

Here's how I got back up and running after the desktop loaded blank (and w/out having to reinstall):
Ran Slacko_6.3.0 from the live CD.
Once loaded, opened a Terminal and ran restartwm to refresh the screen making it all visible.
Navigated to my Slacko installation on the hard drive and opened /etc/X11/xorg.conf (text editor)
Remembering that the vesa driver was last loaded, did a search on 'vesa'
Located toward the bottom part of the file, I deleted it and entered 'modesetting'
Quicksaved, exited, rebooted, removed the live CD and when Puppy loaded, the screen was perfect.

In hindsight, I recommend running the live CD to see if there are any problems, then use the info above to see if there's a fix before going through all the trouble I had to.
Connect to the internet:
The best method I've found for internet is to click the setup icon at the top of the desktop
Click Internet-Wired or wireless LAN-Network Wizard
(Click eth0 for a hard wired connection & follow the prompts-very easy)
Click wlan0 for wireless:
Click the Wireless button
Click Scan (in a few seconds all available networks will appear)
Tick the right/strongest/best connection if it wasn't by default-OK
Click its encryption level which will automatically fill the profile fields
Input Shared Key (password)
Click Save-Use This Profile
When the Profile Manager finishes connecting, click Test wlan0
If the 'Report on test' at the top was successful, click Auto DHCP
Browse the net to ensure it's working
If so, click Yes at the prompt to save this configuration
Click Done (this connection should auto load from now on when the ssid is in range)
If the tool worked and you want to use it from now on, click Set as default to exit setup.
Another window will appear confirming the default network cfg-click OK

OLD (for reference):
Click the Connect icon on the window that pops up.
Click "Wired or wireless LAN" icon.
If using a lan cable, enable it and proceed.
If using a wireless adapter (like the old Linksys WPC54G v2.0 Network Adapter I still have), click "Simple Network Setup"
Click the wireless button (wlan0).
Wait for the next dialog box to appear.
In my case, the wireless network available already has the radio button ticked.
Choose encryption method (from the router) if any. WPA covers WPA2 as well, whichever is being used.
Enter the key (or passphrase)
Click Connect
When the next dialog box appears asking if it works, open the Pale Moon Browser by clicking the green 'browse' icon on the desktop. Navigate around to make sure you can access the internet as it will say you're connected even if it's only to the router.
If it works properly, click 'Set as default' button-OK.
After booting up, just click the "Connect" icon on the desktop to re-connect.
Initial update after install: (do before the Firefox fix)
This step can be very time costly and with the lack of available packages to choose from, may be a waste altogether. But, here it is anyway:

-Click Menu-Setup-Puppy Package Manager
Click the tool icon at the upper left
Put a check in whichever versions (I checked them all just to cover it 8) )
Click the 'Update database' tab
Click Update now
Press [Enter] at each prompt to complete
Click the Options tab
Tick: Skip package size check when more than 4GB of storage is available
Tick: Do not delete downloaded packages after installation (saved to /tmp)
Click OK

-Click Menu (at lowest left of the screen)-Setup-Updates Manager -latest from Slackware
Install any updates (can take a while since the app closes after each upgrade)
Setup a login password: REF
By default, Puppy loads to the desktop as root with no interaction from a human. To change this:
Quote
. To configure screen locking, right-click the lock icon on the desktop; configure, if you want
2. click Lock the screen now
3. enter Key (password)
4. REMEMBER PASSWORD
5. enter Key again
screen is locked
6. to unlock, hit Enter and, when asked (it may take a minute or so), enter password
.....To set locking on boot-up......
1. click file icon on desktop
2. click Startup
3. right-click a blank space on the (~/Startup) window
4. choose New > Script
5. name new script xlock and click Create
6. right-click xlock icon, and choose Open As Text
the new window (named xlock) which opens will already have the first line - #!/bin/sh
7. on the second line, type xlock& and hit enter
8. save and close file
9. close ~/Startup window
.............
now, whenever you start this puppy ('booting' a puppy just sounds mean!), the screen will lock after a few seconds
to unlock it, hit Enter, wait for the message, type in the password, and hit Enter

To get rid of the crazy looking screensaver that appears by default using the above script, type this into it instead during steps 6 & 7 above:
#!/bin/sh
xlock -mode blank
(When it loads it'll be completely blank and can be easily overlooked as the system still trying to boot or something-press a key to get the login screen visible)

Here are some other choices: Xlock FAQ
#!/bin/sh
xlock -mode matrix
NOTE: Rebooting after setting the login password, the OS crashed at the point when it should have been loading the desktop. I had to hard power off and re-attempt a boot. Errors appeared while booting and I had to hard power off again. A 3rd boot attempt was successful with the addition of a warning (that I dismissed) about the OS not being properly shutdown. Everything loaded fine so not sure if this is because of the login password or just a coincidence but will test it out during future re-installs to see if it's consistent.
Fix Open containing folder from Firefox: REF (do after initial updates or redo again after)
This is an awkward issue and since Firefox is the default browser in this OS, it has to be functioning. (How could this even be a thing?) There are 2 proposed solutions on the page. The latter seems easier to make happen but didn't work for me so below is the original solution that worked flawlessly:

To be able to open the folder containing downloads from the link on the browser:
Navigate to /usr/local/bin
Right click on a blank area and create a new script
Name it rox-open-url
Right click on it and choose 'Open As Text'
Paste in the following:
#!/bin/bash

# Opens input argument in rox, where input argument is assumed to be a URL
# of the form file://<path-to-file>

# Mithat Konar 17 Aug 2008

# Requires sed and /usr/local/share/rox-open-url/urldecode.sed

##############################################################

# strip away file:// prefix and decode remaining characters
thePath=`echo "$1" | sed 's/^[fF][iI][lL][eE]:\/\///' | sed -f /usr/local/share/rox-open-url/urldecode.sed`

rox "$thePath"
Quicksave and exit
To make the script executable, open a Terminal and paste in the following:
chmod +x /usr/local/bin/rox-open-url

Now, navigate to /usr/local/share
Create a new directory named: rox-open-url
Open it and create a blank file named: urldecode.sed
Open it and paste in the following:

Update to latest version:
Download the latest Linux RPM package.
Extract the contents

(Easiest way I found was to copy a link from /usr/share/applications/xarchive.desktop
to
/root/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/OpenWith
and
right click the /root/Downloads/Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.2_Linux_x86_install-rpm_en-US.tar.gz pkg Choose Select All-Extract)

Once extracted (defaults to its own folder), open en-US-RPMs and click each file individually.
(I clicked 8 at a time and everything auto-installed perfectly. 41 files to install + 1 in the desktop-integration folder: openoffice4.1.2-freedesktop-menus-4.1.2-9782.noarch.rpm)
At completion I opened some files and noted the new version number in the splash and via the Help menu

Note to self: In Calc, Format-Cells-Alignment (tab)-Vertical-Middle-OK
